A recent study has found that Prolia reduced the risk of breaking a bone by 50% in postmenopausal women diagnosed with early-stage, hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer who were taking an aromatase inhibitor.

Any one switched to Prolia because of this study? My MO just called with the results of my most recent DEXA (worse but still osteopenic) but did not recommend going on Prolia at this time. His reason seemed to be cost (I have good insurance and am confident it will be covered). If not, I've always gotten my appeals approved!

Will add my personal story about taking Prolia on the bone forum later Golden (Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada).

Mods the BCO report of the ABCSG-18 study above is based on the wording presented at the ASCO meeting which as it happens is slightly different to the wording of the published Lancet study summary. I was wondering why ASCO dropped the mention of one death in the denosumbab group that might have been related to the drug, because it was not proven? But then why the mention in the Lancet summary? Also I guess I've been reading too many biopsy reports but since when is an interpretation of a finding a conclusion.

Hmmm . . . as I read the abstracts, the study looked at AIs and Prolia, are there other studies that have an arm where women were on Fosamax? Not sure it matters since I've been on Fosamax and my DEXA scores got worse. MO is not recommending change to Prolia at this time but it seems we need to do something different!

I was diagnosed with osteopenia years ago, was on fozamax for a few years, until it gave me acid reflux. The fozamax worked but went off of it because of the GERD, took other drugs, protonix etc, still showed osteopenia in more scans, then in 2013 fell and fractured 5 different bones so another bone scan still showed osteopenia, but since I fractured decided to go with prolia shot after discussion with my dentist and gyn. Had first shot last Thursday so next one will be in 6 months.

Saw my MO yesterday, he is going to request insurance approval for me to switch from Fosamax to Prolia. My bones have gotten worse since going on Arimidex a year and a half ago. Any suggestions for making it go well? Hearing about your experience with Prolia will be helpful to me!

no side effects with the prolia shot, so far so good, have not been on anastrozole long enough to know if this has any ill effects on bone density. Hope not! Do have a tooth issue, so going to talk to dr about it soon. My MO still suggests vitamin d and calcium to help aid the bone growth.

I had my first Prolia injection a few weeks ago and much prefer it over IV Zometa infusions (I have terrible veins to start IV). I was dx with osteopenia after 2 years on Femara and if I recall had approx 8 Zometa infusions over the years. I'm really hoping Prolia will make a difference in my bone health.

Thanks for the info! I'll keep my fingers crossed as the request goes to the insurance company.

cp418 - Did you have any reaction at the site or other issues?

No - I had no issues and it was very easy for me to have an injection over IV. I think I was more achy post the Zometa infusions and didn't notice any discomfort after the Prolia shot. The nurse also reminded me important to take Vit D and Calcium supplements for either bone building medications.

Thanks, cp418. I appreciate that info, as I'm going to start either zometa or prolia early next year.

I hear you on the Vit. D and calcium - I never cut myself any slack on those anymore.

I start Prolia on Monday and am encouraged also with the latest results of a study that came out at the San Antonio Breast Cancer conference in December~~5 year study showing that Prolia also helps against breast cancer recurrence.

Seeing my dentist today to be sure all is good and then will follow up with the MO to see what they've worked out with the insurance company for me starting Prolia.

I would recommend having a DEXA scan as close to the start of Prolia as possible so that you know your density starting point.  It may take up to two years (basically 4 injections, each six months apart) before you see improvement.  For me, at the fifth injection of Prolia I was back to normal density from just osteoporotic at several measurements.  I had been osteopenic for nine years prior to diagnosis with breast cancer due to total hyst/ooph at 45, but had remained stable until chemo and six months of Femara caused serious degradation.

Had my Dexa just before the holidays and the MO wanted a "no work needed" report from dentist before starting. Unfortunately, the place where I've always done my scans has changed a equipment and said we couldn't directly compare to previous reports but the numbers had decreased from previous ones. Still osteopenic not in the osteoporosis range but I want to stay on the AI (have been on it about a year and a half). Still have to see if the insurance agrees.

Dentist said I was good to go and the insurance company approved the Prolia. I'm off for my first injection today. Hope all goes well.

Mine did the same, however his face when he saw my numbers dripped was horrifying. They stopped the Fosimax immediately as if I continue, they would turn to powder. Insurance didn't cover it the first time but after resubmitting the Prolia now they are all in.

golden the prolia didn't bother you did it? I am due for 2nd prolia in April, so far no issues, and trying yoga and prunes, calcium, and more for stronger bones too.

No, I really didn't feel anything at all. This week, seemed to have a bit of a sore tooth which scared me but has gotten better so I think all is well. Thinking strong bones and wearing my Fitbit every day. They did have me wait a half an hour or so after the shot and rechecked my blood pressure before I headed home. My injection was given at the center's infusion center.

How many IU a day do you ladies take of VitD3 and Calcium? I take Fosomax once a week and 5,000 IU of Vit D plus 1,200 IU of Calcium. I had some bone loss at my first Dexa and it increased by the second. I heard you can over do the Vit D thing.

I am working out 3-4 days a week but I want to see one of the personal trainers there so I can do some weights. Not sure how I should go about it with the risk of LE

I took 4,000 IU a day until my blood levels of Vitamin D were raised to the 60+ level. Then I cut back to 2,000 IU a day. My internist was concerned about Vitamin D levels going too high. Make sure your doctor checks your blood levels of Vitamin D. That will determine the amount you need to take.

Since I posted last, I stopped fosamax and did the Prolia injections for two years. It did a great job of helping with osteopenia in the areas I had it. I am also being better about taking my calcium and walking for exercise.

My MO did check my Vit D and it went up to 80 and then down to 55. She said they tend to fluctuate. I have started seeing an internist, so maybe I'll ask him. This December is my 7 year cancerverseray so I may be going off the AI. I never had bone density issues before and it doesn't run in my family. I will have another scan this fall. Fingers crossed!

Several years ago I was diagnosed with osteoporosis. I had been on several different drugs for my bones but all the side effects were bad and my bones weren’t getting better so we just kept changing things up. Then i went on Prolia for about 6 years (2 shots a year). A few years ago my doctor took me off of it since you should only take it for 5 years. At that time my dexa showed I was osteopenia.

Three years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer and went through chemo and radiation. I had a dexa scan done and it showed I had osteoporosis again. After treatment my oncologist suggested I take Aremidex because I was post menopausal and my cancer was estrogen positive. Lots of side effects and osteoporosis. She had me do Zometa infusions to protect my bones. I fell back in May and broke my wrist. I have back pain that has never gone away. Nothing showed up on the X-Ray on my back so I don’t know why I am in pain. I would like to go back on Prolia since it did make my bones better and I did not have any side effects.

Update for me is that when I went to my MO at the end of July, she wanted to do a dexa scan to see if I should stay on Arimidex for another 3 years. Last scan showed great progress in adding bone to the point where I was considered normal. This one again showed osteopenia with a 7% reduction in my spine and a 12% reduction in my hip., even after being focused on taking my calcium and walking 4 miles 3-4x a week. I'm going to continue the AI for 3 more years so Prolia is back on my regimen. Not happy, but I don't have any issues as far as side effects.
