Exercise and well being during chemo and radiation

Still getting 4+ miles a day. Mostly at work. Too tired after to add a workout - 2 year olds are exhausting - especially in large numbers!
-
PB, are you using a pedometer of any kind? I'll sometimes go up and down the stairs a few times just to take it to a round number.
-
You and my husband lol. If we are .1 miles from an even number, he insists on doing the .1 mile!
-
I am hovering around 2 or 2.5 miles per day. Not bad, but not enough and I want to up my game. My biggest obstacle right now is finding time, as work has exploded on me....also, I need to get to the gym as I don't like walking around the neighborhood at night or in the rain....but seeing the gorgeous pool at the gym makes me sad since swimming is off limits.
ok, so clearly I have every bad excuse in the book. As of next week, I am going to swim. Rads burns will be healed, and my octo-soul needs the water!

Yes, I do use a pedometer. I lost my old one and bought a new Omron one, but not liking it that much, seems to be counting less steps. And the mileage while wearing it on the treadmill doesn't match the treadmill mileage, off by 0.3 or 0.4 mi. But I write down mileage/steps at the end of the day and I figure as long as the numbers are going up, it's all good.
I do the same thing too...when I see I'm short at the end of the day...I start roaming around the house 😊

nice work,all!
I've been in a rut of an hour of stairmaster level 9 for a few weeks. Just been too busy to change it up. Highlights of self care include a massage, a yoga flow class, and signed up for a half marathon on Feb 28. Cheers!
-
just signed up for weekly yoga...

Good stuff! I've said somewhere, but not here, that I signed up to walk a half-marathon this spring.
-
January totals
232.1 miles bike riding, 6,401 feet elevation gain
61.9 miles spin class
28 walking miles
Not one of my best months, but I will take it.
-
Awesome job ladies!!! This was the first month I've been good enough to total up my numbers, thx for the spreadsheet idea! 81 miles total. Didn't make my 90 mile goal, but wasn't too far off, good start for me. New month upon us...will try to get to that goal this month 😊
I'm having some hip and lower back pain. It seems to have come on as I try to increase intensity. Or maybe is my AI drugs? Not sure if I'm injuring myself more easily these days? Do you push forward? Back off a bit? I'm trying to back down a bit to see if it will get better and hopefully advance slower next time?

Just back from the gym. An hour of strength training. I go once a week to the gym, and do two more in between at home. I'm making progress, but it is slow. I am progressing, with more resistance every week, and more reps with less rest in between. Didn't get on the recumbent bike though. I need to get that going.

Nice to "see" people here.
My spreadsheet, which I can't easily put in a format that will upload as a photo here, has these columns, based on my preferred activities:
- Date
- Weight
- Did I go to the gym? (Important to track for insurance rebate)
- Miles (Fitbit) (Accounts for walking as well as other activities)
- Zumba
- Treadmill
- Stretch
- Rotator cuff exercises
- Bar lifts
- Bicep curls
- Reclined triceps
- Modified military press
- Crunches
- Dead bug
- Yoga plank
- Rowing
- Elliptical
- Dance
- Other
On no day do I do everything, and on most days I walk, Zumba or treadmill, stretch, do rotator cuff exercises, and maybe dead bugs.
-
ksusan, whenever you say you did dead bugs and I see your signature line that says "Mutant uprising quashed", I immediately go to old SciFi movies like "Them" (the one about giant ants that attack Los Angeles), and my mind translates your post into Mutant uprising squashed dead bugs for me lol.
Yeah, I'm goofy like that.
-
Well, that would be a satisfactory outcome!
-
I lost track of my fitbit but i think I walked 100 miles today. Plus squats with small children on my hip.
-
We found my wife's Fitbit when I ran over it in the garage.

Severity of Menopause Symptoms Linked to Sedentary Lifestyle
http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/858050?nlid=98...
(Requires free registration.)
"Middle-aged women who exercise fewer than three times per week report more severe menopause symptoms than those who get more exercise, a study has shown. They are also significantly more likely to be obese, researchers report in an article published online January 19 in Menopause....
"Of the respondents, 63.9% reported a sedentary lifestyle (fewer than three weekly sessions of physical activity), and of these, 16.1% more severe menopausal symptoms, as indicated by higher total and subscale scores, including individual item ratings, on the Menopause Rating Scale. In comparison, only 10.6% (P < .0001) of their active counterparts reported severe symptoms. The sedentary women also had more depressive symptoms, greater anxiety, and more insomnia.
The prevalence of obesity was significantly higher among the sedentary women, at 20.9%, than in the active group, at 14.3%, and their mean waist circumference was significantly greater, the authors write."

2 hr work out yesterday. 1.5 hrs stairmaster level 8, half hour of machines. Need to step up the an work...getting a tad gelatinous.
Interesting article, ksusan. Menopause hasn't been too bad so far for me- few mile hot flashes per day and that's it. Fair trade for my horrid period, I'd say.
-
Same here, both gelatinousness and no love for my ex-menstrual cycle. I plan to get light free weights back into the picture this week.
-
Just chiming in to say I ain't doing much of anything lately
-- 23 of 28 rads done, and although not hugely fatigued or otherwise affected, I am getting lazier, and have to gear up for my regular stuff. Plus, made the huge mistake of making homemade bread earlier this week, {in a bread machine so don't get all excited}, but still overdid it re portion size and frequency:(
-
I'm just doing my walking at work but it's still averaging 10-12k steps per day. I'm at the lake today so hikes are in my future!
-
Everything counts! I went to a Stella & Dot trunk show last night and managed to eat very few of the snacks provided (a couple of bacon-wrapped dates, a homemade cookie, a glass of red wine, one tiny savory carby thing pressed upon me by the hostess's gentleman friend).
-
Wouldn't it all just be easier if it weren't for bread? It's so yum. Tiny, savory carby things, too.

I need to get going with low weights again so I can build up my arms gradually.
-
Way to go Ksusan! I'm making small strides averaging nearly 3.5 mi/day. Was averaging just about 3 mi/day in January...baby steps. I have a Bowflex at home and started using that this week to start strengthening my arms and shoulders.

Great! I have been thinking about increasing to 60 dead bugs. Thinking. Thinking.
-
Got cleared today to start swimming again....Woohoo!
Weather here has turned springlike, a little earlier than we'd like given that we need rain, rain, rain, but it is nice for walking in the morning...

I spent about 90 minutes gardening today. I was very deliberate about what I did and for how long, shifting activities around every 10 minutes between picking up leaves, pulling weeds, cultivating, and clipping vines and twigs. Several raised beds are now ready for planting; tomorrow we will plant sugar pod peas, kale, arugula, and potatoes, betting that we won't have a frost. We usually get a load of bark mulch a and soil dumped on the driveway, but this year we may get the mulch sprayed instead to safeguard my arms from LE.

Today I had a break through bike ride! 35 personal records, and I did Torrey Pines hill, which is a 5-6% grade for 1.5 miles! A year ago I never thought I would be able to do it, so feeling euphoric today! And it was a 33 mile ride too.
