How to tell if sudden vaginal bleeding is a concern?

Options

My periods stopped during chemo about 10 months ago. My Drs all said they didn't expect that they would come back. Today, I started bleeding. How can you tell if it's a period or something to be concerned about? It seems like a stupid question but it is completely unexpected and I'm currently at a higher risk of cervical cancer and of course, the increased chance of uterine cancer from the tamoxifen.

    Heyas

It's probably just your cycle returning but I'd check it out anyway...better to know exactly what it is that not.

    All the best

Thanks for the reply! Yeah I'm guessing it probably is, though it's kind of funny to suddenly realize that you're not sure what the normal indicators of it are anymore! How can they tell if it's a period or not? It just so happens I had my followup with my onc this morning and told her, nope they hadn't returned. Ah well!

I would call your GYN to make an appointment.

Tamoxifen can play tricks on your uterus. I had such weird bleeding on it but my gyn followed me closely. The biopsies, ultrasounds and such were a pain for sure. I ended up with a stupid polyp that bled lightly for months. Once I had the ooph everything settled down. Nothing was ever sinister.

Thanks everyone. My Oncologist is having me stop the Tamoxifen and then get an ultrasound in a few weeks to make sure what's going on. I'm hoping that the silver lining is that the reprieve from the menopause that seemed permanent will mean my metabolism can pick back up a bit and I can lose some weight gained during chemo and from the menopause/tamoxifen.
