Canada Financial Advice please

I just got word back from my employee ability manager that I do not have enough hours to qualify for DIP through my union (I'm a nurse). I haven't even been back to work a full year since my mat leave ended in April 2015. Now I found out I am 95 hours short of having enough to get EI benefits as well. Does anyone have any advice for me? I just don't know what we are going to do. The surgeon does not want me to work throughout treatments because of my risk for exposure while being immunocompromised.

DIP means? 95 hours is two and a half weeks. It's not that long but EI isn't even close to what you would make on benefits. There must be some kind of compassionate leave available?

DIP is disability income plan or something like that. Unfortunately, in casual nursing, 95 hours is not just 2.5 weeks because I don't have a regular position, I can't work every day. Besides the fact that I will be having various appointments to freeze embryos etc. over the next couple weeks leaves it unlikely that I will be able to pick up enough shifts before I start chemo to make up those hours.

What chemo regimen are you taking? I know that I felt like crap the 3rd-6th day post chemo but then I was able to be up and about and work. HOWEVER, being a nurse may negate your ability to pick up shifts on week two or three post chemo treatment due to the exposure to virus and bacteria, and your body's lowered immunity system. Would your employer be able to squeeze you into a couple of shifts after your first chemo? The chemo treatment effects are cumulative. A lot of the ladies on here have been able to work for the first round or two before having to be off. That might be an option.

What about CPP? Long term disability insurance...?

thanks so much for the responses, this was definitely helpful and I have some good suggestions for my options. Everyone here is so helpful!

I have my first meeting with the oncologist on Tuesday and will hopefully get more of a game plan then. But the surgeon did tell me that she expects I won't be working for at least the year since I will be immunocompromised. Otherwise I would definitely pick up shifts
