how many have had doctors give opinions before biopsy results

I had an excellent radiologist, whom I will always be grateful for!
I have VERY dense breasts and many fibrodenomas. The screening mammogram didn't show anything, but because of my dense breasts and my mother having breast cancer at a young age, she wanted to be 100% certain that nothing was lurking.
She ordered an ultrasound and during the ultrasound, she spotted another fibrodenoma. She said that she was about 90% sure it was nothing to worry about, but her gut was telling her to make sure, so she scheduled a biopsy.
The biopsy was positive for cancer.
It was caught fairly early because of her! Had she gone with the results of the mammogram, which showed nothing, it would not have been detected until much later. I shudder to think how bad it could have been. -
thanks everyone needless to say we all have to be vigilant about our health but balance it with reason if possible (hypocondriasis) and dr google which of course never goes well for most
Even though they say bc is slow for most so days weeks months does not have a great effect on outcome when you talking delay for tests or surgery and treatment i think we all would also agree that for the patient every day matters so the faster the better. Have read tonnes of people who have had to wait on multiple tests because of lack of priority and care but also doctors and nurses that become like that due to work loads
-
Our Breast Center doesn't schedule ultrasounds without scheduling biopsies at the same time. That way, if a biopsy is warranted it happens right then and there is no waiting. When I had my ultrasound, the doctor said, "did the technician tell you what it looks like?" and I said, "No" and she said, "It definitely looks like cancer." Then she did the needle biopsy. It was actually nice to know and not have to wait. She called the next day with the confirmation.

Working day 8. Fna biopsy 5th feb. Approaching the 2 week mark. Guess wellington nz has a high work load and unsure why we have not heard from nurse but a pathologist i emailed said she would aim for 10 working days so it amazes me how fast everyone else gets results

Supportive - do not lump ALL types of BC together. It is SO sad when those, who should know better/know, do not understand that there are different types with different urgency for DX and TX. Most of the types of BC (DCIS/IDF/ILC) are not critical to be dealt with within hours/days but for some (IBC), time is critical.
There are those whose paths. need to be done ASAP (not only ALL BC) but labs do not need to be loaded down with non-critical paths. done 'immediately' - just to please 'someone' with no reason to think it's 'critical' immediately.

Overnight I had IBC symptoms. Got to OB/GYN who fast tracked my diagnostic mammo
The radiologist was present for my diagnostic mammo and US. He scheduled biopsy of 2 areas the next day. He told us from the beginning it was more likely than not IBC, with an IDC tumor as well. The pathology report later confirmed it .
I was in a chemo chair 14 days later. It was a push to get my port, lymph node biopsy and PET and CT scans I spent an entire week at the hospital coming every day for tests and meeting with MO and BS.
. It was treated like an emergency because IBC grows and changes over hours and days. (mine was changing every day)
The Breast Center made my surgeon and MO appointments the same day as I had my diagnostic mammo and US. They were sure it was IBC and they were right.
They did make it clear to me the reason everything was accelerated was because it was IBC. If not IBC they would not have done it that way. I apprteciated their direct approach letting me know that waiting for test results, appointments etc, would have been different if I had another type of BC.

i understand re ibc and i do not want to sound insensitive so i do apologise if i do... i guess when i hear people receiving idc ilc results within days and my cousin got her results within 3 days and it is now the 8th working day here and because of a bank holiday 2 weeks in total the wait is tough and still going
i do not feel like i am impatient given the time that has gone by plus it is a lump biopsied so is not a mammo or us
-
Supportive, all my testing, biopsies and surgeries have gone through a clinic associated with an extremely busy public county hospital. It took from the first of November until Mid April for me to go from screening mammogram to excisional biopsy, so no, everyone doesn't get instant appointments or pathology results. I had faith if they ever felt that anything was urgent I would have been fast tracked. Facts are, the vast majority of breast issues turn out benign, and of the ones that don't, even few of those are truly emergencies and many are not even truly urgent

i am just super anxious and i am sure you all understand what waiting without a timeframe is like

My mass did not show up at all on mammograms. At the ultrasound examination a radiology resident first looked, then brought in the senior radiologist who stated she was "concerned" and booked me for a biopsy the following day while I was still on the exam table. The radiology report said hypoechoic mass with irregular borders, BIRAD4. This gave me time to prepare mentally instead of giving me false hopes.

My radiologist both times after my US and core biopsy said it was "most likely" cancerous which sent me into tears.
My obgyn was a bit more hesitant calling it, my BS has been more optimistic (even with having to send out my excisional sample for a second opinion)
Now I have results back, with "findings are insufficient for a diagnosis of DCIS in this setting" and my BS nurse just left me a msg saying my results were up and the doctor wants to see me on Monday.
Now I get to stew in my very confusing and inconclusive results until then.
Bah

nothing worse then waiting i share your anxiety
Hardest thing is to not dwell and grip onto every word said and then search the internet for answers
As great as resources are and this forum included for support it also can serve very much as fuel for stress and fear from trying to compare scenarios. I am not saying people should not come and read stories or post. For me i have to try not draw any conclusions from all the information on the internet

I get my biopsy results this afternoon ...the biopsy was done on Feb 10th...the waiting game really feels like it is mentally cruel...all of this came about when the radiologist asked me in September if this area was done?... It was in my file from last year...and should have been biopsied at my initial dx. I am beyond angry and anxious.

This is all scary, I wanted to find a post like this though so I can be prepared for anything. I had a core biopsy done last Tuesday the 26th and still haven't got my results back. The Radiologist doing my first ultrasound said it was benign flat out, she said we can do a biopsy just to make 100% sure though because my mom was diagnosed young. The Radiologist doing my Biopsy when I came back said the tumor is oval and smooth and looks like A benign Fibroadenoma and he would be shocked if it was cancer. 9 days later still no report. My Dr office called yesterday and today to get it faxed over ASAP who knows what is going on maybe it isn't benign after all and more tests have been needed. :-(

Cindy, truly, sounds like not so much like it's cancer, but someone dropped the ball with getting the results to your Dr.
If anything, if it WAS positive for cancer, I would have expected you to find out much sooner. But someone got lazy/dropped the ball

My GP did not think my lump would be cancerous, but she said we take all breast lumps seriously regardless. She was quite surprised to find it was cancerous. The sonographer didn't think it looked suspicious, but didn't know what it would be, and nothing showed up in the mammogram. The radiologists report said 'recommend biopsy to rule out IDC'. (No BIRADS - maybe we don't have that in Aus).
Turned out it was a large ILC, which isn't exactly common in 35 year old women, and presents so much differently to IDC.
I'm glad I didn't have anyone tell me it was probably cancer, because the wait (3 weeks I think?) would have been much more difficult with that hanging over my head.

My diagnostic mammo, ultra sound and biopsy were all performed on the same afternoon at the same clinic. The specialists who viewed the images told me then and there they were certain it was cancer. My breast surgeon went as far as to say he was so certain that if the biopsy results come back negative he would re biopsy. Testing was done on a Wednesday afternoon and I was expecting the results Friday but got a call to say there had been a delay due to an equipment breakdown at the lab. Surgeon called back on Saturday with confirmation of Multi Focal ILC. I had absolutely no signs or symptoms and no family history.
-
My results finally came back, the hospital had faxed them to my OBGYN by mistake. It is a Benign Fibroadenoma!
-
So pleased for you, Cindy. That is pretty much what the radiologist thought based on what he saw, too.

ENJOY YOUR WEEKEND!!

BlueKoala,
Yes, if I am not mistaken the BIRADS rating is not something that is uniform across the world. The USA, and possibly Canada use it. Not sure about Europe.
-
Thank you Marie! Yes he was right! :-) Thank you for your support
-
Yes!! My surgeon refuses.to.biopsy because she says breast cacer isn't painful!
-
I was given a heads up immediately but only because I was only visiting in the US at the time and the doc didn't want me to go anywhere.
-
The radiologist who read my mammo and sono told me the calcifications in my left breast were "dangerous and scary looking," but the ones in my right were "normal and fine." LCIS in both and waiting (for the huge hematoma on the right to resolve) to schedule excisional biopsies on both. The doc who did the biopsy on the right was astounded it was not a fibroadenoma.
-
i had the opposite problem. My doctor kept telling me it was probably nothing, don't panic. Diagnostic mammogram, just cautiois, don't panic. Biopsy, yes we need it but don't panic. Finally when she called me on her last day in the office before her vacation and said come see her right away I said.."can I panic NOW". Ugh!

Hi everyone. I had a wonderful very compassionate and competent radiologist. She told me right out that the lump was very suspicious and that if the biopsy came back benign she would biopsy again or have me see a BS to have it it. Of course she was right. IMO sometimes they can be very sure and other times not. I don't think many docs would say very suspicious if they were not 99 percent sure. Good luck to all.....

Hi all, been lurking for awhile and finally built up the nerve to type something...LOL...so I found a huge (to me) lump about two weeks ago. Mom was diagnosed with BC at an early age (38 and I'm 41) and maternal grandmother and great-grandmother both died from cancer as well as paternal aunt diagnosed with BC 2yrs ago so because of that I made an appt. with my Gyno who also happens to be my primary. That was Weds of last week, at same time made a mammo appt. which they made but said bring referral at time of appt. So went to doc and he felt lump said he thought it to be Fibroadenoma but sent me to ultrasound and diag mammo anyway. He measured it at 5cm. Spoke of removal no matter what result as he felt it easy to remove. I had the tests on Friday of last weekand am waiting results. My only concern is that while it is mobile there is visible puckering in nipple area and the shape of my breast has changed. I have read where most people opt to wait and not do removal but upon looking around this site and other research I have seen where there has been cancer inside the Fibroadenoma tumor and biopsy has shown benign in all cases. I'm seriously leaning toward removal no matter what the results say just as Doc hinted. It may be best for my peace of mind and with my risk type for sure. Just wanted to add a different view as even though it's rare it's seems there can be cancerous tumors hidden within benign results. I'm definitely going to demand more seriousness based on this. I don't want to excite anyone but knowing this helped me. I will definitely keep everyone updated on my results. Just wanted to add my two cents any thoughts would be appreciated as I want to do the right thing
