cytology misinterpretation possibility?

had a core biopsy 10 yrs ago that came up fibroadenoma. It was a very invasive one and i remember it being uncomfortable

I had the same lump rebiopsied 2 weeks ago and the result came back papilloma

A bit confused

    I'm not sure what you mean by "invasive" because fibroadenomas are benign and not invasive. A fibroadenoma does not "change into" a papilloma. One is just denser "fibrous" breast tissue while the other is a "warty" type growth within a duct. There would be nothing to prevent two kinds of growths in the same segment of your breast though.

    sorry i meant the biopsy was very painful the first time

    This is what confused me the first biopsy was more definitive being core and came back fibroadenoma

    Now they say pipalloma from an fna 10 years later and i am going in to get it excised there is only 1 lump

    We don't know a lot about how different breast conditions evolve over time. So as far as I know, we don't know how a papilloma forms. We all want to know 'Why did this happen to me?'. Lots of times we just don't know. Its hard to live with this uncertainty, but I would guess that since we (probably) don't know how a papilloma forms, it would be more likely that the papilloma just happened rather than they mis-interpreted the cytology. Lots can happen in 10 years.

    The good news is that you're taking care of it now, no matter how or when it formed.

    excised and result was fibroadenoma so it was not a papilloma after all that

    Guess goes to show that fnab does have small inaccuracies possibly
