Winter 2015-16 RADS

Luzeelu give it some more time to feel better. My mo said 6 weeks and they were right.
Renee I also am really tired. Started last week. I did go back to work and the drivin to and from rads and then to and from work is adding to my tiredness. I felt a bit dizzy last week and upped my water intake to what I was drinking during chemo and felt better.
-
Twinki, that does sound like dehydration to me, hope drinking more water helps.
I am having sharp intermittent stabbing pain in radiated breast, about three weeks post end of rads. Anyone else experience this?
Hugs
Octogirl

hey ladies! just wanted to give a skin update. I'm about 3 weeks past full breast rads and one week past booster rads for the treated area. My whole breast area is honestly almost back to complete normal. My cleavage area has already gone back to normal color and matches the non radiated side. Under my boob and by my armpit is a little tan but it honestly just looks like a normal beach vacation tan. The boosted area is definitely a little darker but not red anymore at all. The skin is really dry in the boosted area still but I just slather on the lotion and I'm good to go. I did use an exfoliating brush to lightly scrub over the entire radiated area. The flaking and dry skin was driving me crazy. I'm sure that's not recommended but I didnt see any adverse effects, etc.
Glad to see everyone is holding up well!
-
Octo- YES! Out of the blue. The RO said it's normal...lovely, huh? Hugs.
-
I'm at the halfway mark today! Two more weeks of rads and then I'm done! (Well....onto Tamoxifen, but out of active treatment....y'all know what I mean.)
Anyway, I've been thinking about this all weekend. Once rads are finished and life goes back to "normal", what happens? Life will not be the life I knew before cancer came along. I'm a different person now, things are different now. Not a bad different or a good different....just different. How do you cope when active treatment is finished and you're left to go back to normal?
-
mdoc, thanks for the add. I will be having 6 weeks of radiation.
-
Hello Ladies! I am in Toronto, Ontario and trying to find out if any of my Canadian sisters were offered the prone position radiation (on your stomach) instead of the supine (on your back)? If yes, which hospital and was it only because you had to agree to be in a clinical trial study? Also, very interested in hearing from any ladies who had the prone about how long was the treatment and the extent of skin damage issues. Thank you all so much!!
-
I finished day 15 of 16 treatments today (Canadian Fractionation). One more to go in the morning!!!
I've mistakenly thought that once rads was over that the healing would start immediately. I found out today I was wrong about that............RO said that to expect for the skin to still get worse over the next couple of weeks before it starts healing. And that the fatigue would continue. I'm still not going to complain at this point though because I thought my skin would be much worse than it is. I am going to buy some hydrocortisone today for the itching (RO recommended). Anyone have any other suggestions on relieving the itch?
-
Fearless195 - Have you tried antihistamine or allergy pills with antihistamine?
-
Marijen - I could try the pills at night-time but couldn't use during the day because I work and they would make me too sleepy. Will consider an anti-histamine cream though. Good idea. Thank you!
-
Hello! I am 10 days done, 18 to go. My skin is pink and just that little bit scratchy against my shirt. I try to wear super soft tanks or camis. I have had a couple of days of complete fatigue and then I bounced back. I expect I'll see that SE again. The fatigue is different than the chemo fatigue. Less like I'm living at 16,000 feet and more like my batteries are drained down.
@mdoc- I felt terrified and angry and just generally pissy about starting rads. Now that I am into the rhythm of them, they're not so bad. I have even come to like that I am the first one on the table at 7:30. It's kind of like a job, people are counting on me to warm up the table : )
Here are some of the things I've learned recently that I thought were interesting. My RO and nurse recommend eating a ton of protein to give the body extra to heal from the chemo. I asked if I could eat sushi yet, and the short answer is not yet. Although my immune system is bouncing back (slowly!), it is busy trying to heal the radiation, so don't stress it out. And stay out of the pool and ocean.
@etnasgrl - that is the exact question I have been asking myself! Two months out of chemo, I am finally coming out of the fog. And this is what my peabrain is circling. How do I go back to normal? What parts of normal do I want to do differently? Who am I now and what is normal? I feel a little lost. I have tons of support and the luxury of no real money worries, but I just feel a little lost, or disconnected, or existential angst : )
I have another surgery (ovary removal) scheduled for Mar 2nd so I haven't run out of doctors appointments yet. But I don't feel as focused/all consumed as I did during chemo and my mind is wandering...
Is it better to squash these thoughts or continue to gnaw on them
-
Fearless- My RO gave me a "recipe" for the itching and skin issues: 1 part hydrocortisone cream, 1 part "jock itch" cream (ha) and 1 part antibiotic ointment. I do think it helped..there were times when the itching was relentless so I took oral Benedryl at night. Am almost 2 weeks out from rads -some fatique, skin healing and much less itching!
Yay for one more- Warrior on!
-
I ask myself the question, too, of what "out of active treatment" will feel like. I'm working on my rads attitude problem--I hope it goes away once I start (Thursday).
Kim, I got the same impression re: mastectomy/chest wall being a bit harder than whole breast. I'm stocked up on Miaderm, Aloe, and Aquaphor and hoping for the best.
As long as it's not like chemo fatigue, I think I can deal. Chemo fatigue was profound.
I'm trying not to worry about my lung/ribs, which is like saying "don't think about a pink elephant."
-
Happy Hammer --- thanks for the "recipe." I think I may have to try that, especially before the itch becomes unbearable. I'd already decided to try the benadryl at night. I guess a trip to the store is on schedule for after work today.
-
KateB79, keep using the Miaderm before and during... I started week 3 this week and the techs even commented on my skin looking amazing.. It isn't even pink! Feels good and is super soft... I'm so thankful the PT specialist recommended it. Breathe deep, it isn't as bad as I made it out in my mind. My arm didn't even fall asleep today, which was great!
Peabrain, I agree with your definition of the fatigue... Chemo fatigue was debilitating for me, this fatigue is definitely more like batteries being drained. I just need to find a good way to recharge, instead of continually running dry...
Fearless, My RO said, "remember, radiation is the gift that keeps on giving... You'll feel fatigue, and skin irritation, at least 2 weeks after it ends..."
etnasgrl, I often wonder what the "life after treatment" is going to be... Personally, I just want to have days of feeling healthy and alive and present in my own life and that of my family... What that will look like, well...
-
JerseyGirl, I started using the Miaderm this weekend! It seems like good stuff. I'm impressed by how well it absorbs. My plan is to use it during the day and it, then Aquaphor, at night. Fingers crossed that I take a long time to "pink up," as my RO says.
Chemo is the gift that keeps on giving, and so is rads. Huh.
-
Fearless- I used all generic brands.
I do not think our bodies can build up a tolerance for itching so sure hope you get some relief! Hugs.
-
JerseyGirl --- I like that: "the gift that keeps on giving." And it's one of those gifts I can't "re-gift" at that!
-
Thanks for the responses, ladies.
Well....I guess we'll all just have to figure out how life will be once treatment is over. It'll be a learning process, that's for sure! -
My bad attitude about rads improved once I got going, but I am so tired. I'm trying to stay hydrated and get enough protein. Blech.
-
Yikes this thread moves fast!
Octogirl, I started having the shooting pains last week! 2.5 weeks post rads. I'm going back to my physical therapy stretches and I'm going to massage like crazy. I'm sure my husband thinks I'm really weird since I've been massaging my breast for a half hour or more during movies or Downton Abbey! Our TV room is in the basement away from risking my 21 yr old son seeing me working on my boob! I can just imagine what he would think of his mother if he caught her in the act!
-
Speaking of pain....I've got a quick question...
Do any of you get a stabbing pain in your breast that comes out of nowhere? I was standing at the kitchen sink just a little bit ago and BAM....this stabbing pain in my breast almost took my breath away. As fast as it came on, it left.
It happens from time to time, ever since starting rads.
Does this happen to any one else? -
Wow this thread moves so fast it is hard to keep up. Congrats to everyone finishing and hoping for minimal side effects for everyone still going through. So I thought today would be my first treatment but found out when I got there they had to do a dry run the first day and take more pictures. Then they had issues with the pictures left me laying there for about 10 mins before saying they were sending me to meet with a nurse and then come back and start over. Not a great way to start. I am not getting a warm and fuzzy feeling about this cycle of treatments. And I am with the rest of you as to what will the new normal be once this is done. Well first treatment is tomorrow so maybe I will get a better feeling. Nothing to look at in the room and they techs never did any talking through it today. Hope the next 7 weeks go by fast.
Thanks for listening to me rant and now I shall move forward. Hope everyone has a good week

Welcome Welcome MissV123, DiDel & Dorothy26.. so so sorry you have to be here but so glad you found our great group here! Lots of awesome sharing and support here.
DiDel - so many hugs to you in facing this a 2nd time - hoping Rads gets it all for you! How many treatments do you need? Normal Regimen or is it different?
Dorothy26 - hope you get some answers re: Prone Position.. Did you want to be added to our group? Are you starting Radiation?
phoebe58 - so funny about baby oil - been there done that many many years ago and now use nothing less than 30 sunblock HaHa! So hope it's not lymphedema - fingers crossed!!
JerseyGirl - thanks for saying that- so very frustrating when your Doc doubts your se's .. Just today spoke with my MO's nurse about being a month out of chemo and the fatigue and neuropathy pain still crushing me and this nurse whom I have known now for 6 months tried to write me off to the RO since I started Radiation today and I called her on it - why would I talk to RO about chemo symptoms that Radiation may only add too.. She caught on and agreed and we ended up having a good conversation but I was initially really ticked that she so easily wanted to dump me to RO .. Hope today went well for you and love your mindset - I am also so looking forward to days of feeling healthy and alive and just being with my family
Kimmer - so hope what your RO nurse said about Mastectomies having worse skin issues from Rads is not true - ugh! I was not told that!
Fearless - so glad you are doing well.. so hope you find relief from the itching - I would try Cortisone Cream OTC or maybe ask for prescription strength .. What an awesome story at the Bball Game - so great for you! And you are allowed to complain anytime...
Twnkltoz - hope you feel better and water helped and so hope your "tired" gets better - I am with ya!
StefLove - glad skin is holding up - hope it continues
Luzeelu - I am 4 weeks post chemo and still not feeling great - fatigue and neuropathy still crushing me and frustrated as I thought I would be better by now - patience is not my strength... hang in there
etnasgrl - I agree and think of what my new "normal" will be and try not to stress about it.. the mental aspect sometimes is exhausting ..
Peabrain - thanks for sharing about feelings going into rads and getting better with the routine - I hope for the same here! Good luck for surgery in March and normally I would squash these thoughts and not able to lately ..
HappyHammer - thanks for sharing the recipe to help itching
KateB - good luck starting Thursday .. I was really nervous today and now that day 1 is over I feel better ..
All - I started Rads today - WooHoo - 1 down 33 more to go.. See pic below - they would not take my picture standing in front of the machine (policy no pics) so I took my own selfie in the changing room and I have to try to find a way to get a picture of it.. I do feel better now that day 1 is done but was so exhausted all day and do feel little twinges in my "FOOB" area all day and shoulder really sore I am sure from holding arms up so long - glad the rest of treatments are not as long! Funny my right non cancer "FOOB" also has pain twinges in it ?? Weird! Looking up at the ceiling in the rad room is large projection of Rain forest with sun beams thru the trees and a beautiful flower garden .. got me thinking they should give patients the option of what they want to project onto the ceiling .. for me that would be 2 beach chairs on the beach facing the ocean with the sun shining and beers in the cup holders of the chairs .. HA!
Have a Good night all!
Mary

-
hey all...today was #1 out of 34 for me..yeah he added one. Thanks for the warm welcome..last night I had to take my niece to the ER(2:30 am) and ended up being at the hospital until my rad appt (8 am) so I had to run across the hospital to the cancer center so no time to be nervous or emotional. Then when I walked in I had a different RN which made a world of difference she was soooooooooo nice and all the techs were great...then one of em pulled out a camera to take my photo for my file . .reminder had 2 hrs of sleep . .rushed niece to er I barely had eyebrows on..I pleaded with her and said I'd wrestle her for that camera if she even attempted to take a photo and put in my file for 34 treatments..she agreed to take it tomorrow but told me I'd better have my face on cause tomorrow was glam shot day. Then I saw the RO afterwards and as he walked in he goes "good news..you're not pregnant ! "It's especially funny cause he's so conservative/nerdy..but it was funny. Tomorrow should be quicker as I'm the first appt of the day.
Kimmer my initial primary tumor was sitting on the chest wall and this recurrence was 9mm from primary . .I had 4 tumors three in different quadrant so my mx scar not over primary so now I have 2 lovely long scars.
OK I have to go to bed I'm exhausted it's been a long day.
Good night all.thanks for the support ..good luck to everyone tomorrow
Diane

Etna- YES! Have been having them of and on since rads and the RO said perfectly normal.
-
Happy Hammer - did your RO say what was the cause of the stabbing pains post rads?
-
Well my post from 1/28 is incorrect. I will NOT finish radiation tomorrow as the machine that does boosts is broken and needs a part. I have missed two days which hopefully puts me at the finish line this Thursday... I am bummed!!!
In response to stabbing pains that come out of nowhere, Yes I experience them too.
-
Fearless...nerves and healing...I am just glad to be DONE in all aspects of the word DONE...will see RO for followup 2 weeks after ending rads on Thurs and will ask again.
