OK, I got nuttin'. Dorothy Gale's the only fictional character I can think of, but she appeared in multiple titles, not just adaptations of the initial story.

My husband and I both first thought of Alice (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland), but a) the fictional Alice was blonde and b) it was (arguably) first published in Great Britain.

If your fictional character is not she, then (ruefully), yes I need the hint.

No blondes. She is a brunette and there were 2 live action movies a few years ago about her, competing movies, came out at the same time. I believe one of the movies had a sequel already or it is coming out soon. I don't think that we think of this character from a book from a long time ago but she originally was from a German book.
