Fatigue 12 weeks after surgery, no treatment

I had a double mastectomy 12 weeks ago and required no treatment. I had cancer in both breasts, and both tumors were stage 1 with no lymph node involvement, clear margins, and low Oncotype scores. I have tissue expanders and am almost done with the weekly saline fills. I'm still experiencing major fatigue and wonder if anyone else with a similar situation (mastectomy with no treatment) is experiencing or has experienced fatigue?

Yes I had 10 months of fatigue! My surgeon said its the anesthesia as much as the surgery. The longer your surgery was the longer it takes to recover.

I'm 8 weeks out and still pass out as soon as I come in the door from work. I didn't think I was gonna make it through the day when I went back to work, but it's getting better. If I'm moving and busy I do ok, but as soon as I stop...my eyes close.

Almost 4 months since BMX and 3 since ALND. I sleep 10-12 hours a night. Can't say I ever feel energized. I wonder how much hormones (or there lack-of) contributes to this?

You are taking hormones, right? A BMX w/o other treatment should be followed by hormones. And I really think any ER+ cancer should get hormones as soon as DX based on my results

Hi Pam and all who are suffering with this very common and troubling side effect of breast cancer and its treatment, including surgery.

There's some really great information on Managing Fatigue from the main Breastcancer.org site. There's also some great tips there to help manage this effect!

    We hope this helps!

I found exercise (slow to moderate walking) helped me feel more energized.

Hi Leslie13, I'm not taking hormones. My oncologist prescribed Arimidex, an aromatase inhibitor, to suppress hormone production. I've just gotten them.  I'm struggling with fatigue and not feeling well, so I'm praying that I'll have none of the many possible side effects that AI's are known to produce.  Thanks for your input.

Thanks ksusan, BethL, and TwoHobbies for your posts. I've begun a nutritional eating plan and will begin walking in hopes of building up my stamina. 😊 I will post periodically to update my progress. I wish health and vitality for all of us in this sisterhood.
