hi, BlueHeron. I am sort of confused...is radiation recommended for DCIS with or without invasive component even when you have had a mastectomy? No one has raised this possibility with me (I did not have DCIS, just IDC). I thought radiation was only used in combination with lumpectomy or with positive nodes. Thanks

Kessa, it is only on the table for me because of my very close margin. My IDC had plenty of margin. But I had DCIS <1mm from the superior skin margin of the Mx. Make sense? IDC with close or positive margin after Mx is an indication for rads. With DCIS it's less clear.

Oh, I see. Sorry I missed that. I hope you get some resolution soon and can feel confident it is the right decision for you.

BlueHeron, you are doing all the right things. You are asking all the right questions. Give yourself credit for being brave enough to pursue your concerns until you are satisfied with the answers,

Since my DCIS disappeared apparently leaving no signs of the malignant cells that were clearly at the edge of the tissue sample from the first lumpectomy, I now have to make the hard decision about the potential use of AI drugs. It is not a simple decision due to various health concerns. There is no evidence to support radiation treatment! Yay, but where did those cells go, lol? The breast reduction confers as much protection as Tamoxifen because the more tissue removed the lower the risk of breast cancer. Still, the doctors are still pushing for more protection.

One day at a time. Deep breaths. Chocolate cake. Oh, did I say that? Yes, I just celebrated with a wonderful slice of flourless chocolate cake with raspberry sauce preceded by a very healthy vegetable plate and Pellegrino.

My mother who has Stage IV cancer is in the ER tonight with an apparent lung infection. I am 225 miles away from home, but my brother is there with her.

I have DCIS but I will not require radiation. I pushed hard against radiation, and I won the battle, though it is not exactly clear why I ended up with a completely negative path report that reviewed a massive tissue sample and found no sign of malignancy. For DCIS, it used to be one size fits all, radiation after lumpectomy or mastectomy. The standard of care is slowly changing to treatment that is right for the specific woman.

DecisionFreak, all my best wishes for your mother. It's tough to not be there.

BlueHeron, sometimes it helps to flip a coin. Not that you have to do what the coin says, but sometimes it will reveal your feeling about each potential choice. Like, if the coin says don't do rads, you might feel unsettled and you will realize you actually want to do the rads. Or vice versa.

Grandma3x, keep getting those steps. They are so good for us. Maybe you should go to the mall more often!

Mominator, glad to see you walk so much. My friends said I should take a few weeks off work after surgery, but I said I would be far more sedentary at my desk than at home. The only place I ever sit down is at the computer.

I had my first Physical therapy this morning. The therapist went through about 10 exercises that I can do to gain back ROM. I go 3 times a week for up to 10 weeks or until I'm back to "normal".

I then spent a couple of hours researching effects of radiation after mastectomy. I was still feeling a bit anxious about the cancer coming back if I don't have rads, but I can now see the RO's point - that any gains might be overshadowed by the risks, so I think I'm ok with not having the radiation. Plus if I do have a recurrence, I can still have rads, whereas I would not be able to if I have it done now. BlueHeron - I hope that when you get a second opinion, the doctor will go aver everything with you. I think I was somewhat put off by the RO when she lumped all cancers together to give me a 10% chance of recurrence. I would have preferred a more individualized assessment based on the histology, size, grade, etc.

Moondust - I'm not going to the mall today, but I am going to try for 2 miles on the treadmill today. Can't wait for spring so I can start walking more outside (too much slush, snow and wind today!)

Grandma3x & DecisionFreak - happy dance for you both - awesomely encouraging news. My new hobby is making BS crazy. Called and called until I got her on the phone to ask if the MX date could be brought forward. Of course it can't, but the dialogue raised another option in my mind - go for a 3rd re-excision to try and clear the margins. If successful, then RT and I'm done and can avoid the MX. If not, then go ahead with the MX on March 24th. If they won't hold the surgery date until the path report comes in, then I will go for the MX on the 24th. Either way, I feel better, like I'm once again the captain of my ship..or the illusion thereof. In any case, never underestimate the power of the grape!

Update - I am in shock - BS office just called and agreed to hold the March 24 MX date for me while they do a re-excision on Feb 11. Wow - I feel like I just won a 10 round boxing match. We ARE Warriors. :)

    Great news, Stellamaris!

Grandma3X, do you listen you anything while you walk? I subscribed to Audible and listen to great books that I'd never have time to read otherwise.

StellaMaris - that is great news! I know you must feel relieved!

Moondust - I have Amazon Prime and have been watching reruns of Falling Skies (I never saw the first 2 seasons when it first came out). I have tried reading while on the treadmill (walking, not running) but find it difficult. I'll have to try Audible - thank you for the suggestion! So far today I've got over 7,000 steps :)

stellamaris, great idea on the re-excision. I wish I had known what I know sooner. I took Tamoxifen for three weeks in between my first and second lumpectomies. I was supposed to take it for two months in hopes it would shrink the tumor. I keep wondering if the Tamoxifen in those three weeks shrunk the tumor and then if my immune system got rolling and swept the malignant cells away since there was no trace of cancer in my path report. I wish you had more time to see of tamoxifen might shrink your tumor enough to get clear margins. Ask your surgeon if she or he is willing to do a cavity shave after the re-excision. I think the data is mixed on CS but it can't hurt I don't think. It involves the surgeon going in after the lumpectomy and shaving a wide margin around the tumor bed. I don't know if CS procedures are done only for specific kinds of cancer or if they can be done after lumpectomy for any kind of cancer.

DecisionFreak - thanks for the tip about the cavity shave. I will ask. This lumpectomy is a pure roll of the dice (2nd attempt to clear the margins). But I feel I can't lose - if it doesn't work I have the MX/DIEP to fall back on, and if it does, I will have time after the RT to assess what recon should look like. It could be as simple as a reduction of the left breast. I have been on Letrozole since Dec so with any luck that will improve the re-excision chances. Fingers crossed :)

P.S. I have found that movie therapy is great! Lol, I was accused of trying to hijack a thread when I added quite a few posts on movies, directors, actors, and genres that I find interesting, so I won't talk about movies here except to say that movie therapy works to get my mind off of things that are bothering me! Somebody mentioned music therapy, so I am going to get my sound system set up again because I love music. I need Get a Life Therapy. Maybe now that I am not dragging my body behind these boobs in serious pain, that will happen.

My mom has bronchitis, not pneumonia as a misguided doctor or assistant told my brother last night. I am going home tomorrow. 225 miles and I will be back in the country right down the road from the cow pasture.

SVGsurvive, thank you for your kind words! I'm just now catching up on all the posts.

Because of the hematoma, I now get to pack the wound with gauze. Hey, I can do that! Beats what used to be there!

I got my full pathology report FINALLY. IDC, localized to one spot. Nothing in the sentinel node. Also nothing in the 1.3 and 1.1 pounds of tissue they took for the reduction. I am truly blessed!

Hi, everyone, I probably have posts to catch up on. I am not a superachiver on this thread but I try to chime in,

Grandma3X, I wrote a long post agreeing with you about the problem with lumping cancers with different characteristics together to come up with a recurrence rate. From what I can see, I must have lost that post. I also addressed some of BlueHeron's concerns. It is very frustrating to lose posts. Maybe now I can follow up on the nearly new Dell computer that crashed.

The plastic surgeon took out the drains yesterday. I took a shower with strong surgical grade soap. I had to stand with my back to the shower so it didn't beat on these fragile sutures. The PS wanted to see me next week but I told her I couldn't make the long trip again that soon. She made me promise her I would come back to the clinic right away if anything goes wrong.

I was fitted with a Jobst surgical vest size 5 after surgery last week. I bought two bras to wear when I am washing this one. I told the PS that the other bras are not comfortable. She wrote me a prescription for a surgical bra when I know she meant vest. Medicare turns down all kinds of medical equipment requests if they are not written properly. Has anyone dealt with the issue of Medicare payment for a surgical vest? This sounds simple, but Medicare hires outside auditors to turn down claims based on technicalities. My congresswoman is investigating this problem. Medicare gives bonuses for each claim the auditors find grounds for rejecting the orders written by the doctors.

I love all the posts about walking, reading, and watching movies! I really miss my treadmill and can't wait to get rid of these drains and get back to it! I would typically walk at least a mile 5-6 days a week! I have a lot of discomfort with my remaining 2 drains and can see and palpate both. Hoping they both get removed on Tuesday!

DecisionFreak: Glad to hear you got your drains pulled even though I'm a little jealous! =)

logang, I wrote a post in response to yours. It disappeared! I am tired now and have to rest. I will return.

I am very confused about why my post disappeared. Maybe I made the gods angry. I wonder if I was censored. Hope not. Open communication is a major factor in a satisfying life. I've seem some posts that were quite bizarre that were not censored so it is highly doubtful that anyone on BCO made my post vanish.

logang and everybody, I do have thoughts I want to share as soon as I get some energy.

The PS had the drains attached inside with one stitch. She removed them with no pain to me. The PS is so sweet.

I hope your posts aren't being deleted! I look forward to hearing from you! I would describe my drain removal last week as internal rope burn, but once it was out, I had no lingering pain. I'm sure some of it has to do with how we are built to. I carry my extra weight in my hips, butt, and thighs. I have been able to feel the ends of the drains and the tubing over my rib cage from the beginning and constantly feel the pressure and pull which drives me insane!

Just checking in.... I'm glad most of you are doing well. Those of you that are having some issues, don't get down on yourselves. I went through most of what all of you are going through now when I had my BMX in September. It does get better!! I am two weeks out now from having my right expander replaced. I still have my drain and am hoping to have it taken out on Tuesday. It is still draining 50cc a day. 😫😫

Edited to add some more stuff and fix some errors.

aw, Logang, I wonder if it is the type of surgery, location of the drains, and sensitivity of the surgeon. My two drains were held by one stitch barely inside little openings at the base of my breasts where the long incisions from the aereoles extend almost to my chest. My PS strikes me as someone who despite her relative youth that learns and masters the best techniques available with careful attention to the patient as a living, breathing human being. She seems to work with great economy and grace combined with impressive knowledge and skills. She laughs all the time, too.

I just don't know why I have lost quite a few posts. Maybe chance.

Off topic, there was a man on the bus who talked nearly non-stop for 225 miles. The bus driver asked the man every 10 or 15 minutes to stop talking on his cell phone. The running commentary had some themes, parental drug abuse of heroin and crack cocaine, controlling wife who rejected him for another man, apparent problems seeing children, sex - maybe prostitution, not sure- , urgent need to give mother the money to get off her bus and join him. Finally, a woman on the other side of the very small Greyhound Bus started moving her lips, mouthing a soundless message to me indicating that the man was not talking on a cell phone. The woman quietly suggested that I should turn around and look for myself. Indeed, the man had been engaging nearly non-stop in a monologue. Just when I turned around, the man pointed out the window and said that his wife was in a car across the street with another man. I realized the speaker was delusional, paranoid, and hallucinating. I moved up to the front of the bus and quietly told the driver that the man was not talking on a cell phone. I said I would get on the phone and call the police as the man was a danger to all of us because he was distracting the driver. I talked to police in several jurisdictions, then the bus driver saw a state patrol car and pulled into a Citgo station. The state patrol officer called a local policeman, and the ranting, raving man quietly exited the bus and calmly waited to see what life held in store next. No moral to the story or maybe there is one. I have traveled 1350 miles in three weeks through the rural South to get great cancer care. Going the distance is often difficult. Like this man, I am exiting the stage and waiting for the next act. Unlike him, I am lying on the couch forced to do nearly nothing, but I just got a surprise today! I will have to shop for workout clothes and new nightgowns for my Mom, I think, because the hospital case worker recommended another stay at a demanding rehab facility, the second since last June. The rehab hospital is a cross between a day spa and a house of torture with three hours of exercise a day for 12 days.

BTW, my doctor took some fat tissue from one place in my right breast and moved it to fill in a big space in the same breast where the cancer surgeon must have done a major excavation. I wish they would find some diamonds and emeralds and rubies while they are digging. It is good that I was out cold under general anasthesia.I would have flipped out at the idea of having any flap surgery. It looks as if the technique worked. There is a lump there I mentioned in an earlier post but PS says it will all smooth out. Sort of like a cake in the oven, maybe?

    Going to sleep now.

DecisionFreak, too bizarre about the crazy man on the bus! I'm sure everyone was glad you talked to the driver. If you have Notepad, you can type your post into it, then copy and paste into here. That way you'll still have your post if it doesn't show up. I've had to do that on several sites.

Grandma3X, I love hearing about your steps!! I firmly believe that consistent moderate exercise is one of the absolute best things we can do for ourselves. It reduces overall inflammation, has many other positive health effects, and helps with weight control. And because walking is weight-bearing, it helps keep bone density.

Logang, hope your drains will come out on Tuesday and you can re-join the walking club!

Stellamaris, I'm glad they gave you a new option. I'll be hoping the best for you.

Merymete, good to hear the great news!

Yesterday I did my first longer hike since surgery. It felt good to walk up a few hills! My right arm feels a tiny bit sore and tired, but not bad. I'll take it easy today and tomorrow except for my daily steps.

Moondust - I logged about 9,500 steps yesterday. I took my dog for a walk - I think he was in shock, it's been so long! We have an invisible fence and he will not under any circumstances cross the line. So I have to put him in my car and drive to end of my driveway to get him to go for a walk - my neighbors think I'm crazy, LOL.

We went out for dinner last night and then to the movies to see The Big Short. It was pretty good, nice to get out. I'm going back to work part time tomorrow. My office is still packed up and they are not moving offices until next week, so I'll have to lug my laptop in.

DecisionFreak - I have also had all or parts of my posts disappear. Seems to happen when I post from my iPad or iPhone, not from my PC.

Have a good evening, everyone! I have been instructed to root for Denver in the Super Bowl, but mostly watching for the commercials and half-time show :)

DecisionFreak: you may be losing your posts because your computer might refresh the page while you are editing. That happened to me a few times before I figured it out. If your posts are going to be long, you can write your posts in Word or Notepad and save periodically. If you don't want to use another program, then select all and copy while you're writing your posts. Then if your computer refreshes, you still have most of your post (although much less reliable).

Another work-around is to submit your post, and then go back and edit it. At least the main part of the text doesn't get lost.

I've also noticed that there's a bug in the editing program if one pastes some text and then hits a key, the text erases. My fix for that is to hit one of the arrow keys rather than a text key. If I do get caught by that bug, immediately hit Control-Z to undo, and my text comes back.

In fact, I'm going over to the technical thread to report that bug.

    Mominator.

Glad to read some good news from many the past few days.

I have had similar issues with posts from phone not from desktop as others have mentioned.

Finding it hard to find a bra/forms to wear a month after BMX.

Got an ABC Leisure Bra & the light forms (not silicone) on Friday and after a few hours felt like I had 50 pound weights on my chest. Had no idea how heavy the lightest forms are until I took the bra off with forms in them.

I think I will stick with the $9.98 (as seen on TV) Genie bras sold at Walmart recommended on the Going F;at forum. The pads in these weigh like nothing but of course do not even seem like an A cup but are at least comfortable. I have had to size up 2 sizes in these though. Time will need to pass before I am even close to ready for silicone forms.

I think I have found a new MO - at least got a name recommended by a few people locally and will call this week.

I am starting back to work tomorrow part-time and will see how I do. I am kind of scared.

Had our best friends over earlier for Super Bowl but they left after half-time.

    Will stay in touch all.

    Stay well!

Hi, everybody, since it appears at least some of us want to keep this thread alive, does anyone have a problem with going off topic? I (really) enjoy reading about how all of you are coping post surgery. It made me smile to hear about Grandma3X and her dog being afraid to go across the border! There are dedicated threads for many topics we might cover here, but it is not the same as hearing about and from those on this thread who have shared their journey with each other. I was trashed on another thread for going off topic, though I think that has to do with an off thread issue. I left that thread quietly.

The moderators and me decided to take down my entertainment thread so I could rebuild it. After that happened, I decided not to re-create the thread because the moderators did not take down a religious slur aimed at me. It didn't seem worth it to run a busy thread as a volunteer for BCO under those circumstances. The entertainment thread was going great guns after a few days, and it was going to be a big job to run it after I rebuilt it. I enjoy writing about the movies and all sorts of topics. I am stuck at home unable to do much until these breasts heal. So, time is hanging heavy, and I can dash off some posts on various topics, including movies that I have watched, both new and old. If anyone objects, let me know.

My 85 year old mother, who has Stage IV cancer, is still in the hospital. The most recent diagnosis is bronchitis, but the doctor said yesterday she has fluid and scarring on her lungs. The hospital is talking about bringing in a lung expert. The hospital doesn't dare let her come home still sick because Medicare levies a huge fine now if a hospital sends a patient home before he or she is well and that patient has to be hospitalized again within 30 days.

Sure, I'd love to hear how everyone is doing as well! And I'd love to know people's fav movies etc. I'm not a big TV or movie watcher, but during my recovery watched the entirety of Broadchurch and Orange is the New Black on Netflix and loved both.

I'm heading to a second opinion from another RO tomorrow, hoping his perspective will help me with this impossible decision. And I'm seeing an OT on Thursday who specializes in mastectomy, scar mobility and lymph flow. I have a small pocket of swelling (seroma? Lymph?) in the front of my armpit that is not resolving and I want to do everything I can to help it get moving and avoid chronic issues or lymphedema. And having scar tightness and pain, especially where the drain was. I'm really looking forward to getting her help.

I still occasionally break down and take a Tramadol and I'm trying not to feel bad about that. As far as my scar and no recon, I find that showing my friends my scar helps me cuz they all ooh and ah and tell me how awesome and cool it is :). I have great friends.

@blueheron - who are you getting your recommendations for OT? I think I need as well and my BS surgeon has been of little to no assistance although I am making call about 2nd opinion MO today.

@decisionfreak - nothing personally, but generally speaking, I'd prefer to keep this forum on topic and to our post-surgical issues and recovery. There are a lot of forums already on this site about entertainment, jokes, cooking, exercise, etc and as many of us start returning to life and work, I find it will be harder to find time to read and wrote on here and those are not primary needs for me. Just my opinion.

    Thanks,
