BRCA gene test results...finally.
Hi Everyone,
I hope everyone is doing well. Spring will be here soon and that always helps the mood
I want to thank all of you for your constant and unwavering support and encouragement..... It is so nice to be able to talk freely and without judgement.
My doctors office just called to inform me of the results of the BRCA test. I am of Ashenazki Jewish ancestry so this was a major concern of mine especially since I have 3 daughters ages 29, 25 and 18. Well, finally some good news.... I tested negative. What a relief! Now at least I don't have to have my ovaries removed and my daughters risk is now the same as the general population.. A load has been lifted over of me and now there is one les thing for me to worry about..
My surgery is scheduled for this coming Tuesday, March 22... I have to go to the hospital on Monday to have the injection for the sentinel nodes... I was given a prescription for EMLA cream
Can someone please tell me what to expect...... I will also be having a wire localization before my surgery and really don't know what to expect for that so any insight or pointers would be appreciated...
While I was on the phone with the DR today I mentioned my oncotype score again.. I said that the pathology of my tumor did not correlate with the Oncotype score. My tumor Stage 1 Grade 1 (well differentiated ) ER + PR + HER2 - (FISH) She said that was very astute of me to pick up on that ( YAY ME!) and this is a great question to ask the MO who would be more qualified to answer and explain... When I pressed her for her opinion as to whether she thinks I might need chemo she reluctantly told me that she didn't think so and that the hormone therapy and radiation would be recommended. I am praying that she is right... I decided that unless the % change of chemo vs no chemo is great I would opt out..... Remember I was in a terrible car accident , was in a coma for 6 weeks, in the hospital for 6 months, had multi system organ failure and a leg amputated.... My body has really been through enough of a trauma so unless the the chemo would benefit me more that a few % points I will not subject myself to it.
I have an appointment set up with a MO a week after my surgery so I guess until then I will have to just wait it out..... Xanax is my new best friend.
Thanks again and any input on the injection and/or wire localization would be appreciated.
Diane

Nachout I don't know anything about the node injection but I had a wire localization surgical biopsy on Monday. It really wasn't that bad. I had an IV then was taken to mammography. They did a couple of views to locate the area then had me sit in a chair and placed my breast into the position for wire placement. The doctor came in and the area was sterilized with something then a small injection to numb the site. I barely felt anything as the wire was placed and marked then bandaged. The worse thing was being able to breathe deeply since I was hugging the mammo machine so tight. My area was deep against my chest wall. My head had to be in a different position so I couldn't see anything they were doing. I was frightened because I didn't know what to expect. I am also badly claustrophobic. But it wasn't as bad as I feared. Then I was taken to preop where I relaxed and talked to the nurses and anesthesiologist. I then was taken to surgery and I felt panicky when I got on the table although I had been through that before and knew how it was. But I have difficulty breathing on my back so I just said a quick prayer and the next thing I knew I was waking up in recovery. All in all everyone was super nice and explained things as they happened. I had very little pain even now. I have to be reminded constantly to take it easy and don't lift or tug stuff. I did have the usual blues and depression from post anesthesia on the second day. The stereotactic biopsy was worse.

Hi there,
Nice to "meet" you but sorry it is under these circumstances I guess it depends on the insurance company . My company covered it in full.. Since I am of Ashkenazi Jewish decent and it is a given that I would need the test.... You can always call and inquire but my doctors office did all the the necessary paperwork and phone calls.
Good luck and hopefully you won't need the test..... Keep us posted..
