dog walking after lumpectomy???

I think this might actually be my first post with a "practical" question, unlike my others which are generally "scared" posts.

My question is what is the recovery time after lumpectomy for DCIS? I have a 95 lb German Shepherd that I walk daily. She doesn't pull on the leash unless she sees another dog or pickup truck. Not sure how to manage that after surgery. I can hire a pet walker but am wondering how long I will need to do this?

I know everyone is different but just want a ball park idea so I can notify the pet sitter....

I was walking my dogs two days after my mx. I tied the leash around my waist in case they pulled too hard.

I waited a little longer to walk my girls (my husband and Aunt did it for a while) but did the same as farmerlucy and looped the leash around my waist. Those dogs knew to walk slow. So smart!

I was walking my dogs (Labs) a day or two later. The first day I was still a little yucky from a bad reaction to the anesthesia, but once that was better I was back to walking them - just used my other arm.

I was actually back to running a week later, although I had to wear two sports bras to get the level of “strapped in” I needed, LOL.

Tying her around my waist would probably be a disaster....She would probably pull me down! She is pretty dog reactive. If we don't see any other dogs we will be fine...she is not a puller. I happened to be dropping off some stuff at the surgeon's office this morning and asked....Reply was no restrictions. Just use other arm. But when she really gets "fresh", I usually use both arms to hold her.

What is the problem with using the arm on the "lumped" side? Weak? Pain? Will my boob fall off?(kidding) Wound opening?

I’m actually not sure what the problem would be if all you have is a lumpectomy ... I had a sentinel node biopsy as well and that does cut into the muscle a bit, so there would have been pain, weakness, and possibility of opening wound. I’m not sure that would necessarily apply to the breast incision though, especially if your girls were strapped in nice and tight (so no flapping around).

Definitely will need to strap them in....they tend to do a lot of flapping

I believe that walking my very large dog is what helped me recover after my mx. First of all, I lost 50 lbs and secondly, my RO could not believe that I had absolutely no stiffness or pain. I think that when she pulled on the leash, my muscles were exercised, stretched and strengthened. She was my therapy. But we do live in the country and if we run into deer, then I try to grab the leash with both hands right away. If the leash were around my waist, I would be running with the deer. Lol

Glad to hear dog walking shouldn't be a problem. At least not anymore than normal!
