slow 18 mile cruise today and 3 mile walk, hubby back on the bike for the first time in several months. He kept getting reinfected with this crud going around. But it was a beautiful day!

Sushi for dinner, brought home from local health food store. Yay, I don't have to cook

The veggie garden looks great! I can't wait for ours to start sprouting up. We also planted 5 fruit trees on our property a couple days ago. We planted a Golden Delicious, Arkansas Black Apple, Kieffer Pear, 3 n 1 Cherry, and a Montmorency Cherry. Yummy :)

Italychick I'm still working up to that far on the bike. We went for a long walk this evening.

I think I'll hit 8.5 miles today. I have a sore knee so I'm a little slower than normal, but still did okay on hills.

snack before walk: 2 cukes, natural pork jerky T coconut oil, unsalted cashews, Power Crunch snack bar

Snack during walk: cranberry juice drink, trail mix

Dinner: open face ham sandwich on thin whole-grain bread, orange juice

At friends' house: Terra Chip sweets & beets, dark chocolate, orange

oh wow. The food here is inspiring me! Today- took my pack for a walk, went to yoga flow, and roasted a happy chicken with rosemary and garlic, with baby green salad and a baked potatoes. For lunch, had a grilled cheese sandwich and a smoothie with more baby greens, cultured buttermilk, cinnamon, and grapes. Oh yeah. (Guilty look) fresh beignets and cafe au lait before yoga.

I'm as surprised as anyone at how much I'm enjoying this Zumba class. I pick up the moves pretty quickly--makes me wonder how my life might have been different if middle and high school phys ed classes and locker rooms were welcoming rather than homophobic and threatening.

Middle school and high schools PE made chemo seem like a walk in a field of happy daisys by comparison. Teenagers and tweens are disgusting rabid badgers. :)

Seriously, I always hid in a corner and changed. Teenage girls are vicious.

Ksusan, you will have mastered Zumba when you can do it with the coconut bra and the grass skirt!

A noble goal, though the coconut bra may be a bit harsh on the surgical sites.

Nice work ksusan! And you are in my eyes definitely not at the bottom of the hill, more like near the top with Jen and Theresa! And lol, I can definitely picture Theresa at the top holding up her bike! You ladies rock!

As for me...working at slow and steady. Been averaging 3 to 3.5 mi daily, though yesterday did 4.5 and it felt great! Hoping to get to 4.5 today too...

I've been lurking for months in anticipation of needing rads or chemo, but my oncology team is not recommending either. Just wanted to say how much of an inspiration you all are! I'll continue reading and hope to keep up with my own exercise regimen!

Best wishes to all of you!

I feel crappy today (day 14 on 3 week chemo cycle). Plugged sinus on one side, sore throat, watery eye. Will hit the treadmill anyways. Thanks for the motivation ladies.

Put turmeric in my smoothie today. Put 1 tsp. Way too much lol. Anyone use turmeric? How much do you use

pboi, just climb your own hill, lady. No one else matters, and you are doing great!

Grandma3- lucky you! You are welcome chemo, rads, or none!

Jonsey, hope ya feel better soon. I'm fighting the same thing.

Took my pack for a walk today, in anticipation of looming fire season. It does make me happy that I can keep up with 23 year olds lol. Anticipating a check up with my surgeon tomorrow. Fun fun!

Jonsey, I take capsules, can't deal with turmeric straight.

So my bone head for the day. Woke up feeling achy so I decided to take two Advil before bike ride. Uh yeah, I took the Advil pm by accident, then rode 33 miles. Now where's my bed? It is totally nap time.

Grandma3X, welcome! You can join us even without further treatment :)

Jonsey, I take a Meriva curcumin capsule recommended by my naturopathic doctor. I also sometimes make a cup of green tea and add a little (1/8 t?) turmeric, plus ginger, black pepper, and stevia. In fact, I'm drinking a big mug of it right this minute. It's a little spicy and pleasant. Turmeric stains, so wash it out of clothes immediately and rinse your mug after you finish.

Jen...absolutely, I keep climbing up and up! But love to see you ladies rocking those bigger numbers! Inspires me to keep going and working harder...

Jonesy...so sorry you're having a crappy day. Good for you for trying for the treadmill, hope the walk/run will help you feel a bit better.

I'm going to do the opposite sort of food accounting--I will post whenever I eat anything that's not recommended or within reason. This will, I hope, result in fewer posts but with greater utilitarian shame.

I switched from real turmeric to the curcumin capsules when I noticed how badly turmeric stains everything. I was afraid I'd get bright yellow teeth if I drank turmeric tea every day. If you switch to the capsules, I believe they should also contain some form of piperine, or black pepper extract, to aid with absorption.

Jonsey, I applaud you for doing what you can even when not feeling well. As long as we all focus on what we can do instead of what we can't do, we will make progress!

Today I'm just trying to reach my step goal and work around the yard and house. I'm prepping vegetables for the week, too.

Made gumdrop cookies. My guilty pleasure and my kids' favourite. A 35 minute walk/jog in intervals made sure I burned the 300 calories I ate of crap. Not sure it was worth it.

    Breakfast- smoothie

    Lunch- homemade cabbage soup

    Dinner- Salmon and Brussel sprouts

Not sure what the "cold" was, maybe a side effect in the sinuses. Seems better today but not gone. Head clear enough today to read a little and do some work on my dissertation. I love having a good day!

Rural professional development models in education

Jonsey, does your topic mean how to provide professional development to educators in rural settings, or is it about what types of professional development will most help with the education of rural children? I live in a rural area, near a town of about 1000. We have a very small K-12 school serving mostly kids with non-English speaking parents.

I managed to achieve my step goal, but that's it for today's exercise.

Thanks for asking about my dissertation. I am looking into one local rural model for providing professional development of teachers and investigating the challenges rural school divisions face in providing effective PD for teachers, what challenges teachers face, and to what extent the model I am investigating is effective at both meeting the challenges within the rural context and meeting the PD needs of teachers (and indirectly their students). It is a single case study that spans 2 years of data from multiple viewpoints.

I am trying to "partition" my day into useful chunks that work for me. 9 am -11 or 12 is my time to work on my dissertation. After lunch, I tend to spend an hour exercising and then shower, do some housework and have a "rest" for about an hour. By then my family comes home and I spend the rest of my evening being a mom. I have never been able to really care for myself like I can now (being off work). I am trying to have some productive time when I am at my best (for me the mornings) and exercising at my lowest point energy wise (after lunch). I don't know about all of you, but it feels good to not have appointments several times a week now. I had so many appointments before chemo started, it was a full time job just to do that!

I have decided in the end to alternate days walking and doing the couch to 10K program. Yesterday I completed the first week and it feels good to push myself a bit. Maybe I will look for a 5K or 10K to run this summer just to help myself feel like I am working towards something and have accomplished something. I have time to decide yet.

Hope you have a good day.

Jonsey...your dissertation sounds very interesting. Do you have long to go before your defense?

I wanted to try the couch to 5k too, but trying to figure out how to run without pain or hurting myself. Been trying to slowly increase my walking to 4 mi a day. Want to try to get to a slow jog/run (never been a runner) but every time I attempt, low back/hip pains come the next day...so frustrating. I seem to strain my bones/muscles so easily now, was never like this before chemo. Any little pain scares me and I already have osteoporosis at 44, thanks to chemo/surgicalmenopause/AI probably. So trying ever so slowly to increase intensity.

I have to say I was not a regular exerciser before this and had a hard time staying motivated. But when this thread started last July, I joined in here and coming here has kept me accountable and moving especially on those days I felt lazy. Now exercise is a part of my day, every day, so thanks ladies for being here and helping me to keep moving!!!
