size of lung nodule

I had several nodules in my lungs at diagnosis in 2004...some were ground glass as well. I am nearly 12 years out with no issues. They were monitored for several years and no increase.
Someone told me that if we were all turned inside out there would be all kinds of lumps and bumps which would be normal....but because we have cancer....it is just tougher to accept. I lived on this theory;)
It's hard and scary..I am not trying to downplay that. I get it....but lots of people have these nodules...your oncologist has seen it all. I think most oncologists just don't want any of us to worry until we need to worry.

Lung nodules are probably the most common form of “incidentalomas:” things doctors find while looking for something else, which usually turn out to be nothing or even disappear but cause a lot of anxiety in the meantime. Last May, after my husband’s first hospital admission as a result of a botched colonoscopy perfing his bowel, his CT scan showed a 2cm lesion in the lower left lung. He was told to follow up in 6 mos. Before my own bc diagnosis in Sept., we started planning for the contingency of his possibly having lung cancer (despite his being a doctor, he smokes). In Nov. he went for a re-scan....and the nodule was gone. But they found a tiny (2mm) one in the upper lobe, so he goes for another scan this May.

Hello all, I am probably not adding anything of value to this conversation, but here goes. My oncologist wants me to have a CT scan of the chest, but not because of my breast cancer. According to him, Medicare allows a CT scan for seniors with my smoking history (stopped smoking years ago) and he thinks it is a good idea to take a look now in case I have an early lung cancer that wouldn't have shown up on normal XRays that I have had. He says there really is no other reason to have the CT, no symptoms, etc. So now I am torn. I really don't want to look for trouble...I don't want to find an "incidentaloma" that may or may not be lung cancer or bc mets and then worry about it for the next years, possibly for no reason. I guess I am convinced that they will find "something" and I will have to get on the gerbil wheel.
I told my onc I want to think about it, but my 6 month check up is coming up soon and I know this will come up again. Sadly, I had put this out of my mind until I read this thread. Am I being foolish to keep putting this off? Your opinion is valued.

CJ, I think that you need to consider a new Doc. I wouldn't want to go to such a condescending a-hole myself

Actually, for a senior who smokes or has smoked, a baseline chest CT isn’t a bad idea. If a small nodule is discovered, you will probably be told to wait 6 mos. and scan again to see if it’s either grown, shrunk or disappeared. Only if it’s grown--or large to begin with--would you need a biopsy to see if it’s mets or a primary tumor.

Thanks Beatmon, I'm seeing my BS in March for check up and am asking for a new onc. I'm done with his attitude!! I had triple positive bc, stage IIIa. I know others with same diagnosis are watched much closer than I am and just want to be safe and proactive. I don't need a doc that judges how I'm doing based on the fact that I look soooo healthy!

Artista.
It is very nerve wracking! I have been told that the follow up for a lung nodule is 2 years weather you have had cancer or not.
I think also that they can change in their own if it is inflammation. The good news it that it's small and you only had one. My dr told me that if they found a whole bunch of them , it would be more worrisome.
Good luck to you and I hope your next scan goes well.

Welcome!
I know you are worried, it's hard not to be! I always found reading through all the posts on this website of all the people that had lung nodules that turned out to be nothing very reassuring!!

Cat scan showed one slightly enlarged lymph node and a few very small nodules. Pulmonary wanted to watch and rescan in 3 months. Based on history of BC I was not comfortable doing this. Went for 2nd opinion. Was able to biopsy lymph node which was positive for mets ( special procedure to get at it. Forgot the name) Oncologist states 99 percent chance nodules are BC also.
CJs, I agree. Look for new onc. No doctor should be speaking to you in that manner and makingyou feel to blame!

So, Monday is my 3 month CT scan. Even though I am pretty darned sure it's nothing, my nerves are starting to creep up on me. Hoping that saying this out loud makes it go away

So,
when I had thyroid issues, a 6mm nodule was found on my lung. It seemed completely unimportant to everyone involved-and I found out later this is because soooo many people have lung nodules. Anyway, I got to a pulmonolgist who explained that the protocol was a CT scan every 3 months for 2 years, then they declare it benign, even thought he thought it was benign from the start. I was concerned about all that radiation given that I have had breast radiation and radioactive iodine.. so we negotiated for every 6 months (which he was willing to do because he was certain it was nothing). So, at my 3rd scan for this a year ago, the nodule had disappeared…. lungs completely clear!
But I learned a lot in the process-most notably that really, loads and loads of people have lung nodules and in most cases, they are benign-but the protocol has to be followed, no matter your cancer history. He called it "incidentalitis". something that is found when they are looking for something else!!! It was nerve wracking and frankly more frightening than bc or thyroid cancer…. I was a wreck and boy did i celebrate when it disappeared.
But I also learned that there is a lot they can do if it turns up cancer (I made him tell me!). Like with bc,they have come along way with lung issues.
I wish you all peace of mind.

i know this is an old thread but reassuring to read now the ps found a 5mm nonspecific pulmonary nodule in left lower subpleural area. Rescan in future. Haven't smoked in 26 years quit when I was 25. No hx of pneumonia or lung illnesses. Nothing else in CT. Freaked me out. Still worried as some research says 50 percent cancer. Awaiting my BMX in two weeks
I wonder the actual percentage is. Is lung Mets usually a solitary lesion or multiple?

Try not to worry. Pre-chemo I had CT scan of chest and abdomen. Came back with a 6mm nodule in right lung. Of course, panic that it's mets. It's very common to have lung nodules. Just breathing the air that we do can cause it (pollution/allergens). I had a re-scan after chemo and it was still there so most likely not cancer or it would have gone away. Since it's so small and it's one, MO and I agreed no more scans. So highly unlikely it's cancer. This was last year and my lungs are fine.
And what research is that that says 50% of nodule(s) in lungs is cancer. That is so not true. The opposite is true. Majority of lung nodules are benign.

I just had my two year scans and have been freaking out because they found 2 nodukes in my right lung. One was 2mm and the other 3mm and the radiologist suggested I be scanned again in a year. I have been a basket case .

cdicapai - hope all is well. keep us posted.

just bumping this post as I was just told I have a 6mm hazy nodule to be watched. Hadn't been there before. Doctor isn't concerned and will recheck in 3 months. But I am a little impatient and freaking out! I finished radiation in the middle of August. How is everyone doing with their nodules found?

Hi Winters74- I had a chest xray to monitor latent TB and a shadow was seen. I just had my Chest CT and one 6mm pulmonary nodule was found in my left lower lobe and several sub-5mm ones in my right lower lobe. I had Stage 1 grade 3 breast cancer in my right breast. The radiologist recommended repeating the CT in 3-6 months.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer stage 3 her 2 + in May2015. I went through chemo, 35 rounds radiation and 1 yr Herceptin. It will be 2 yrs in June since I've had any treatment but has taken me so long to feel better and get my energy back all my Drs say it's normal, well last week I went in for my 3 mth check up and blood work and he ordered a bone and a c.t. scan. Well on the findings he put in the upper right lobe of the right lung a 0.8 cm rounded non calcified soft tissue density nodule is noted suggestive of a metastatic lesion.in addition 2 small less then 5mm faint ground glass type focal densities noted in the upper lobe of right lung and 2 small less then 5mm are noted upper left lung these are also suspicious but not diagnostic of metastatic lesions. But in the conclusion it says one metastatic lesion in the upper lobe of right lung, so I'm confused findings says suggestive of metastatic nodule conclusion says they found one metastatic nodule, all I know I'm a nervous wreck I go to my Dr this week just wondering if anyone has heard results like this. Thank you

It's all wording. Without a biopsy, they cannot know for sure what it is, so I would request one. Metastatic disease is only one of many possibilities.
