Anyone have SSM with Delayed Reconstruction?

I had very large, dense breasts (DDD) and when I was diagnosed with Triple-Negative IDC, I elected for BMX. I also decided on delayed reconstruction with implants, after discussion with both BS and PS, and want to end up with a B/C cup afterwards. My BS was able to do a SSM was was very generous with the skin he left for my PS. I decided to do delayed recon because I was a little concerned that I might still have to have radiation, and wanted to heal as quickly as I could from BMX so I could get started on chemo as soon as possible.

In my head, I anticipated something along the lines of deflated balloons on my chest after my BMX, but the reality is more like firm ridges & folds, reminds me of cauliflower? It's not a surprise, as I reflected on it, as the raw skin inside attaches itself to whatever it can.

I'm not freaking out about how it looks. I assumed it wouldn't be pretty, and my DH is amazingly supportive, but I'm wondering how to care for the leftover skin until it's time for my reconstruction. I'm scheduled for chemo until the end of June, and then will be ready to look at what needs to be done for recon. Is there some massage, or physical therapy that will help the skin become softer, more pliable before recon, or is it just the way it has to be until then.

Anyone with any experience with this. Consulting with Dr. Google finds very little about SSM with delayed recon, other than a study or two that says there are fewer complications with it, as compared with immediate reconstruction.

    Hi WannaCruize,

I had skin sparing BMX (not on purpose) but the ridges and ripples bothered me for at least 6 months. Over time, my scars have softened and flattened. I have not had reconstruction (asked to be left flat). I believe that you can massage the scars with oil or lotion at some point. However, you should check with your surgeon before proceeding. I only massaged mine in the shower with a sudsy wash cloth. Do you have drains? I would definitely consult your surgeon to know when massage might be appropriate.

Hope others who have massaged their scars will post. Best wishes
