ksusan, I am having recon (so not answering for all on this thread) but appreciate your offer;
however popping on to say how much I love your tagline: Mutant uprising quashed. makes me smile each time. And smiles are so needed!
-
I'm having a bilateral mastectomy, no recon. Is that "bmx"???
-
okbecca BMX, even though that abbreviation always reminds me of dirt bikes.
tried to find/ post a pic - instead I found a link to a badass female BMX stunt rider. all the ups and downs and dizzying turns seem apropos for what most of us have felt we are going through lately...

-
I forgot to post this: The pre-ops went well. The anesthesiologist said I would "do fine" with being under. There was one brief hiccup with my ekg. The tech looked at it and asked me if anyone had ever told me I had a "block." I thought she meant blocked artery or something and my reaction was "oh crap, not something else." It seems like every time I talk to a doc, there's more bad news. But it turned out the be something about the electrical firing of my heart, and not a major prob.
I know this won't happen, but I would so love it if, after this is over, I never saw the inside of another medical clinic or hospital again.
Anyway, I'm good to go for Monday.
-
I always think of BMX bikes too! I am glad to hear that driving is different for each, I read one lady said a month and I was worried it was like that for everyone.
Okbecca, sorry you have so much more to think about. I have had some health issues the past couple of years after having swine flu but nothing like you are going through. It does still make me scared to go under anesthesia but I was just under 7 years ago for a laparoscopy and 5 years ago for an endoscopy so I am trying to remind myself that I did fine then. I also indulge in wine/beer way more than I should so that worries me too! I will be thinking of you. Also, my doctors really seemed confused (almost saddened) that I wasn't chosing reconstruction. My best friend said she never saw someone come in for a mammogram that didn't have reconstruction so maybe it isn't a very common choice, especially at my age? Are you planning any future construction? I am not planning on it but I have a fear they are going to spare a little skin incase I change my mind and I want to make sure that they do not do that. I am hoping for nice flat results. Have you had to mention anything to your surgeon about not sparing any skin?
-
People who have bilateral without recon don't get mammograms, so that reduces the number your friend would see. My BS said in his experience (37+ years), about 50% reconstruct, and about 50% of those who reconstruct wind up undoing it, FWIW.
-
I'm done, ladies! In my room been here about an hour. I'm feeling surprisingly well, just tired but I suppose getting up at 3 am will do that to anyone. First thing I wanted to say was that the injection for the SNB was not bad at all! Had the cream and they used a freeze spray. But honestly, breastfeeding hurt worse! And my surgeon got it all!!! Step one done, wishing the same for everyone else so far!
-
Mecool - that is so good to hear! Now just rest, rest, rest. You will be healed in no time.
I'm 7 weeks post-op today (UMX in January ) and vacationing in Vail with family. No skiing for me this year but I'm walking about 6 miles a day. Here's my photo from yesterday walking through Ford Park:

iammags - hope that you are doing well!
Wishing you all a happy Wednesday!
-
grandma3x - that picture is beautiful!
I'll be joining this group - no surgery date set yet, but I expect it to be the third or fourth week of the month.
I just finished my chemo - had chemo first so I could get some HER2+ specific stuff they don't offer after surgery. Post-chemo MRI to check on tumor size is this Friday, and I'm hoping for big, big shrinkage. I'm planning a lumpectomy, but I didn't realize that getting a reduction at the same time was a possibility. Iammags - how did you arrange that?
March 7 is my 40th birthday, and I'll be thinking of the ladies here having surgery that day (anything beats thinking about turning 40!).
-
Hi: My mx with DIEP recon is confirmed for March 24
-
Furiosa - don't knock 40 - I'd love to be celebrating that one again from the far side of 60 lol.
Grandma3x - lovely pic - hope you are having a wonderful holiday!
Thinking of everyone facing surgery and speedy, uneventful recoveries to thos who have come through it. hugs -
Way to go Mecool !! Now rest, rest, rest.
McKayleigh, when I first mentioned the idea of a bmx, it upset my oncologist, who insisted I talked to someone in "plastics." I decided against the "plastics" appt. My surgeon, on the other hand, made it clear that I no way needed to be under for the time it would take to do reconstruction.
That's ok with me. I call my cancer "Plum." I see her as a black mamba who thinks she's a pet. I want to get her gone before she remembers that she's a black mamba and does what black mambas do.
My surgeon sounded like she intended to take it all, but I'll remind her. I want Ms Plum gone, gone, gone.
-
3/23 - sentinel nodes biopsy (PRAYING IT IS CLEAR!!!!!!!)
3/30-BMX with TE reconstruction phase 1
Get me off this rollercoaster please
-
Mecool, so glad you are done and feeling well. Rest rest rest! {{{{{{hugs}}}}}}
Grandma3x: beautiful pics. Your prior surgical thread posts have inspired me to try to start walking more after surgery - bought new sneakers today. just need to replace the fitbit battery.
Furiosa - turning 40 didn't bother me. I was more bothered turning 39. But still would love to be 39 again.
Stellamaris - I read through Feb surgeries posts in prep for this month. Sorry you had to have multiple procedures. Hoping this is the last!.
Iammags: thinking of you today. {{{{{{hugs}}}}}}

Mecool and so glad the SNB injection went well. Less painful then breast feeding - does that include when they didn't let go but tried to whip their little heads around?
-
Ksusan, I never put much thought into it I guess. Do they do US's then? I honestly haven't put thought into the after, just trying to get through the here and now!
Mecool, so glad all went well for you, reading your post calmed my anxiety a bit.
Okbecca, they still wanted me talk to the PS too. He actually agreed that recon is weeks and years of surgeries and understood why I wouldn't put myself through that. He even offered to come in at the end of my surgery to close to ensure a nice close.
Furiosa, I will be thinking of you Mon and hoping you are having much more fun than me, you only turn 40 once, enjoy it!!
-
Typically no scans after BMX without recon unless there are indications of a problem. They just put their hands on you every 3-6 months and do some blood work (which varies more widely between MOs).
-
Asante314 - your post made me laugh so hard- my kids are grown but I remember that pain like it was yesterday!
-
cincimom i just noticed your post and wanted to say hi and good luck with your upcoming PBMX. I had a PBMX in November and am
scheduled for exchange surgery march 16. I am also BRCA2+
I would be happy to answer any questions.
(Hugs) Diane
-
Asante, please add me to the March surgery list. 3/16 exchange surgery. Thanks !!
Diane
-
iammags - thinking about you, hoping everything went well and that you're feeling ok today!
-
warrior wannabe & New_me: I've added you to the list.
warrior wannabe: I am curious about the SNB being a separate surgery date than your BMX.
New_me: I'll admit I wish I was on the list for exchange this month, closer to the end of this journey.
Mecool, hope you had a restful day
IamMags, thinking about you as well
gentle hugs to both
perhaps a silly question, to those who have already had MX, I understand the no raising arms, lifting... as I go through each day I realize i often bend forward to get a pan, a hair brush or new roll of TP, etc. How long until these simple tasks might be doable - guessing I need to move my toothbrush/ deodorant, etc. out of their hiding spots in my bathroom cabinet.
I skipped the prescription mastectomy cami: do the drains always need to be supported, or can they just hang? Thinking support or they would pull at their insertion sites, and guessing there is pretty much no chance of rolling onto them in our sleep due to discomfort sleeping any way other than on our backs.

I wasn't given a restriction about raising my arms. Surgeon just said not to cart my 40-pound toddler around 3 days post-op.
I didn't have a problem reaching items in cabinets by 5 days post-op, if not by 3 days. I was driving at 6 days post-op. Probably by 5 days I was picking stuff off the floor, doing dishes, and laundry. I didn't have any reconstruction.
I didn't buy any special garments. The nurse in the hospital gave me safety pins and we just pinned them to my hospital gown and then at home, I just pinned them to my shirt. I only had 2 drains.
-
mecool - So glad you are feeling ok and that you are out of surgery. (Can't believe you feel well enough to get online, but sure glad you told us about that snb. I've been so nervous about it!)
Iammags - thinking about you. Hoping you are resting now.
Just talked to a friend of mine and thought I'd share her funny story. A couple of days after her surgery she called a girlfriend and asked why she hadn't called to ask how she was. The friend replied that they had already talked right after her surgery, for at least an hour! When my friend looked at her phone, she realized that she had made 35 phone calls that day. They were all to random people, not all good friends. For the next few days her friends called her back and laughed with her because she had called and said strange things to them like, "Hey! I got new Boobs today!!!" So. Lesson for us all. Keep those cell phones out of reach until you are well off your pain meds!
Big week coming up...Looks like there are about 7 of us going under the knife.
I think I need to look at Grandma3x calming picture again. I kinda wish I was there too.
I've been busy making list after list. Inlaws are taking care of my big kids. My brother will have my babies. My mama will have me (I decided to heal for 3 weeks at her house so I wouldn't try and cheat by picking up my babies or the house.) . That's a lot of packing.
Was thinking about going topless to let the girls enjoy their last few days of life, free and bouncy, but thought my teenage boys and in laws might get a little weirded out. Hubby said he was all for it...
-
Yes, be careful with cell phones. I don't really remember my husband giving me back mine. I do remember trying to text people (including my breast surgeon) and accidentally hitting the phone button so I started calling them instead.
-
skittle girl and chrissmiss: I am up way too late getting work done, before heading back to work in 4 hours (sigh). taking one quick break and stopped here and really enjoyed the laugh.. ok no drunk texting... no post MX texting. Think any of the wireless carriers will take that lesson for a commercial - even during pinktober!
-
haha! You guys make me laugh....I had fears of what I might say coming out of surgery but thank goodness I was coherent enough to not make a fool of myself! I have been using my arms as normal just fine, no restrictions. I can reach them all the way up with no problems. I'm being a bit gentler with them but my surgeon said that I can't rip or tear anything so the more I start using them, the better off I'll be. I have been able to reach everything I need so far. I am in love with the post op camis, the pockets for the drains are amazing but I do have them pinned to the shirt as well, no way I want to risk them hanging, one nurse forgot to pin the side with 2 drains to my gown on Wednesday night and that might have been the worst pain I've felt so far so I highly recommend keeping them pinned somewhere. As soon as my husband gets back from dropping my girls off at school I'm going to shower. A little anxious about that but I feel so gross. Other than that, I can not believe how well I'm feeling. You guys have all got this! Have faith in yourself and your bodies....this is one huge step to check off our lists of get the damn disease out of us!
-
The drains can't hang. They will pull and be uncomfy. You can pin them to a shirt or vest with safety pins or tuck them in large shirt pockets--no need for a separate garment if you don't want one.
I was restricted to 5# and arms no higher than my shoulders for several weeks. About a month after surgery, my BS cleared me for "everything," to which my MO said, "Yeah, no" and gave me some range of motion stretches and allowed me to gradually increase weight, torque, and reach. This is about reducing the risk of pulling open surgical incisions and reducing the risk of lymphedema. Neither are good news.
-
And this is an example of how every surgeon is different. Because mine said using my arms as much as I can right now will reduce the risk of lymphedema. I just showered, washed my hair as normal and I feel amazing. The lanyards in the shower are brilliant!
-
mecool - so glad you are doing well!
Chris-miss - that story is hilarious! I remember very little about the day of my surgery, but I think I left my cell phone with my husband, so hopefully did not make random calls! I'm glad my photo is bringing you peace.
Today is my last day of vacation I'll meet my DH in Vail for lunch (he's off skiing for the morning) and do a little shopping (mostly window-shopping! The prices here are a bit too steep for my blood!). Then we plan to drive over to Beaver Creek, where my sister and her husband are skiing for the day. Hope to meet up with them for an after-ski drink to finish off the week.
