First followup mammogram required a biopsy - it was benign!

Options

I had my first 6 month followup mammogram after having had a lumpectomy in October for DCIS Stage 0. I started tamoxifen then, but didn't do radiation since I had a low Oncotype DX score, a very small area of DCIS, and large clean margins.

They found a new area of micro calcifications in the same breast and scheduled me for another biopsy. All I could think was, NOT AGAIN! I had a very good experience the first time around and everything went very well. I definitely didn't want to push my luck by going through it all again. Especially because I wasn't sure if this would count as a recurrence or a missed spot and my RO had said if I had a recurrence, they would definitely want to do radiation then.

I was geared up for the worst (or even worse, it could be invasive this time) and was making myself worry a bunch. I got the call that it was completely benign! I don't know if the tamoxifen had anything to do with that (I read here the calcifications can be detritus left when cancer cells die off?), but I'm just so thankful!

I'm not sure if this will be a regular feature of my mammograms, having to get a biopsy every time, but it's better than the alternative, so I'll take it!
