Low WBC 1 year after stage 1 bc surgery and radiation
I had Surgery and radiation for stage 1 bc a year ago. All labs were normal before surgery ever since the surgery wbc count has dropped. Onc nurse ordered all kinds of labs including Hep and Hiv to name a few. I am sure I do not have any of that but I agreed to have all tested.
I am scared. I feel great, eat healthy and this is a big surprise to me. I am on Tomaxifen 20 mg.
I am reading now about the possibility of damage to the bone marrow do to radiation. The cancer that was removed was extremely close to the sternum. The incision is almost were the sternum is. Could I have damage to the bone marrow?
I am really scared and hope there are others experiencing these things. It helps to discuss.
WBC on 5- 27-1014. 5.2. Surgery was on 11-13-2014
11-11-2015 3.5
1-22- 2016. 2.8
Anyone? I need to learn from otherez

I hate you ask you this but have you had an MRI or Petscan for mets? My sternum has been a little swollen for years, they say nothing. I have a missing primary tumor, so I worry that it's behind the sternum... My WBC has been 3. something for years as well.

Hi teeeny12,
My blood counts were off for almost a year after my treatment. Then one time I want in and the blood counts were fine. I think radiation (and chemo too for me) can really do a number on our bodies. Good luck. I hope that it will be nothing as it was for me.
-
I had an MRI prior to surgery to check for mets. The surgeon said areas of the lungs and below organs were clear,
-
I had falling WBC counts from the time I ended treatment up to 20 months out. Each time I had lab work, the WBC count was a little lower than the previous one. My lowest was 3.1; then it started going back up gradually and now I am up to 5.2 My MO never seemed concerned about it. I was feeling fine the whole time. Maybe it is just a result of treatment and our bodies need time to readjust.

My wbc have been just below normal since the end of active treatment. I don't think this is unusual and neither my Pcp nor oncologist were concerned. I am just over 2 years out from active treatment and my wbc are still right around the lower end of normal.
Try not to worry and keep monitoring your health.

Teeny12--I am three years out and saw the same pattern. My WBC was low WBC in my first blood work in July 2013 (my surgery was in Jan and rads ended in April--no chemo, no hormonal therapy). None of my doctors (including PCP) was concerned--all said this can and does happen and corrects itself. They were right--it did; it was up in July 2014 and rose again in 2015. So my WBCs are now where they always were before surgery, fully within the lower end of the normal range. So relax--you're not alone in experiencing this
When I asked my rad onc if this WBC drop is related to the rads, by the way, she told me that the sternum is not a significant WBC-producing bone--that it produces few WBCs compared to other areas that are "mass producers" of them.

HI, not sure if this helps, but my WBC prior to cancer tx was usually around 6
ever since its been consistently low. normally now about 3.8
Other than frequent colds and easy to pick up sinus infections doctors don't seem concerned.
I hope the cause of your low WBC is nothing too!
-
Hello Teeny
And another one...WBC did not come back to normal for about two years but then corrected itself. All is well now.
Hoping for the same for you.

Diagnosed 5years ago. My WBC remains low. Usually less than 3. MO says it's because my lymphocytes are bringing it down. That reading was 0.5. My MO thinks if it was caused by RADs, it would have corrected itself by now. Low white count can be caused by Tamoxifen, although very far down on the list. I almost never get sick. So, I guess my low count is good enough.
-
My WBC and platelets dropped after 2 mo on Tamoxifen, but the MO was giving me 40 mg/day which was a lot. I switched MOs, and am now on anastrozole. Does anyone know if WBC and platelets rebound if you stop Tamoxifen? Do AIs affect counts?
-
Your WBC may have dropped post-chemo, not because you began Tamoxifen. My MO says that low WBC is fairly common in the year after chemo.
-
I too have a low WBC count, my GP is switching my Venlafaxine anti depressants in case it's that,
Is it something not to worry over?
-
It seems common for years, unfortunately. Mine go down from time to time and for me (you can see from my sig)tx was a while ago. I just had my 5 month check up and my total WBC was in the low normal, but the neutrophils and others were in a tiny bit in the low range. But I always feel fine when my CBC reports a bit low (never catastrophically low!) and so now just blame chemo, rads, etc.
I am also vegetarian, and the only dairy I eat is organic. I read somewhere that vegans/vegetarians often have lower WBC counts simply because our white counts aren't fighting the pathogens of meat, which is often contaminated (but not enough to make us sick) FWIW.

bump
My WBCs are on a downward trend, and it's freaking me out a bit. They've gone from low-normal during chemo (which ended in November), to lower in March (just after rads ended), to even lower as of this week. I'm on Tamoxifen and supposed to get my last Herceptin next week. . . . I'm glad I found this thread and am not alone, but I wonder whether any of you who had this problem (is it a problem?) have found any answers?
-
mine were also on the low end of normal for a full year after chemo (also had rads). My onc said it just takes a while for your body to bounce back. Last week my WBC was 5.5 - still lower than before all of my bc treatment but going in the right direction.
-
KateB, my MO told me that Herceptin can cause low white counts also. Generally not to the extent of chemo, but it still can lower them.
-
Thanks, Boys62 and kcat2013. My MO has delayed my next Herceptin; she's doing another CBC with a manual slide review in two weeks (when I get my next Zoladex) and we'll go from there. I'm going to worst-case-scenario over here, but that's how my brain works. Damn it all.
-
hi ladies'
Just had a check up today 15 months post chemo and and seven months after I finished Herceptin and Perjeta. For the second time in a row, my WBC count is 2.9. My oncologist is referring me to a hematologist. I'm freaking out! Anyone else had this happen ?
-
Raleighgirl, my oncologist is also a hematologist, and she says that the effects of chemo (aka low WBC) can last for up to TWO YEARS.
Mine came up a bit on the last CBC (bounced up to 3.3 from 3.0), but she's still testing it again in a month.
Try not to worry. I went to all kinds of dark places, only to find out that this is part of what "normal" looks like after chemo.
-
Thanks for the response Kate. That helps put mymind at ease!
-
Hi there, curious as to whether your wbc came back to normal. I too have this 7 weeka post the end of rads only. Very concerned its not due to something else. I am awaited now for test 2 I took this a.m. 1 week post the last test ans seeing my doc at 2:30 p.m.

Tee2069,
hi there! Believe it or not my wbc count is back to normal. Just had it tested as I am miraculously pregnant again, and it's up to 4.5. Was also tested last June and October and it was also back to normal. Took about two years after I finished chemo to get back into the normal range
