Diagnosed with DCIS but now LCIS?

Hi everyone,

My mom had a biopsy done in December 2015 which showed DCIS. She had a lumpectomy and we went for her pre-op. The surgeon said she had great margins and it was never DCIS but LCIS! He said the pathologist had a difficult time reading it but figured out it was LCIS. He said she is cured and has nothing more to do with her breast cancer journey. He said she doesn't need to do radiation since it reported LCIS. He said this does happen sometimes but not common.

My question is, has this happened to anyone? My mom wants to get a 2nd opinion, would you recommend it?

That is really good news for your mom BUT given the confusion I absolutely would get a second opinion on the pathology. Johns Hopkins does them and it is a very easy process. Just check their website. Good luck!

I agree with a second opinion on the pathology. Generally staining for e-cadherin would have identified LCIS vs. DCIS at the beginning

the surgeon said the pathologist had the hardest time trying to figure out if it was DCIS or LCIS! I thought they would know from the biopsy. Is this common that it was misdiagnosed after the surgery
