Imaging during Neoadjuvant Treatment
Hello:
Did any of you receive much monitoring (ultra sound, MRI...) of your tumor during treatment? If so, how many and at what points?
Thanks,
Yvette

Hi Yvette,
I had to ask for it but got an ultrasound and mammogram between Taxol/Carboplatin and starting AC. My MO said manual exams only are standard until finishing chemo and said I was responding, but I really needed the imaging for peace of mind. Tumor was half its original size based on the imaging.

The TC killed my cancer 3 treatments. Because my previous dr didn't leave a marker at biopsy time. I had to have some extra tests to ensure they knew where the cancer had been. While I could still feel a small lump, the MRI with dye, showed the cancer was completely dead. No veins were supporting the region it had been. It was a dead space. I'm kinda lucky my first dr messed up or I would never had that test. The test was awful, but it was incredible to see it, and see it dead. It involved being injected with some blue dye. It was injected into the nipple. Thank god they let me take pain meds first.

I had 4 rounds of AC, two weeks apart, the 12 taxol, weekly. I had ultrasound halfway through taxol.

I had an MRI after my four rounds of AC and another after four rounds of Taxol.

Thanks for the input. I had an ultra sound to place a marker in my tumor after three of my four rounds of AC. The tumor had reduced in size dramatically; I was easily able to feel the difference. Now after four rounds of AC and six rounds of T/C it's very hard for me to discern the tumor from breast tissue. While that is most likely a good sign, it does make me nervous not knowing exactly what is going on in there. My Oncologist does not feel further imaging is necessary.
Thanks again!
Yvette

I had 4 rounds of A/C and have had 11 of 12 weekly taxol/Carboplatin. I had an MRI this week. I can no longer feel the tumor. The MRI report says there is a marked decrease, and a small area of enhancement consistent with residual tumor. I have an appointment with the surgeon next week to make a final surgical plan.

Hi TwinEagleMo! Congrats on being mostly finished with your chemo! I have five more weekly Taxol/Carbo and I am good and sick of it! I had to have blood with my last infusion as the Carbo is knocking my counts back quite a bit. I don't feel bad, still very active but the numbers tell a different story. I was not going to be able to have my chemo if I did not get blood (it really grossed me out!!).
I'd be really interested to hear what your surgeon suggests as a final plan. I am in Australia (from California) and while my surgeon is very up to date on treatment she says typically AU is a couple of years behind the US with regard to treating TNBC. This board helps me see what treatments everyone else gets and gives me lots to ask questions about. For example, it was here that I first read about Carboplatin and brought the info to my Oncologist who agreed to add it to my Taxol. I am his first patient receiving this protocol. Anyway, good luck with your surgeon and your plan.
Cheers,
Yvette
