Menstrual period returns 5 yrs. after chemo induced menopause.
Hello,
I am 51 and had a mastectomy 6 years ago followed by chemo, radiation and 5 years of tamoxifen. My period came back exactly 2 months after I completed my tamoxifen....with a vengeance, I must say (very heavy bleeding). I was told by my oncologist that would not happen. I just saw an OB/GYN who wants me to have an ultra sound and possibly a uterine biopsy. If my uterus is healthy, not treatment. If there is a polyp she will want to remove it and possible cauterize my uterus. I feel that It's just my body trying to return to its natural balance.......
I am reaching out to see how rare it actually is to get your period back after breast cancer treatment. Have any of you experienced this?
Thanks so much!
Karen

I'm curious about this as well since I've been told that I'm in menopause (I'm 45), it's only been 1 year and I was already told that I can have my IUD removed.

I'm not sure how relevant this will be for you but...
I was diagnosed while I was pregnant so my periods had already stopped. I did treatment and 18 months of tamoxifen. When I came off the tamoxifen I waited 6 months with no period. I wanted to get my cycle back because I wanted to have another baby. I did some acupuncture and three months later I had a regular cycle again. Those cycles have continued now for three years. I was told that my periods may or may not come back; an equal chance of either
caution about your IUD..I was not able to conceive with fertility treatments but did conceive naturally one time (had an early miscarriage). My Dr. was pretty shocked that I was able to get pregnant. I was 38 when that happened.

I have been bleeding for over a week. I've been on Tamoxifen for a year and a half. I am 49, and the tests show I am in menopause. My gyno says the bleeding is due to the thickening in the lining of my uterus. My uterine biopsy was negative. He offered to d0 a D&C, but I don't know what to do. I don't want to make the situation worse, but the bleeding shows no sign of stopping. Anyone have any success with the D&C? Does it help or make things worse?
