After two biopsies this month just got the bad news that my breat cancer has returned after 8 years. I need a recommendation for a breast surgeon who has experience with patients who have had a lumpectomy followed by radiation. I am interested in doctors in NYC. Radiologist recommended someone but she does not take my plan (BCBS of NJ).

I had a good experience last fall with Virgilio Sacchini at Sloan Kettering. I can't speak to your specific circumstance, which was not mine, but he seemed to do a good job and addressed my concerns. He definitely responds better if you come in with a list of questions, showing you've done a bit of homework and know what to ask. His staff were also very helpful. I think the positive element about the whole Sloan Kettering experience is that it is seamless; the doctors talk with one another, so that if your particular physician has a question, many others can weigh in. Good luck to you and feel free to PM me.

Hi Joni0702, I'm having a double mastectomy in two weeks by Dr. Ma at Saint Luke's hospital. She's the head of breast surgery. Although I haven't had the procedure yet I will say she's absolutely amazing. She came highly recommended by many. Dr. Ma is the head of breast surgery at that hospital and her bed side manner is just what you would expect from a doctor who cares about her patients. Look her up. I'll post again after surgery as well. Good luck on your search and I'll keep you in my prayers. you're not alone.

Hi Joni. Truly sorry you find yourself with a recurrence. May I suggest you research NCI designated cancer centers for your treatment (just google "NCI Designated Cancer Centers). They are all cutting edge with the latest research, treatments, clinical trials, etc. There are 5 such centers in NYC. I chose NYP Columbia for my treatment and have been very happy with my team. My surgeon was Sheldon Feldman, the head of breast surgery, and I can highly recommend him. I don't know if your insurance is one they accept. You would have to check out each hospital individually. You also have an NCI center in NJ, The Cancer Center of NJ at Rutgers in New Brunswick. You may want to check them out, too. Please feel free to PM me if you'd like. I'll be glad to help in any way I can. Best of luck to you!
