I have just found out I am going for round two with IDC. 1st go around was a horrible experience with my very highly rated BS not being honest about how many lymph nodes were removed. Pain management was awful and I completely stopped going to her 5 months after first surgery. Haven't seen a BS since summer 2012. My oncologist told me I should go back and tell her why I quit going. So today I went and she has an entire new office staff with the exception of her assistant. Our meeting went well and I laid everything out on the table. She didn't apologize but she did say she failed me and appreciated me coming back. Her assistant never once spoke to me.

My husband is passionate about me finding another BS. He was amazed I would even go back today. The only other BS that I would have gladly seen retired recently. Another one I read the review online and he seemed like a jerk. So does anyone have a good recommendation for a Dallas BS? My husband wants me to go to NOLA but I am thinking this hopefully will be a much smaller ordeal than my last go around.

hi there.....I'm curious who you went to originally. My BS is Amy Eastman and I love her. She was the rock of my cancer team during active treatment. I had terrible experience with PS.

I've heard good things about Sally Knox at big Baylor though, she is supposed to be one of the best.

Dr. Alison Laidley at Medical City in Dallas is excellent.

New Girl, sorry you are dealing with this again.

My BS who I love is Deborah Farr at UTSW. Very young, but did a great job getting clear margins in my ILC lumpectomy. She is very open and honest, and always has time to answer questions. Really feel like she cares. No God complex. I also considered MD Anderson, which was a great second opinion experience.

    Hello New-girl

So sorry to read you have a second go-around with breast cancer.

I can recommend Amy Gunter, she practices in Weatherford and Ft. Worth, after 5 years I am only seeing my MO who is closer to home, so not sure if Dr. Gunter still practices. She was about 200 miles north of where I live, but worth the travel.

I had an unpleasant experience with the first surgeon I saw at Baylor. On my first visit, we waited for over 2 hours to see her, and then her bedside manner was just terrible. I would leave messages for her medical assistant and not hear back for days. When you're first diagnosed and freaking out, this is just unacceptable. I went ahead and used her for the port placement, but decided I would find someone else before my mastectomy (I'm doing chemo first). Two people referred me to Dr. Archana Ganaraj at Presbyterian, and she is just great. She immediately put me at ease and made me feel a million times better. I am so glad I decided to make the switch. I can't imagine having to see that other doctor regularly.

Hi - I had a BMX just over a month ago at UTSW and my surgeon was Dr. Roshni Rao.

I interviewed her, Dr. Laidley and 3rd BS who shall remain unnamed who was awful (the only male).

I also heard good things about Dr. Ganaraj at Presby but she was out of the country in December.

It was down to Rao and Laidley.

Personally I think I should have gone with Laidley as I like her personality better but DH and others pushed me to Rao & UTSW as it is NCI facility & teaching hospital.

I think (hope) Dr. Rao did a great job on my surgery.

I also was very lucky with all my biopsies getting done at UTSW by Dr. Evans who was great.

Going to UTSW you can kind of do 1-stop for everything including follow-up.

However I was not happy with MO I saw there & am looking for a new MO for 2nd opinion.

I tried to see Dr. O' Shaunessy at Baylor as she was recommended by a few people I know but she is only seeing new patients who are triple-N or have more advanced NC or so I was told by her scheduler.

Please send me a PM if you war any more info. Good luck.

Also is there a Dallas group here who ever has get-togethers as I see some of the other geographical areas do? Thanks,

I have had all my testing done :cat scan, chest xray, blood work, bone scan, bone density and MRI. Everything except MRI is back and all is good. Yeah. I have seen Laidley who ordered the testing but plan to visit Michael Grant at Baylor downtown and possibly two other to get their recommendations. I truly do not want to do radiation and tamoxifen. Not sure anyone will be happy with this but if my margins are clear and my cancer seems to be the very same slow growing I am beyond hesitant to do more.

Balthus- We had a group back in 2012 but it dissolved pretty quickly. I think we all wanted to forget that year. I know Medical City used to have a group I went to every month but I just learned it also dissolved due to lack of interest. I saw a flyer up at Baylor when I went but didn't get the details. Let me know if you want to start another.

Archana Ganaraj (Archie)is a friend of mine from quilting classes we took together. She is one smart cookie, has great and impeccable credentials from wonderful schools and hospitals (I think Harvard & MSK), is kind, funny and a lot of fun to be around. I wish she was on my insurance.

Im sooo glad to have found this post!!!!! I am in Rowlett and just got diagnosed last week. I saw Laidley and liked her, but I dont like the PS she uses (they are too young and she said she is helping them build their practices. I dont like that, I want experience there). I have appt with M Grant tomorrow and want to use Paul Pin for PS (I think!). I saw Grant back in 09 and didnt love his bed side manner, but Im not looking for a friend, Im looking for an excellent doctor!!! I was also told to see Rao at UTSW (who has no openings for another month!!!!). Im so confused and just starting on this scary roller coaster!! I would LOVE to meet up with you guys!!!

My surgeon was Dr. Lynn Canavan. She was fabulous. The fist thing she said to me after diagnosis was, " Dont worry. We've got this.". She was so positive the entire time. Even when we found out it was worse than we both expected. The only down sidw to her is the wait. Ugh. I would wait an hr to see her. She was always running behind. However, as soon as you were in a room with her, you knew why. Time would stand still and she treated you like you were her only pt. She was great.

Hey, I just had my consult with Michael Grant at big Baylor and loved him. He took his time, explained things, was patient and kind. I will be using him. Next up is my PS find. Thinking about Paul Pin for implants, or Fadi Constantine for DIEP flap (but not sure if I want that). Just thought you would want to know.

@WARRIORWANNABE - Glad you found a BS you are feeling strong about! I only interviewed 2 PS - one at UTSW and one at Presby but then decided not do recon. Someone gave me Constantine's name & I think he is either same office or floor as the one I saw at Presby who was recommended for implants. Keep us posted.

FYI I wanted to do something as a thank-you for friends, family, co-workers, etc for their support before/during/after my surgery but was unable to write 50+ thank-you cards.

I remembered about 7or 8 years ago a friend who worked at a Dallas art gallery asked me to donate soothing for an auction for a local BC nonprofit and so I googled and found it.

It was/is the Bridge Breast Network. I was blown away when I went to their website Bridge Breast Network and read about what they do & their mission: The Bridge Breast Network saves lives by providing access to diagnostic and treatment services for breast cancer to low income, uninsured and underinsured individuals.

I made a donation and my husband and I attended their annual fundraiser this past Saturday night. It was my first real big night since my surgery 6 weeks ago and it was wonderful.

I urge everyone local to read about how they help woman in our area without resources for tests, biopsies, surgery, etc.

    Thanks.

I'm also in Dallas and interviewing Rao, Grant, and Ganaraj. So far, I have been very impressed with how helpful UTSW has been with organizing appointments and obtaining medical records. I'll keep you posted on my progress, and I'd love to hear any additional comments you have.

Balthus--I live near the Bride Breast Network, but never realized the wonderful work they do. It warmed my hear to hear of all of the women and families they help. I'm excited about getting involved myself.

I'd too would like to meet up--this is a terribly confusing time, and a support network would be wonderful!

Im doing everything at big Baylor. Im a newbie like you and kind of terrified trying to take in all this overwhelming info!!!!

Monica - you may also want to interview Dr. Laidley at Medical City. She was my 2nd choice after Rao and maybe my first if dates had been right.

WarriorWannabe- I did my BMX/SNB on 1/12/16 which was a little over 1-2 months depending on counting from the mammogram date when calcifications first found or the date when when I had results of 4 biopsies over a month later after a breast MRI.

I posted a list of things I found are very useful at the hospital & when I got home in the Jan & Feb surgery threads. Next Tuesday is my 8 week post-surgery date and I am still using my Relax The Back sleep wedge. Also be sure to get a Amoeba camisole with drain pockets.

If I can help in any way let me know and if the Dallas women are interested in connecting some weekend I would love to meet.

    Breathe :)

I live in North Dallas and work near The Galleria.

I know construction on 635 is awful these days but maybe we could meet for lunch near NorthPark one weekend.

I have a lot going on including my trip since surgery in 2 weeks to see my mom through beginning of April on weekend but I could meet next weekend on Sat mid-afternoon (tied up 11-1) or next Sun for brunch.

    Let me know.

    Thanks.

I have now seen Laidley, Grant and Gunarai. Monday I see Rao. Grant found a lump in the upper quadrant of my breast that Laidley missed. He ordered a sonogram. I sent the results on to Laidley since I am still scheduled for her to do the lumpectomy on April 4th. No response. No nothing.

Grant suggested a larger lumpectomy to get the new lump along with getting my margins clean. He didn't think I would need plastics involved although he didn't seem too concerned I would be left with a larger scar and less of my DIEP breast.

Gunaraj was by far the most engaging and helpful. She actually looked through all my original records and explained a few things Laidley wouldn't do. Made me know I wasn't the crazy one to be upset over 16 perfectly healthy nodes removed. She gave me the option of having a smaller lumpectomy and get the biopsy of the new lump at that time. Lump is too close to the sternum and muscle to get during a core biopsy making surgery to time to get to it. Risk is having to do another more invasive surgery definitely involving plastics if lump comes back cancerous. 2nd option is doing same surgery Grant suggested but involving plastics for optimal results.

I would probably go with Gunaraj now but UTSW was able to move my appointment up from the 24th to the 7th. I was surprised to hear about their billing. Even with me taking all my records and films, my visit on Monday will cost me close to $500 out of pocket with BCCS insurance. UTSW bills office visits as hospital visits as explained to me on Friday. Seems crazy to me. My second opinion and third opinion was my normal copay for an office visit. My testing has all been billed under my deductible. My husband wanted me to get another opinion just to confirm with my choice.

I am still perplexed and extremely disappointed in Laidley. We talked at length in January when she ordered all my testing done. I haven't heard a word from her or her office since being sent my new pathology report. I personally feel she is too busy and lacking a good office staff to handle her current work load.

It will be interesting to see tomorrow what Rao has to say. I took all my films and reports down to UTSW last week so hopefully she will be prepared when I see her in the morning. I am ready to make a plan and get started on this second phase.

I saw Laidley, and liked her, until I met Grant. There is something about him that gave me hope and confidence in his abillity and judegements. I wish I would have visited Gunaraj, but I want to get this show on the road. Lynn Canavan is another I heard is good.

Newgirl, help me understand your situation. You've had a BMX (negative nodes so no rad, no chemo?) with DIEP, and now you have BC again? Regarding your insurance, what is your out of pocket max? Once you hit that (and it sounds like it may be soon) the policy should pay 100% (as long as you stay in network, things are covered etc) for the rest of its annual term. Hope this helps.

Let us know how the visit with Rao goes. UTSW is NIC and that would have been my #1 choice. I just didnt want to wait anymore. My BMX is 3/30.

I had a BMX with DIEP in 2012. All nodes came back negative so no chemo or radiation. Laidley said surgery should get it all. I choose not to take Tamoxifen although both Laidley and my onc highly suggested it. In December of 2012 a spot appeared on my new right boob. Doctors thought it was a skin tag, oil bump but nothing to worry about. When it got to the size of a pimple I wanted it gone for cosmetic reasons only. Turned out it was cancerous with IDC. Now Grant found another lump in same breast near sternum. Won't know status of that lump until surgery.

The plan so far is surgery and then rads. I have already started Tamoxifen. If lump near sternum is cancerous, plans will change.

    NEWGIRL - thinking of you.

Yes UTSW charges you separately for doctor and for facility. I believe though from talking to our insurance rep (we have BCBS) that many of the hospital based doctors are same at Baylor & Presby. Could be wrong.

Newgirl-you are in my thoughts and prayers. I would love to hear your impressions of Rao and how they plan to monitor you in the future (I'm not a doctor, but another lump 11 months later is troubling). Not to mention another missed lump this time around. Thank goodness you demanded treatment.

Thanks so much for sharing the info on the office visits. My husband and I are starting a business, so as of March 1, 2016, I was uninsured (been trying to figure out why my karma is off lately ;) We've decided to go with COBRA, as insurance plans for small businesses don't have my daughter's pediatrician (a very big practice in Dallas, so I was shocked that I couldn't find a single plan that they would accept), let alone the team that I'm learning I'll need for this fight. Needless to say, the cost of COBRA is more than it would normally cost to insure the entire family ... que sera sera.

I have an appointment with Grant on 3/10; still haven't been able to schedule with Gunaraj, and in fact, after I told them that I have COBRA, they refused to make the appointment until I have a conference call with the business office. Visit with Rao is tentatively scheduled for the end of the month, but they looked at the records and are considering an expedited appointment.

I live and work near Big Baylor, so any other the locations mentioned work for me. With the exception of 3/12, would love to meet you ladies :)

I am so thankful for all of the knowledge that is being shared on this site--thanks again!
