Keep Tumors Alive To Contain Cancer?

I'm a big fan of health researcher Jon Barron, and thought this recent article that spotlights research out of the UK was worth sharing here.

Clearly, it's a very early finding, but certainly food for thought that perhaps will help unlock more discoveries in the area of immunology.

This is very interesting. I've been thinking that maybe one of the keys to preventing resistance to chemotherapy and radiation is promoting the health of normal cells with natural substances like resveratrol and turmeric, which would reduce treatment toxicty. There are plenty of studies indicating compounds that not only don't interfere with standard treatment, but seem to enhance it by reducing the proinflammatory and prometastatic aspects of conventional treatment while protecting normal cells from damage. It's a shame that we aren't applying very much of what we have learned. It just seems like a push to kill "bad guys" (the cancer cells) rather than tip the balance in favor of the body's natural defenses. Why do we not care about natural killer cells until BC is stage IV and we are testing expensive cutting edge immunotherapy drugs?

    More on Piddini's study.

Cell competition is an interesting concept. Plus there seems to be a drug in testing that reduces apoptosis of normal cells to prevent liver damage. It remains to be seen what the side effects will be since apoptosis is necessary in normal cells as well.
