Sorry, I just started a thread, but in it forgot to ask this:

Is there anyone out there who had BI RAD 5 linear microcalcifications come back B9? Or anyone whose doc/radiologist suspected DCIS but it came back as something worse, or B9?

Waiting for biopsy results but trying to collect as much info as I can until results come in.  Torture. :/

Thanks all.

    Its simply awful to wait.

There is no way anyone can know for sure if a lesion is DCIS without doing a biopsy and looking at the cells under the microscope. Linear calcifications are commonly from DCIS, but that doesn't mean that all linear calcifications are DCIS. If I remember correctly, awb (on the LCIS forum) had a BIRADS of 5, and it ended up being LCIS (which is usually considered benign.) I'm not sure if she had calcifications or not, but it ended up being LCIS without any DCIS. (Don't expect that because its not common.)

Someone who has BIRADS 5 imaging has about a 5% chance of being benign. So that means of course there are people who have BIRADS 5 scores and it turns out benign. You probably won't get 20 replies to this post from different women who had a BIRADS 5. But, on average, about 1 in 20 women who have a BIRADS 5 score have it turn out to be benign.

So, you want to be prepared for DCIS (or less commonly invasive), but there's certainly a chance it will be benign too. No matter what happens, you will not be alone.

Leaf, thanks for your input. I did read about the 95% chance of being cancer, and I know there's always that 5% chance of it being nothing...I'm just afraid that it might be worse than DCIS (ie, invasive) and was wondering if that's something I should prepare myself for.  I hate weekends when I can't call any doctors for answers.  Thanks for taking the time to respond.  :)

Mine was a BIRADS 5 and it ended up as LCIS. (I think they had suspected DCIS initially). My microcalcifications were tightly clustered on mammo. Praying you get good results soon.

I had linear calcifications and birads 4 which turned out to be ADH upon excisional biopsy.

    Monday is coming soon

    Dear sweet ladies,

I am sorry for the worry you have been facing. A few days ago, I was one of you. I am 39, eat pretty healthy, I nursed my son for more than two years! I was shocked to find out that I do have cancer. Ladies: they classify for a reason. And, the radiologist gets iterative feedback if they have marked too many results incorrectly. So, we should prepare for the outcome based on the statistics but cherish your hope. A few days ago, I was an entirely different person who will never exist again. Enjoy each day before the results.

    be happy. stay strong.

    love from your sister! *

    hello sweet ladies,

apologies for the late response--i'd forgotten to add this thread to "my favorites" to get notifications of comments. I appreciate all of you taking the time to reply to my question.

I received my results late last week: I have high-grade DCIS on the left (BIRAD 5 side) and grade 3 IDC on the right (BIRAD 4 side), stage undetermined. I was initially told I have IDC on both sides but the report I received a few days later seems to indicate otherwise. I found it interesting that the side they were less confident about being cancer turned out to be the much more "serious" side.

Laura, sorry for your diagnosis. I received my biopsy report the same day you were diagnosed. I'm young too, 38, and have a 3 year old. This all seems so surreal....

    ella21,

i am so so so very sorry for your diagnosis! please give your son a hug from my son! and here's a hug from me to you.

how did you find the lump? i just felt mine randomly one day.

you are right, it does seem surreal. what's the difference between getting the biopsy report and the a diagnosis.

please consider getting a second opinion.

    Good evening ladies~

I'm so truly sorry to hear of your diagnosis. It's hard for anyone to go through this but to be young with children at home...I can't imagine. I'm 50 and we are empty nesters now, excited to finally be able to travel. We had planned it all out and couldn't wait to run off into our new beginning. Just goes to show that our plan may not necessarily be God's plan. Well, I was blessed with an amazing doctor so I pray tomorrow when we go in for my results that they will be negative! Keep in touch ladies, I'll be sending prayers your way.

so sorry for both you ladies. I was diagnosed at 34 and while pregnant with my first child. Fast forward five years and I'm fine and my daughter is just perfect. Having young kids is hard during treatment but it also gives you so much motivation to get through it all. Good luck on your treatment and I hope everything goes as well as can be expected. Sending hugs to you both!
