Is anyone expecting a whizz bang episode tonight to play against the Super Bowl? Surely the writers knew the schedule for it when they wrote it and Season 6 started (yes?) on the same weekend as last year. Just postulating. Only know the teaser on my DirecTV listing which is not much.

Exbrnxgrl, beautiful collection. Especially like the different colored ones. Do you do anything special for care? I have my GM's (born 1902) purse. I think it is a Whiting and Davis. Locked in display cabinet or I would get up and look.

    luvmygoats,

I just keep them out of direct sunlight and dust them off. Mine are mostly Whiting and Davis. the shinier colored ones are Mandalian, a company that was eventually bought by Whiting and Davis. Glomesh was, and still is, an Australian company which made metal mesh purses as well. I was thrilled to find a vintage one when I was in Australia a few years ago. My two oldest, which were probably worn on chatelaines are of unknown origin. I know far too much about trivial stuff like this :)

I think the last episode is March 6. Just two weeks between episodes 8 and 9.

Point of information: Va-lay' is French, Val'-et is British.

I agree that Mary's suitors are all lookalikes. Cannot tell one from the other. I have no idea what she is doing with an automobile racing man. I'd think she'd run like heck. Of course, I'd never have imagined her plopped down in the pigpen either.

Mary is so absolutely self-contained, it seems she has no need for a husband. Perhaps a series of lovers?

Arghh - DH had to watch Super Bowl so I missed watching Downton Abbey last night. I need to get my fix tonight!! I love this series and hard to believe it's been on for 6 years. I do plan on purchasing the DVDs to go back to earlier shows. I missed some of them and now want to understand some the character backgrounds.

On the west coast, the game was over well before DA started, not that it would have prevented me from changing the channel since I only watched the last quarter anyway....I will wait for others to chime in before getting into specifics, but I will say that my impression was quite the opposite of a blow-out extravaganza to compete: to the contrary, it seemed to me that not that much happened. Most of the 'action' was highly predictable. So much so that I may have even dozed off for a minute or two (horrors). Was that just me?

Octogirl - I agree with your assessment. In fact I was not glued to the episode as usual. But on 2nd thought maybe the writers did a blow off episode since they knew they were competing. If I had not been sitting playing on my computer I might have dozed off.

Gee I thought it was pretty good. Mary as snotty as ever. Lady Grantham in a Tizzy and darned mad at her DIL Cora. No one knowing the history of the house. Horseradish on salmon. Robert doing the whole show in his pajamas. What was up with Barrows??

Don't forget, this all aired in the UK last year - nothing to do with the super bowl.

Although I don't find Thomas particularly likeable, my heart breaks for him when when I see how he tries to hide his pain. He tries to be so controlled and self contained, but he is in pain and broken inside.

Oh, poor Thomas. It's been building since the beginning of the series. I have a bad feeling about this.

My vote for character I'd most like to slap in this episode: Carson? Can't wait for Elsie to decide she's finally had it with her household Napoleon. Maybe she's rethinking the "obey" part of those vows? Or Daisy? Grow up, girl! Take that exam and then get a job, for pete's sake. Let Mrs. P. and Mr. M., both of whom love you like a daughter, have some happiness of their own!

Or Mary... Though it's SO much fun watching things build with Henry Talbot. Almost as much fun as watching her finally...almost...figure it out about Marigold. Coming soon....

I did enjoy this episode, mostly because Violet, Cora, and Isabel were so on point. Loved them all!

I was a little disappointed that Tom didn't fall for one of those women at the dinner in London.

Violet: has to be deposed, I guess. She simply can't be the powerful character in the end that she's been all the way through: the world is changing, and she can't.

    Can't wait for #7!

I was quite annoyed at Mrs Patmore for going to Carson to report on what she overheard from Thomas (that of course was misinterpreted). Hoping the story line doesn't turn out badly for Thomas but maybe I am overly optimistic....

oh, and Rain, I know that you want to see Tom matched up (as I do...well, actually I'd like to see Tom AND Thomas matched up though Thomas seems unlikely to find true love at this point)...anyway, I predict Tom meets his match at whatever the next event that the guys invited him to...he did say he'd go, right? (can't remember exactly what the event was: the next car race maybe?)

Octo: yes, I'm guessing that Tom (Branson) will meet someone soon who's in-between, like he is. The car race would be a perfect venue for this to happen. Predicting also that he and Henry will team up in some car-related business and make a killing.

The tragedy with Thomas (Barrow) is that he's boxed in and can't seem look for alternatives. He's only looking for butler positions, as the world is changing and there are fewer openings for servants. I keep thinking, why doesn't he go up to the hospital in York and apply for something there? Or ask Clarkson for help, since Clarkson knows his medical experience during the war, which should make him employable? But then Clarkson knows Barrow's secret, of course, so Thomas would never ask him for help. So he's trapped, and meanwhile Carson is enjoying twisting the knife.

Again, I'm trying to look at the characters from the perspective of the Edwardian era, not our own. Neither Mrs.Patmore nor Carson are trying to be cruel to Thomas, per se. Homosexuality was considered such a horrible and perverted abomination in those days that the way they deal with it was the societal norm. As for Carson, I don't believe he's mean, though he clearly doesn't like Thomas, rather he believes in the strictest of Edwardian morals, manners and class divisions with his whole heart and sees any loosening of these things as a threat to society and the order he so cherishes. He is beyond hidebound when it comes to tradition. Even Lord Grantham is willing to concede to the reality of the future, but Carson? Well, not much at all. Remember his opposition to the telephone?

Tom is cracking me up, playing Cupid for Mary and Henry. Yes, I think he may meet someone at the car race.

I think Thomas is being set up for something really big, either good or bad, I'm not sure yet, although that's probably for dramatic tension. His last scene of sobbing in front of the fireplace was heartbreaking.

I don't think it's fair that he's worked his way up from footman to under-butler, only to be shoved out the door. He has seniority over almost all of the staff, and he's a war veteran (however no one knows his injury was sort of self-inflicted). He has improved much along the way, although he still felt compelled to out Gwen the former housemaid.

All said, I am truly hoping for Thomas to find his place in the world. With his skills as butler, medic, and his love of children, maybe something can turn up. Thomas should speak with Isobel and/or Dr. Clarkson. I bet they could find a use for his talents!

I think Mrs Patmore was motivated to intervene because she was concerned for the young lad Andrew. Exbmxgrl you have it right - Carson is sooo bought in he won't even enjoy his "claret" if it is not in keeping with his master!

I think Mrs. Hughes will hit the wall soon - looking forward to it, he is unbearable.

Mominator I hope as you do that Barrows finds his way in the world - but although I pity him, it is too hard to admire him!

Am I the only one who is put off by the relationship between Mary and Edith. Two powerful, determined women with both influence and position and oh that's right they can't possibly support and honor each other -they are women of course! My teenage daughter totally disagrees with me on this so maybe I am off base.

Why couldn't Isobel give Violet a heads up about the hospital so she could save face. Further evidence, in my opinion, Isobel is a self righeous prig..

I am so happy to read everyones comments - thanks to all, and so sad the show will end.

Dismay, I think we're meant to be put off by the relationship between Mary and Edith. They're so mean! Though I've read the actresses are great friends in real life.

You know what struck me as odd? That moment when Lord Merton introduces his odious son's rather nice fianceé to Isabel. The woman implied that Larry Gray would no longer be making trouble for his father's marital prospects. Hmmm.

Drama is drama. I need to stop wondering if Julian Fellowes is sexist.... No good comes of it.

I also found the strange twist with Lord Merton and the fianceé to be odd and it seems too contrived.

Dismay, I am more than put off by the relationship between Mary and Edith, which is getting ridiculous. They're still sniping at each other after all they've both been through. Realizing that each has lost the love of their lives, plus the recent reminder of how good Sybil was, I don't see why they can't support one another? They are both powerful in their own way, Mary as the agent for the estate, Edith as the managing editor of the magazine. Both modern women in a changing world. Maybe Tom, in addition to his role as Cupid, can help them get along. He seems to want the best for everyone.

I think Isobel couldn't give Violet a heads up because it was not her decision to make. Isobel is well aware how rather low she is in the hierarchy. Cora and Doctor Clarkson together should have said something to Violet. Even Robert was in on the secret. No, I don't think Isobel should take the blame for this one.

Yes, rain, kay, and dismay, the lovely fiancée was just too contrived. I suspect we know how that's going to turn out. Well, I've been rooting for Isobel and Lord Merlton for a long time.

I'm looking forward to Mrs. Hughes' eventually telling Mr. Clarkson how things will be in THEIR house, as opposed to the big house. Also, Mrs. Patmore and Daisy seem to be poised for a stand-off over Mr. Mason. Mrs. Patmore will come out on top.

Lots of little stuff going on for the downstairs staff. I can see Mr. Moseley doing well in his exam and being hired as an assistant at the school. Andrew learning how to read, and working more on Mr. Mason's farm. Baxter getting closure with Coyle, with lots of support from Mosely. Maybe Daisy and Andrew will both work on the farm, though not with any romantic spark. I can see Mr. Mason helping them both improve their stations in life, again, not necessarily with them becoming a couple. I think Mason-Patmore have more of a chance of romance.

I'm still worried for Thomas. Maybe something will happen with the new merger in York. Isobel and Dr. Clarkson need to help him.

Is anyone else worried about Robert? He still keeps having pains. Is it just that he's recovering from rather primitive surgery (from our point of view) or is there another gastric event in his future?

I don't think Julian Fellowes is sexist as much as he is trying to reflect those times very accurately.

I don't think if Julian Fellowes was sexist that he would have 2 female producers on the show. This is how things were especially in Britain, I think it's pretty true to life.

I think all the tension between Mary & Edith is partly to do with Mary being the first born & take the "heir" to the estate role & Edith wanting to make her way in the world with Mary getting all the attention & able to do as she pleases. Edith until very recently was the mousey little sister, but she has finally found herself. I like it.

I hope they replay the entire series again after the finale. When we watched Breaking Bad from beginning to end, we found that there was a lot of subtleties that we missed the first time around. I think Downton would be the same.

    Hello ladies,

Every time I watch the episode, I notice a few more things. Although I wrote plenty above, I was touched by a scene with Mr. Mason and Daisy as they place William's photo up on the bookcase. Mr. Mason lost his wife and his son (only child). I hope good things continue to happen for him with his DIL Daisy. I'm also glad he's has the companionship, and maybe some romance, with Mrs. Patmore.

Any more comments about Episode 6 and/or predictions for Episode 7?

That moment with William's picture was very sweet--I remember it now.

The romance is palpable--all those new relationships, first kisses. Does anyone want to predict if Baxter and Mosely will move things forward, or is she going to self-sabotage and go visit the guy in prison? Will Mosely become the new assistant schoolmaster?

I wish I didn't think they were going to kill off one or two of the major characters. But I think they will.

I'm new to this thread, but just have to jump in!

I really hope Baxter doesn't go visit the guy in prison, but I predict she will. Maybe, though, it will help her close that chapter. I do think Mosely will find a new career for himself at the school - would be a nice resolution for that character.

Seeing Barrow so distraught at the end of the last episode makes me think it will not end well for him. I also have a bad feeling about the upcoming car races, but not sure for whom.

It would be nice to see Ladies Mary and Edith bury the hatchet before the end of the show, but somehow I doubt it. I have been wishing for Lady Edith to find happiness ever since she was left at the alter several seasons ago, so I'm hoping for a happily-ever-after with Bertie, Edith, and Marigold. This may be too much to ask for!

Is everyone ready to comment on Episode 7? I won't say anything spoiler-y until others chime in as well.

I will say: I loved the scene between Violet and Miss Cruikshank. Violet made Miss C reveal her true colors, and then put her in her place: "You are a cool little miss, aren't you? I'd feel sorry for Larry if I didn't dislike him so much."

Also, Thomas Barrow is just heading down and down this season, isn't he? To me it seemed like in every scene people were just shutting him out. I think he's being set up for something really awful.

I just do not understand why Barrow is seeking a position out there in the sticks. There must be posts (and hope of a better social life) in London (even Buckingham Palace).

Mominator, I also enjoyed the heck out of that interaction. I did find the not-yet-married gold digger a bit careless in showing her claws before the ring is on the finger. Wonder if it will come back to haunt her?
