I had an mri before needle biopsy. It was clear. Biopsy showed multifocal adh borderline dcis. Getting lumpectomy tomorrow. Glad I did mri at least I know there's nothing else I'm dealing with.
-
I had dcis, needed 3 lu,m pies to get clear margins but never had an mri, maybe if I had would not have needed the 3 lumpies but 8 years out and all cleari

Yes. After a mammogram found DCIS in my left breast, I had an MRI of both. It found previously-undetected IDC and lymph node involvement in the right. This did not show on mammogram.
-
Ksusan, did the Mri show the dcis in left breast??
-
Yes, and DCIS + IDC + positive intramammary and sentinel node in the right.
The mammogram showed DCIS in the left, nothing in the right.
-
I had MRI before MX that showed suspicious spots on the other breast. Nothing was found there. The false positive may have occurred because the MRI was done in the wrong part of my cycle, but there is a risk of finding something that is not really there.
-
LAstar, why did you have masectomy after lumpectomies?
-
I had mri after excisional biopsy positive for dcis. Left clear. Extensive dcis did not show on mam or us. Too much dcis to save breast.
-
No MRI for me - I guess they thought that since the tiny bit of cancer was seen on a mammogram that mammos work well enough for me.
-
No MRI for me either. My small area of DCIS showed up on just mammo. My surgeon does order MRIs for some people so it doesn't appear to have to be done for everyone. I guess each case in individual.

I asked my doctors about a MRI and they told me it wasn't necessary. I am thinking maybe because I am getting a BMX. My husband questioned them because he said "what if something is going on in the left breast and it will be too late after the BMX to test the left sentinel nodes?" They still said they don't see anything and didn't think an MRI was necessary. This did concern me because the reason they recommended a BMX (my good breast too) for me is because my breasts are so dense (all white on film) and they said it would be hard to pick up and growths. SOOOOO, how can they be sure there isn't already something there? Maybe they wouldn't be able to see anything any better on MRI? Who knows, either way, my doctors said no MRI!
-
Possibly. Some of the women who have been having a prophylactic BMX (after testing positive on genetic testing, for example) have been having a tiny "clip" placed to identify the sentinel node(s) without removing it/them. That way, if post-surgery pathology on a believed-to-be benign breast finds a cancer, they can go back and remove the sentinel node for testing.
It sounds like a good idea...but if it appeals to you, you'll want to discuss it with your surgeon.
Just an idea,

I had an MRI before my biopsy. It matched the mammoth.
-
I had very dense breasts on mammogram- couldn't rule out anything and recommended MRI which came back Birads 4. Even with MRI area involved larger than thought based on pathology-area in other breast also being watched
