    Lunch yesterday with a dear young friend, just fourty. She has a daughter and two adopted boys and I just admirer her so much. We share the quilting passion. Lunch was nothing spectacular but great very light croissant turkey, avocado, tomato, cucumber sandwiches. Lunch was near a quilt store as I have a baby quilt to make.

    Hi back Eric, love hand quilted quilts as most machine quilt now.

    Going to make a heavy on vegetables chicken soup today

    I don't drink much of anything, especially beer, but there are two I won't pass up -- Peroni and Negra Modelo. And the occasional Stella Artois. Ok, that's three.

    Making corned beef and cabbage Thursday. Had a sample at the grocery and it was not too strong and they suggested baking so thats what I will do..

    Enjoyed craft beers but not so much anymore. A dark would be nice Thursday

    auntie - you and I could definitely drink beer together - those three are my short list too! I had the pleasure of drinking Peroni in a beachside bar in Positano - awesome!

    Quinn - did this last year following this recipe - turned out great. It is a baked recipe also, but boiling the corned beef first to get some of the salt out.

    Quinn - I particularly liked the sautéed cabbage too, I like the crispier edges rather than boiled cabbage. I have continued with sautéed cabbage this year off and on and somewhat of a variation on this with a dish that has browned spicy turkey kielbasa, which is then removed from the pan, then cabbage, onion and garlic added with S&P, a little sugar and cooked until slightly browned at the edges, the kielbasa is added back and a bit of grainy Dijon and white wine vinegar added and stirred around for a minute. It is yummy and quick because the kielbasa is already cooked! DH often has erratic hours and a long commute so this is a good regularly used recipe that I can make quickly.

    I'm back. Had a great trip but I fell & broke my arm up by my shoulder joint on the last day. My son had to fly me home. Saw the orthopod yesterday. So far no surgery & doc hopes by immobilization that the 4 broken places will grow back together. In a sling for 8-12 weeks. More X-rays in 2 weeks to see if this plan is working. 6 months for "total" recovery. Mostly taking pain meds & sleeping. Hard to type but I knew I had to check in. Thinking of you all & will enjoy reading for awhile.

    Oh no Minus!!!!! What an unfortunate accident. I just don't know what to say. Miserable.

    For dinner, I thawed half a chicken breast and marinaded it in a lemon, garlic, olive oil, vinegar and oregano concoction. I then made a green salad with many of the same flavors, cut up some tomatoes, pickled some red onions, cut up some feta and threw some olives I bought today at the Greek store into a dish. The chicken was grilled on my cast iron indoor grill. Considering the huge lunch we had at Rincon Mexicano, we didn't eat much of this. Plenty left for a meal tomorrow.

    <happier house update> We went to the fabricator's building today and the new slab was waiting for us. Indeed, it is the same stone, and they will be able to cut a piece that matches beautifully. Heaters have gone in. Still not happy with the shower hardware installation, but that will have to wait for another day. The Great Sergio is getting hard to reach these days.<end happier house update>

    Minus Oh noooooo! Mr Bill!!! That cannot have happened! I'm glad you had a good time though, that is great.

    I hope all the parents are doing better and are glad for those that are and pray for those that are in progress

    In my last post I signed myself out of the ER after reading my EKG and looking at my first enzymes. Nurses are the worst.

    Going to find about my torn meniscus tomorrow. What? How did that happen.

    My job (awful) that I work at 32 (40) hours a week has decided to go with non-contractors,I am a contractor- and posted all our jobs and asked if I want to work full time-no thanks- so I will wait until they hire someone and then do something else.

    I will retire in December and maybe move to the Friend's (Quaker) house on Beacon St Boston

    Things are kind of up in the air with my daughter's mother in law recently diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer right out of the gate and where we will live.

    For dinner goat milk brie on sale from Whole Foods,crackers and maybe some Corona

    Took my friend's kids to the fire dept last Sunday, we had such a good time, we took them donut holes and they showed them the fire trucks and let them wear the hats and gave them junior Fire Fighter badges and we took a pic with them and they turned on the lights and siren. So cute!

    Broadway Cellars is doing a full St. Patrick’s Day menu Thurs. night: corned beef & cabbage, shepherd’s pie, poached Irish salmon, fish & chips. Hoping they lay in a bottle or two of Kaliber (great non-alc. made by Guinness) so I can indulge authentically yet guilt-free. Tonight looks like a long one--polls in IL are reporting shortages of both GOP and Dem ballots and many are staying open an extra 90 min. Torn between ordering out for pizza or tandoori, nuking some hot wings (I have a mani tomorrow, so I don’t care if my nails turn orange), cooking some Dreamfields angel hair or making “zoodles” (which just don’t have the right mouthfeel).

    Oh my Minus, did you break your dominant arm? I fell in San Francisco years ago, those sidewalks are so uneven. Glad you didn't need surgery.

    minus - aw crap! I fell and broke my talus in multiple locations - immobilizing for 12 weeks did the trick and I avoided surgery, so hoping the same for you. At least it happened at the end of the trip but, man that sucks!

    susan- yay for the new slab!

    Dinner tonight was pre-seasoned chicken legs (lots of black pepper! Yum!) from WF, some rice cooked in chicken stock and carrots sautéed in clarified butter and some thyme

    Cooking has been hit and miss as usual around here. DD came for the weekend so made some frozen grilled chicken in a big salad. Wanted something easy to put together. Don't think we've seen her since Christmas. I added the leftovers from that to a box of Rice a Roni and some terrible meatballs I had made and frozen. They were ground chicken and thankyouverymuch I will stick to Rosina's frozen. They did all right in the conglomeration and we ate it. Last night DH had chili and I don't think I had anything. Tonight I made a tenderized flank steak baked in the oven with peppers, onion, halved cherry tomatoes, and supposed to be mushrooms which is not a fav. of DH so skipped those. Made a sauce to bake it in of ketchup, hoisin sauce, a bit of salsa and Worcestershire sauce. It turned out really good over plain white rice. Will do it again for any other steak type stuff I come across. It was 0.6# so the only leftovers are the rice/sauce darn it.

    Driving friend back to doc tomorrow. We usually go for fast food lunch - she can't drive so doesn't get out much. Probably make DH a baked potato or something. Need to grocery shop. Ran thru Thur night to pick up a few things and get a presc. refill. Had to have the refill redone - filled it with the wrong generic. They have been very good about filling my Letrozole with the generic I want but not this time. So I got only a very few things as I was on my way to a church meeting.

    We did BBQ steaks for our anniversary weekend b4 last but no idea what we had last week.

    Minus - I echo SK at least it was on your last day there. Oweee. Good question posed above - was it your dominate arm?

    Nancy - so good to hear your dad is doing so well.

    Bedo - Is this the handwriting on the wall about your job? I neglected to say how sorry I am to hear about your DD's mother-in-law.

    Susan - glad to see it was a "happy" house update today. Amazing they were able to find more of the same slab.

    Special - those sauteed cabbage dishes sound very good. I like cabbage, DH thinks it's only good for slaw.

    Head is about to hit the keyboard falling asleep.

    auntie - at the risk of sounding like Dr. Suess, I would drink beer with you on a beach, in a house, on a boat, on a porch, etc. Lol!

    luv - I like cabbage too! And it is cruciferous so it's good for us! Yay! I also need to grocery shop - I have been putting it off, but I am rapidly running out of fresh produce! I have my letrozole special ordered, it is not the usual formulary, they get it right about 50% of the time, but have been better lately. It looks like my 5 years are up in June, my MO did the BCi test and while I am high risk for recurrence according to the genetic assay this test does on my original tumor, it shows no benefit from extending anti-hormonals beyond that point. So... I only have to refill my prescription a few more times. I am going to talk to my MO about what else I can do to mitigate my risk - it will be an interesting conversation.

    Hope the moms and dads are hanging in there, and the kids of said moms and dads - such a hard thing. I am blessed that my in-laws are doing so well at this point, almost 85 and 91. Eeesh - so much worry!

    Went ahead with the Buffalo wings (made dip with some Buttermilk Blue cheese crumbles) and celery sticks (4 ribs’ worth). This afternoon on my walk back from the polling place I treated myself to a kids’ size scoop of chocolate frozen custard at Lickety Splits. I felt guilty as hell, but it was delicious. (They never used to offer kids’ size scoops before, so I had to stay away from there except to buy sugar-free chocolates). Still hungry--probably gonna make myself a decaf breve cappuccino with a low-carb oatmeal cookie and a square of dark chocolate. Results aren’t in yet in IL on the Dem. side or MO on either side......gonna be a long, long night (and with storms rolling through we may lose signal or even power just when they’re ready to call the races).

    Tonight, for my daughter's birthday, we are having Maryland stuffed ham. Yummy and oh so tasty.

    For those who have not had the privilege to taste this culinary delight, we make it with a corned ham. Slice off a lot of the fat and cut slits in the ham all over to put the stuffing in. The stuffing is made of shredded cabbage, shredded kale, shredded onions, mustard seed, black pepper, red pepper, and red pepper flakes. Stuff the ham with this mixture and cover with cheese cloth. Boil for as long as it takes to get to an internal temp of 155. Remove from water. Keep in cheese cloth and keep in fridge for at least 24 hours. Slice and eat! Oh my gosh good!

    If anyone wants the real full recipe, just let me know.

    3333, I have never heard of a Maryland stuffed ham....regional recipes are so fascinating!

    I have not been in a cooking mood at all. Been trying to do some organizing of our upstairs before my friend arrives from FL next Tuesday. So many books, so little shelf space.....and sewing materials.....eeek!

    Mon evening, after stretching class, we attended a local rep's fundraiser and had a couple of appetizers there...then came home and had cabbage soup, hummus and crackers. Yesterday afternoon we went to see Maggie Smith in Lady In A Van. She is amazing! After, we had a quick dinner at a little Greek restaurant (kind of a luncheonette style spot) near the theater....DH had the lamb shish kebab and I had spanakopita (sp?) with side grk salads, wonderful fresh pita bread and that sour cream, garlic, cuke blend that I love and won't try to spell. Then we ran off to a lecture in our library's Presidential Elections series.

    Today I am STAYING HOME! Well, maybe just a trip to the gym. And having read lots of recipes for madeleines, I think I will make some batter for them. It can be refrigerated for up to three days. If I do that, I can bake them for my neighbors' bourbon tasting gathering on Sat. I may also make pizzelle dough since I have a few events to attend at which the guests would enjoy those. Flavors will probably be meyer lemon, and orange/cardamom.

    Carole, I hope your mother is recovering well, and Nance, it is good to hear of your dad's progress.

    I just saw nat'l weather and am hoping all of those in last night's midwest storm's path are safe and sound.

    Goats, I don't think the writing is on the wall about my job, I turned down the permanent offer. No one wants my job, not even me. Too much paperwork,so I'll just hang out, if they manage to hire someone they can have it, but I don't think I'll be going anywhere soon. I really just want to work until next spring when I will sell my house after I do some repairs.

    Not sure what's for dinner.

    This has turned into another "review and correction of billing practices day" I have received a bill for $546.24 and it took me 1hour 45 minutes minutes talking to the hospital and ins co to discover that they put in the wrong code. I KNEW I didn't owe it and specifically told the tech which code to put in when I left and she didn't listen . Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr I correct these bills every Wednesday on my day off.

    Hi Minus, just a note. I am recovering from broken shoulder and wrist on right arm. Fell backwards. I have pins and plates, yikes, but after 4 or 5 weeks I feel better. Just letting arm recover takes time. I have to have help chopping and can sew a little, but it sure is better. There is hope.

    Thanks everyone for your good healing wishes. Fortunately it's the left shoulder & not my dominant side. Meal will be the one piece I have left of a huge sourdough turkey & Havarti sandwich from SF. Tomorrow I'll polish off the orange chicken & fried rice bowl my son bought at Panda Express. Not too bad.

    Dinner tonight was my Ramadan [Harira] soup that I had stashed in the freezer. But, I wasn't able to eat much, and then I wanted some popcorn. So, popcorn was made in the wok and I "dressed" with a bit of Cabot white cheddar cheese powder. Gave me the salt boost that my body seemed to need today. Day 15 is pretty rough. I would have loved to crawl into bed and spend the full day there, but instead, I worked with some clients on a parsing engine, billed last month's hours [wildly late], packed four boxes for the kids, and then actually built some of the parsing engine. I took a nap that lasted 1.5 hrs, When I woke, all I wanted to do was sleep. Yea, day 15 is rough.

    <another house update> 8am the new countertops should arrive! I will be there. I can't begin to tell you how much I want these to be totally right. The floor guys come in during the afternoon. Maybe the house will actually be ready to clean by the middle of next week.<end another house update>

    Oh Bedo I truly meant nothing ugly with my comment. Just thinking it was a sign from God or some higher being. When things like contracts/hiring practices changes it certainly seems a sign that the times they are a changin'. Hope you can hang in there until next spring. I despise having to correct insurance companies. My laughable mammogram place and the way they want to overbill me makes me furious. Turns out despite the original estimate (and what I was told I would need to pay the day it was done) of $1000 I actually owed $215, a much more reasonable/manageable amount which I graciously paid. My friend that I drove to the doc today has $4000 in lab work denied by her insurance co. She is disabled and I do believe she is on Medicaid but I don't ask a bunch of questions. She has a genetic disease and is progressing rapidly. Not sure how the lab bill will be taken care of but her PCP seems to thinks it will be OK in the end.

    And I wanted to say how very happy I am to see you posting again. You were missed.

    SpecialK - I don't think I've heard of the BCi test. I did read on it and it says run on original specimen. Do they keep slides that long? Or how does it work? I'm due for my annual MO visit in July. Would love, love to stop it next year but he hedged last year when I asked him. Yes my letrozole is Roxane which turns out has fewer fillers than even name brand Femara.

    Fingers crossed Susan that all goes well with counter tomorrow. More pictures, More pictures.

    Dinner tonight was just what I thought. Friend and I had Chicken Express which is much like Kentucky Fried but I think maybe a TX chain. Best iced tea ever. DH had tortilla chips and dip for dinner. We shared a small serving of peach cobbler from the grocery that I finally did make it to after dropping friend at home. Tomorrow I plan on putting a smallish roast in slow cooker.

    luv - yes, the BCI test is run on the original surgical specimen. I believe that most labs keep that tissue for 10 years, if not longer. My BMX was in Nov. of 2010, and my tissue was still there. I had originally thought that this was a blood test, and had blood drawn after my last MO appt, but it was for a look at my parathyroid because my calcium was high. I had no idea that my MO was arranging the BCI test right then as I thought it would not be done until this coming June when I reach five years on Femara. Having this test run on my original specimen is a bit unnerving in light of the results - high recurrence risk with no benefit from continuing Femara. My questions then becomes, was it providing me any benefit during the five years I have been taking it if my original surgical specimen says no benefit in continuing? I will be mighty pissed if not because the SE have not been fun!

    PICTURES!!!! The countertops were perfect. The big boss came. The smaller boss came. The sherpa came. They were SO careful!!! The seam was blended perfectly from the two stones.
