Hi,

Yesterday I was diagnosed with multi focal DCIS and the current recommendation to achieve clear margins is a mastectomy.  I am currently researching reputable breast surgeons and plastic surgeons who have experience and a proven track record..and who take insurance.  I am in NYC- and the 3 plastic surgeons that I received a recommendation for do not take insurance.  Any help is greatly appreciated as I am feeling overwhelmed with finding the right team.  I am currently at Weill Cornell, but would consider any of the breast centers here (mt Sinai, nyu, etc). Thank you so much

Dear JKSL, We are sorry to hear of your diagnosis but glad that you reached out to our community. While you are waiting for some responses here you also may try doing a search. Use the tool bar to the left and hit the search icon. Put in NYC breast surgeons. You should find other posts that have similar questions and comments. You might find someone to whom you can contact via private message. Keep us posted. Good luck we will be thinking of you. The Mod

MSKCC has excellent surgeons. Dr Gemignani is DCIS specialist surgeon and Dr Disa is a fantastic plastic surgeon. I am very happy with them both.

Dr. Sacchini at Sloan Kettering did a great job as my breast surgeon. Haven't yet met with a plastic surgeon.

Another vote for Mia Talmor. I did not have a mastectomy, but she did my reduction after a lumpectomy. Also, she has been a pioneer in the direct to implant nipple sparing surgery. I love her as well

I thought my doctor, Dr. William Samson, at Mt Sinai St. Lukes did a really good job with implant reconstruction (although now, 4 years out I'm not happy with my own choice of doing implant recon vs a DIEP. His work was very, very good but implant reconstruction just didn't turn out to be the best for me). My friend's doc, Dr. Mark Smith at Mt. Sinai Beth Israel did a fantastic job with her DIEP surgery. She is very happy with that choice and really liked him and the job he did.

I'm at NYU and they work really well together as a team. My breast surgeon and oncologist are both skilled and caring (and they take most insurance). Surgeon is Dr Shapiro. Don't have a plastic surgeon yet but will go with one at NYU as well, will be having mastectomy late May/early June.

Maya, have you consulted with Nolan Karp? He often teams up with NYU breast surgeons. Ultimately I did not work with him, but he apparently has a good reputation. A little nerdy.

In terms of personality, availability, responsiveness, and technical skill, I still can't say enough about Mia Talmor at Cornell. She often teams up with Alexander Swistel (BS). But, of course, you'd then have to switch hospitals. FWIW, I had my surgery at Cornell but continue to be followed by Freya Schnabel at NYU
