Detoxing after treatment

Is there any advice on how to successfully detox after treatment? From my understanding amounts of chemotherapy and radiation are left in the body even after eliminating through urination and bowel movements.

Any experiences with cleansing the body after treatment? Thank you!

    Jinx, I too am interested in the answers you receive. I am 2 years out from end of treatment, and I just now feel like my tissues are getting back to normal. I am just now able to lose the 10 pounds I gained during treatment. I drink tons of water, but I know I could exercise more...

    To detox, you'll need to either sweat it out or go to the bathroom more. Exercise, drink lots, eat plenty of fiber. Breathing is also a form of detoxing. During weight loss this study says you lose about 80% through the lungs.

    More tips here. Don't know much about the doctor's diet though.

    Both chemo and rads can have long-term effects. So the detoxing is not just for the time right after treatment but for the long haul.

    Heidi, I read that article and now I can't shake the vision of all those post-xmas eaters walking around with a greasy cloud around their heads. It's CO2 too, so it's contributing to global warming!

    I am very interested in detoxing and wondering what everyone is doing?

    Several months ago, I started rinsing with coconut oil first thing in the morning before I drink water or eat. You can add food grade peppermint oil to give you fresh breath. It is supposed to remove toxins via your mouth. It's called oil-pulling. I have used sesame oil, too, But the coconut oil really whitens your teeth! Do not spit in your sink, spit in the toilet bowl so not to clog up your sink!

    I also do intermittent fasting. I can usually only so 24-28 hour fasts.

    I'm also going to a sauna to detox through my skin.

    Any one else?

    Lol, Piper's! Better never to gain weght. You won't be contributing to global warming by consuming resources and then again by losing what you've stored.

    I'm a coconut oil fan so maybe I'll try oil pulling to whiten my teeth. Thanks for the tip, letranger.

    I go through intermittent periods of detoxing in steam baths and warm pools. I did intermittent fasting for a whole year but one where I fasted for 17 hours and ate during a window of 7 hours every day. It helped me lose weight. Usually I exercised in the morning in a fasted state except for coffee with milk.

    Cool discussion. Here are some more ideas:

    I sip on hot water throughout the day. I can be tea, a concoction of a homemade brew of tumeric, ginger, and cumin. Add honey if needed.

    My massage therapist massages my stomach. She uses sesame oil.

    Now that I am off xeloda, I can do foot baths with Epsom salts and essential oil like oregano. The feet are porous so toxins can be released.

    I almost forgot. I have a biomat, which gives off far infrared heat via amethyst crystals, and negative ions. It gets up to 158 deg and is the most relaxing thing I have in my anti-stress arsenal. It is supposed to detox you in a similar way to a FIR sauna, though more localized and if you take niacin (not the slo form), this will help the detox process.

    Wow! I looked up Biomats! They are expensive! I know the crystals and negative ions are the costly part, but I have been using a hot water bag in my bed on my feet. I sleep better with my feet warm!

    My co-worker and dear friend brought me lemons from her tree. She said eat them whole, skin and all. My mouth puckered at the thought! But, guess, what? OMG. They are delicious!!! The skin is so soft! If you can get your hands on someone's lemon tree, try it!

    Hey all,

    I am taking a 4-week mind/body detox class. Just had my first session and thought I would add a few notes here:

    - eat 10 cups of veggies a day (low carb veggies are best)

    - drink half of your body weight in ounces (100 lbs, drink 50 oz)

    - don't eat past 7pm so your digestive system can rest and have enough time for fasting. Your stomach needs to be empty for detox

    - you may feel some discomfort while detoxing. The longer the symptoms last, the stronger the healing crisis.

    -because many toxins leave the body through the skin, light brushing of skin can be helpful. I don't do this on my LE arm. Soaking in a warm bath with Epsom salt may also be helpful.

    - no gluten, alcohol, caffeine, soy, soda and fruit drinks

    - no tomato sauce as it may contain common allergens. fresh tomatoes ok.

    - avoid some meats esp if they have estrogens, antibiotics, and processed meats

    - no sugar products

    - avoid dairy. This is super hard for me as I love cheese and cottage cheese. Dairy is inflammatory

    -toxins are stored in your fat cells. They are released into your bloodstream while detoxing.

    - body H2O increases as inflammatory response

    -You can test your adrenal glands and how they are working with a saliva test. I want to do this.

    - most allergy test labs will only test for one gluten allergen. There are 4.

    -green apple has a low glycemic index

    - eat berries

    -eat healthy fats

    - drink broths

    - she weighed us on a tanita scale which measures a bunch of stuff (weight, body fat, body water, bone mass)

    I am currently practicing the ketogenic diet which has high good fats and protein and veggies (eating just enough protein that my body can use, otherwise will go through neo-glucogenesis and the extra protein will turn into glucose) so I am not sure how I will handle the low fat diet in this detox.

    Anyways, I always take diets and modify them. No bodies are the same. So do what you will with this knowledge.

    Always a good idea to do things slowly when you are trying a new diet or something new with your health. This guide is for generalized info purposes only. Always do your own homework on diets as "expert" opinions vary.

    Yes letranger, the biomats are expensive but I use mine every single day and have found it to be worth the price. Thanks for the info on detoxing--there is some good info in there.

    A friend of mine who has done chemo and rad has been doing one coffee enema everyday (or two enemas if she has had heavier stuff such as meat that day) for 8 months. I also have been doing coffee (and chamomile tea) enemas for two months but I did not do chemo or rad. The first two months or so I saw a lot of gallstones, parasites in the toilet. It gets cleaners as you go. There is a lot of info on this online.

    I was told green juices (kale, green apple, blueberries, ginger, spinach) twiceevery day, also lots of green tea,garlic and tumeric to flush out your system. Bathe in apsom salts which draw out toxins. Exercise to sweat it out. Stay away from sugar, wheat, alcohol and dairy.

    I'm a fan of fluids in (mostly water), fluids out (exercise, or anything that makes you sweat) and stress reduction, especially through meditation, particularly tai chi.

    Pipers, I'm curious about the biomat. I just took a quick peek at Amazon, and they seem to be all over the place in size and price. Here's a link.     I wonder if there's any contradiction for biomat therapy if our bc is metastatic (bones). Had anyone looked into this?

    I am also a big fan of Epsom salt baths, especially after a CT or other scan.

    What great responses! I really believe that detoxing after treatment is definitely something that has to be done on a every day basis. For example drinking more water, less stress, including exercise, sweating via sauna, changing in diets, and keeping your immunity high with supplements and or vitamins derived from whole foods.

    @letranger, your cleanse sounds about right! I hope its going well. Thank you for the tips.

    Epsom salt baths are soo soothing! I cannot wait.

    dlb, I'm confused by all those choices too! I know the brand name is biomat and I bought the mx 7000, which is about a 3/4 length mat and plenty for what I need. It comes with a purple suitcase so you can take it when you travel. The man I bought it from said that it's best to use it every day and every time you sit down you should get under it. He also said to drink a glass of water before getting under it and one after. I sent him a message to ask about your question about bone mets so I'll get back with you when he replies.

    Wow, Clint got back with me right away. Here's what he said about the biomat with bone mets: "According to FDA, There are no contra-indicators on that. If they are currently on chemo-radiation , there are special indications and considerations. "

    I don't think this product's been mentioned above, but I was just prowling around the internet, looking for a supplement my hubby wants, and I came across this Liver Cleanse. I know Thorne is a high quality, premium brand, carried by many health care professionals, including the cancer support shop @ UCLA.     Hmm, that Liver Cleanse seems like it has a lot of good things in it (burdock root, dandelion root, milk thistle, uva ursi, berberine). I don't know much about uva ursi, but everything else seems to have both liver protective qualities, and impressive anti-cancer effects, too. Haven't seen anything negative about any of those. Kinda tempted to try it myself (although, I take enough supplements as it is!)

    dlb, I can't answer to the liver cleanse product, but I know that my holistic MD prefers the liver/gallbladder cleanse with apple juice, epsom salts, and olive oil. It's not fun at all, at all, and it doesn't do for me what it's supposed to do--make you shit green marbles! But it does make my liver stronger and my doc said to stay with it. I believe him b/c he's making much less money with that than he would selling a liver cleanse product. When this whole thing started, I had a big brownish yellow spot in the inside part of both eyes on the white, but that fades a little with each cleanse.

    For this cleanse you need malic acid tablets, ultra-phos liquid, organic apple juice, epsom salts, and organic olive oil. For about 3-4 days you drink apple juice (can be diluted with half water/juice) with the ultra phos drops mixed in. You also take 4 malic acid tablets each day. On the last day you eat a light lunch and skip dinner and at 6 you drink some water with epsom salt mixed in and then at 9 you drink a half cup of olive oil with some lemon juice or cola mixed in. Then you go to bed and lay on your right side in a fetal position and go to sleep if you can lol. Some people get really nauseated but I don't. I just have a normal BM in the morning and that's about it. No marbles. And those brown spots are fading.

    When he first told me to do this I didn't really trust that it would help that much and I did a few and then stopped a few months. On my next visit after I hadn't done them for about 5 months he was testing me and he gave me that look and asked me why I hadn't been doing my liver cleanse. Now I'm a believer--his testing very much picked up on that.

    pipers, I can't imagine doing that liver cleanse! I was thinking I might try it as I started reading the ingredients and procedure -- until I got to the part about drinking 1/2 c. of olive oil. Definitely not for me! I remember my son did that one time when he was trying to pass a kidney stone, and he regretted it the moment he did, it was so nauseating. I just don't think I could get it down. But if anyone else decides to try it, please report back to us!

    I thought I'd share the label from a Detox tea I have used for quite some time. It contains a lot of the same ingredients in the Thorne Liver Cleanse product (above), and unlike some detox teas I've tried, it tastes great. I buy it from a little spice store I frequent, and you can order it on-line from them too.

    The only detoxing I have tried is oil pulling. I also eat cilantro with food. I should try the Epsom salt bath.

    dlb, I won't lie to you--drinking 1/2 cup olive oil is one of the harder things I've done--I kind of imagine that the only thing grosser might be eating cockroaches, lol. And yet it does get a little easier each time. I'd like to just toss it down but instructions say to sip it a little at a time. Some folks add coca cola to help make it go down easier. I add lemon juice.

    Toxins are stored in adipose (fat) tissue. Lemon and grapefruit essential oils release toxins from adipose tissue. I put a few drops in my drinking water several times a day. The essential oils are totally different from just squeezing lemon or grapefruit juice into your water. They are cold pressed from the rind so they have a completely different chemistry. You MUST be sure it is therapeutic grade and approved for internal consumption though. I use doTERRA brand for this reason.

    If you don't like the flavor for some reason you can also apply the oils to areas where you have adipose tissue (breasts, belly, hips) with a carrier oil like fractionated coconut oil.

    Also be sure to drink it from a glass or stainless steel container. These citrus oils are very good at breaking down petrochemicals... if you drink them out of a plastic container they will just cause the plastics to leech into your water and you will be drinking MORE toxins instead of releasing the ones that are already inside of you!

    And one last piece of advice... DO NOT drink citrus oils while undergoing radiation. They can make you slightly photo sensitive to sunlight and may predispose you to burning. So just wait till after RADS and chemo are over to drink them!

    Thank you for all the great ideas, I'm new here. Had my double mx in july. Auxillary dissection last week. Which BTW hurts worse than the double mx, didn't see that coming. I have autoimmune diseases that I've been working with a long time. My focus is on eating for nutrients and doing it clean. Hiking 7-9 miles a day. I have Neuropathy in my arms, hands from type 1 diabetes. I use a lot of dead sea salt bath and walking for neuropathy pain, it works better for me than any meds. I have recently researched coffee enemas. For me it was huge, not only for my diabetic issues, but for post surgery pain and detox. Love kombucha also. Repopulates the gut bacteria. I am starting chemo soon and really worried about detox with all my other health issues. How soon after treatment can I start detox? How many hours or days does the chemo stay active? I want to cleanse ASAP. Thanks again for this discussion I am at the beginning and worrying about many things. I'm trying to hit this from all sides hard. BTW, some exciting news, the artificial pancreas is out! I will have it in time to go through treatments, cheers to all type 1 diabetics.
