Marijuana Kills Cancer Cells... Updated NCI fact page

I've definitely read it before more than once. I don't have time to fully research it because it doesn't apply to me, but since I'm the one who brought it up I did do a quick search. This is what I found on a site that makes CBD oil and ships it to all 50 states (looks like there are many others making the same claim).
http://purehempbotanicals.com/hemp-faq/
Can I legally purchase CBD online?
"Yes, CBD is legal to purchase online and legal to ship across the United States. The confusion around this topic exists because of the current laws in the U.S. regarding the growth of hemp. Our hemp is legally grown and processed in Colorado. CBD comes from hemp oil. Processed hemp (like hemp oil, hemp paper, hemp cloth, etc.) is legal in all 50 states. It is not, however, legal to grow hemp in most states. While states cannot ship hemp plants across state lines, legal growers can sell and ship processed hemp (like CBD oil) anywhere in the country."
Looking around, there seems to be quite a bit of controversy and conflicting info out there, so as always everyone should do their own research.

Wow--had no idea that weed itself is estrogenic. I have a different quandary, though. The IL MM app has a bazillion disclaimers on it--including that the patient must acknowledge that MM possession is a Federal felony and that (s)he holds the State of IL harmless in case of arrest by Feds (or erroneous arrest by IL police not familiar with MM statutes). And by acknowledging that I know MM is still illegal under Fed. law, I may be setting myself up for disbarment (though I’m retired, I still keep my law license active) and ineligibility for a Global Entry air travel card because I am declaring my intention to (and would soon and inevitably) commit a Federal felony!!!!!
Has anyone here suffered any adverse legal consequences as a result of holding a duly-issued MM card and using MM? “Law Clerk Google” seems silent on the issue.
-
ChiSandy - this isn't exactly the same as your situation but I do have a story about how legal isn't always considered legal. Someone I know who has a MM card in California traveled to Las Vegas, and got pulled over for speeding. I don't know why but the police asked to look in the trunk, and found a couple of prescription vials of MM. One of the officers was going to let them go because it was legally prescribed and MM is also legal in Nevada, but the other cop wanted to be a jerk (I guess because he could), and said, "Your prescription doesn't apply here," and wrote the ticket anyway. It wasn't difficult to get it thrown out of court but it cost her $2000 to hire a lawyer to do it, and she had to do online substance abuse education. Luckily nothing went on her record. So if you're traveling between states it's a good idea to find out if the state you are going to recognizes out of state licenses. Or just hide it better than she did LOL

A lot of people say marijuana is dangerous for ER+ breast cancer (specifically the THC) because it is estrogenic, but there is actually evidence that the opposite is true.
Δ(9)-Tetrahydrocannabinol disrupts estrogen-signaling through up-regulation of estrogen receptor β (ERβ).
Takeda S, et al. Chem Res Toxicol. 2013.Abstract
Δ(9)-Tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ(9)-THC) has been reported as possessing antiestrogenic activity, although the mechanisms underlying these effects are poorly delineated. In this study, we used the estrogen receptor α (ERα)-positive human breast cancer cell line, MCF-7, as an experimental model and showed that Δ(9)-THC exposures markedly suppresses 17β-estradiol (E2)- induced MCF-7 cell proliferation. We demonstrate that these effects result from Δ(9)-THC's ability to inhibit E2-liganded ERα activation. Mechanistically, the data obtained from biochemical analyses revealed that (i) Δ(9)-THC up-regulates ERβ, a repressor of ERα, inhibiting the expression of E2/ERα-regulated genes that promote cell growth and that (ii) Δ(9)-THC induction of ERβ modulates E2/ERα signaling in the absence of direct interaction with the E2 ligand binding site. Therefore, the data presented support the concept that Δ(9)-THC's antiestrogenic activities are mediated by the ERβ disruption of E2/ERα signaling.

Leslie where did you hear that MJ is estrogenic? Would interest me to know.
Marijen depends of course how you take it. Edibles take about 45 minutes smoking instantaneous.
-
Deanna, that cartoon....so funny, and so true at the same time!
-
ChiSandy, I had to sign all of that here in CT acknowledging that it is a federal offense. I don't travel with it or use it in public places just to stay under the radar (even though it is legal here)!

Honestly, I don't know if THC produces helpful or harmful effects on Estrogen. It's easy to find research for either argument. Man boobs i always thought, were an obvious reason to believe it was Estrogenic. So are many things in our diet.
Bottom line is I don't want to be high or have inhalation damage. I have small amounts of lung damage, likely from being a heavy user when young. So I want a high CBD/THC ratio. We all have to do our own research and do what is comfortable.
BTW, my sis brought me a CBD candy bar, and I tried some Monday. Worst pain day since last surgery. Was it the candy or major overactivity the day before? I don't know. I've tried bud a few times over the last 5 years, and it knocked me out and amplified my pain. It could just be me, like people with paradoxical pain med reactions. I'll try CBD's again, just to test results.
I always say we each have to make our decisions on our unique circumstances. There's research that supports any viewpoint you take.
-
Hello, I have been reading that CBD/THC was not good for women with ER+ cancer. Can you tell me how much you take?
-
Hi Ladies
well after reading and reading about CBD oil, I bought some today. Apparently, yes, you can buy it legally here in PA. The girl at the store told me to just drop a few drops under the tongue. Sort of a little edgy to use it as I am doing chemo. Anyone else on chemo that is taking it.?
Wendy is that how you take you CBD? Under the tongue?
Thanks
Rosieo
-
Rosieo hello I sometimes use the tincture but mostly I have been using the capsules. Both are good I think. Yes I just read that CBD products are legal in all fifty states. It's the THC that is difficult to get without a medical card. I have been pretty quiet lately waiting to see what my next scan on Friday says. That's were the proof either for or against will come out. As far as chemo I've heard that it will help with that. But I'm sure something can be found on the Internet to state the opposite. Also oncologists aren't keen on us taking anything else even multivitamins while in their care at least that has been my experience.
-
Since I live in OR, and more than qualify (as we all do) for med mj card, I might as well come out of the closet. After much independent researching, I came to the conclusion that using high CBD/low THC mj may really help.
My local cannibis atore directed me towards a strain called "Frank's Gift" a strain developed by a grower for his friend with cancer.
I can only buy leaf legally w/o an MJ card. So I purchased $10 worth. Did smoke it in small amounts. It barely had a high. Plesant buzz is more like it. And it helped me with pain. The CBD's in this pot are about 17% and THC 5%.
It's 4 days and I still have some left. I just had my Hip Replacement cancelled, from Cellulitis in my ear. I thought 3 months after my first surgery was too soon. I got it b/f trying mj. But I'm coping with a fair amount of pain with bad hip and other problems, so anything that helps is good.
As I always say: I did my research and made my choice. Everyone has to make their own choices.
And Wendy, I'm waiting for your results with bated breath. I'm really hoping you're on to something. Also that the cancer is going away and giving you more time.

Here's some very good information from SCLabs. In fact, their entire website might be worth checking out if you are thinking about trying MM.

Thank you Deanna, you always find the best links
-
wow!! that's wonderful suersis!
-
sueris, where did you see that? (I'm also in the CV.) Let me know if you check into it. I haven't done MM yet -- prefer not to right now until I see how my newest regimen is working -- but certainly interested and keeping it open as an option.
-
Suersis , wow that's super it's pretty pricey so that's a major break. Deanna the articles were very interesting there is so much out there and a lot of it is garbage so we need to sift through it. So glad you are interested.
-
Well count me as very interested. I plan to follow along here and when I find the time I may start the process of obtaining a card. I have a couple of friends who use MM and seem very informed who can probably help as well. I am along the same lines as Deanna where I am open to the idea but will bide my time until it seems to be the thing to do for me. Good research on everyone's part! I learned a lot as usual. Wendy, I hope your results are profound!
-
Suersis,
I'm curious about CA rules. Do you need a MM card? I love to vacation down in the Palm Springs area as it's so close by plane, and I love the desert. But don't like carrying on the plane if I didn't have a card. I'm not sure about applying yet
-
I didn't want to see this topic die, as medical MJ can be very helpful for some people.
I'm excited because I met with a new Pain Management provider and he asked me about using MM before I brought it up. I'm keeping this Dr! The trick is getting a high enough dose of CBDs, which is impossible by smoking. He recommended oil or capsules. I even get a bonus - his brother is a gynecology oncologist, which means he deals with a lot of breast cancer and is into alternative treatments. He's arranging a consult for me.
I plan to ask many questions about MM and other treatment's he's found successful. This is great news for me, as I've had a very sucky 2 months with medical providers, and honestly have been fighting to receive the right care all along. I'll share what I find out, and do more searching for research studies, so we know what's been shown to work. I hope there's more of you who want to join in and let others know what you find.
It would be nice to have Wendy with us, but she didn't receive the results she wanted and maybe doesn't want to talk about it. Hopefully she's getting the support and care she needs I don't know what or how she was using MJ; my Dr just said it's impossible to get enough through smoking, and you must use highly concentrated CBD with lower THC at a 4:1 ratio, or perhaps lower on the THC if that much is incompacitating. I still can't believe a mainstream provider told me I should be using MJ. This has been a good day!
-
HI Leslie I'm still around. I don't smoke for the CBD I take capsules maybe not enough. Each capsule contains 17 mg I take four a day . Still waiting for my results from the bone scan to really know what's going on. So not giving in yet or ever lol. I'm so glad you found someone who believes in this. I need to find someone who can tell me how much we need to be taking exactly.. Not so easy the dispensary folks don't know at least here in Canada . Most likely as with everything else cancer related we may need to bombard our bodies with the stuff. We won't let this thread die Leslie even if you look at the pain management side of things it still viable. Hugs
Wendy

Leslie and Wendy
I will hope that this thread does not die. I will certainly post. I have no experience with marijuana, but I have done a lot of reading and even, just last week, bought some CBD oil. The person at the store where I bought it said that the way to use it is to put a dropper under the tongue.
I have not used it yet. Still not sure. Wish more Dr's would give us some advise. I am taking chemo so my main question is "Would it be alright to take it as suggested while taking chemo" Very glad to see this thread. Would like to know more and will certainly keep up with whatever you can bring us.
Thanks Rosieo

I'm counting on better answers when I have the Oncology consult. My Pain Management dr said his brother wouldn't want to be treated for cancer in the US - he'd go to Germany. There's too much profit motive here.
I'll try to get better answers about amounts to use. Taking the right amount as soon as possible is very important to me. My Aunt, who had breast cancer 10 years ago has had a widespread recurrence to her ovary and uterus. She had surgery yesterday. My Mom, who had stage 1 IDC 8 years ago is now nervous. She always thought she's done and hers wasn't that serious. Now she realizes it hasn't been that long and she needs closer follow-up. So I have some genetics working against me.
Wendy, so good to see you back! I've been worried about you. Being in the middle of getting scan results interpreted is so hard. Hugs to you, and we're here if you need us.
Rosieo, I'll try to find out some answers for you. I'm pretty sure you'd be safe to smoke or use other medical products while on chemo, but I'm no Dr. MJ is used for side effects. Does your bottle have instructions?
I'm stopping here as it's been a long day for me. Time to rest and watch TV.
Goodnight.
Leslie

I plan to follow this thread as well and explore the subject in depth. It just seems logical to me that cannabis in all forms can help with many medical maladies. I don't think it would have made it this far if that were not true. I just need way more information and validation of benefits. If I find a reputable dispensary and some science based evidence supports it's use I will be the first in line to try it. Starting with trying it to ease anxiety and better yet stunting tumor growth. I was speaking with a co-worker today who was very embarrassed to admit that her recently graduated daughter, in physical therapy, was volunteering at a dispensary and totally advocates alternative medicines including MM. I told her that this is a movement that is gaining huge momentum and her daughter should be applauded for following her heart.

Sadly, as long as I am able to travel internationally and need to hold on to my law license, there’s no way I can justify applying for a MM card in IL. Because I’d have to sign a statement of intent to violate Federal law, and given the technology that makes it possible for state agencies to coordinate departmental databases (including the Atty. Registration & Disciplinary Commission, which has the power to disbar), as well as with the Federal gov’t (TSA, Homeland Security), I don’t dare take the chance until Congress gets their heads out of their asses and decriminalizes at least MM, if not outright removing marijuana altogether from the controlled-substances list. Obviously, if I ever need chemo and suffer its side effects, or progress to Stage IV, my attitude would change--int’l travel or law practice would probably no longer be in the cards. And in those cases, my MO signs the MM card applications.

News from Australia:
Historic medicinal cannabis legislation passes Parliament
Parliament has passed the Australian Government's historic legislation delivering the "missing piece" for Australian patients and their doctors to access a safe, legal and reliable supply of medicinal cannabis products for the management of painful and chronic conditions.

Hurray for Australia!!
I am also following this thread. Working and hoping for MM in Florida one day! I may not need it at this point,, but many others do.
-
Chi, that is definitely something I should think about as well since I work with children in a state entity. Thanks Stephanie, Good for Australia!
-
Canada yesterday just legalized the growing of your own plants for medicinal purposes. To bad I'm living in an apartment now and not on my farm....

Wendy, don't u think a vacation to Oregon may be just what you need?
Here's a link to many research studies. I'll keep looking for more details about what we need to take, how to use MM, and amounts. Most of what I'm finding are studies saying MJ works, but don't translate into how much to use. I'll keep looking
