multifocal?

Hi ladies,

I have my pathology report and understand everything on it except one part.

It says 'Tumor is multifocal within the tissue fragments in specimen 2'

This is stated in parenthesis after the size which says at least .7cm

Can anyone shed some light on the meaning of that? I thought I had asked all the questions but missed this somehow.

Thanks in advance-

Smiles,

Sara

Multifocal means there is more than one tumor. There is some information here on the sight.

    Sara,

As corgi mentioned, according to the main Breastcancer.org site's page on Non-Invasive or Invasive Breast Cancer:

"If there is more than one tumor in the breast, the breast cancer is described as either multifocal or multicentric. In multifocal breast cancer, all of the tumors arise from the original tumor, and they are usually in the same section of the breast. If the cancer is multicentric, it means that all of the tumors formed separately, and they are often in different areas of the breast."

    We hope this helps!
