i keep trying to catch up before posting, but this thread moves too fast! I had my sim last week and start my 33 treatments tomorrow (Thursday). My doc said only aloe or aquafor if needed. I did get tattoos.
I plan to exercise throughout, so I'm glad to see that worked for some of you. Need to get my fitness back-i have goals!
Congrats to all who have finished!
-
Thanks for the welcome Octogirl!
Sim was not at all bad, but it seems that it is acutally done in 2 appointments. So I got my 3 little freckle tatoos, and the set up my positioning on the table. Next week is the BIG appointment with techs and physicists and all that scary stuff. I'm tired just thinking about it, phew! I just keep telling myself that it's only 6 weeks, and 6 weeks out of my entire life is really nothing. I can do this.

Anyone have pressure on the opposite side of their chest after radiation... I'm having rads to right side, woke this morning with pressure feeling on my left breast side. I didn't have recon, so I don't know if it's just fro sleeping heavy on that side last night, or from rads.. I have a different appt time today, since I have a follow up with the breast surgeon... hate worrying about every little thing...
Have a good one, ladies!
-
JerseyGirl.....Yes, I've had that happen just this morning, as a matter of fact. I'm also getting rads to the right breast, but felt pressure in my left breast when I woke up. I know mine is because I slept on my left side all night long, without moving. I'm sure that yours is for the same reason.....no worries!
By the way, I'm in Texas now, but I was born and raised in New Jersey. In the Freehold area. -
Had my sim this morning; it was fine. The breath-gating thing is actually pretty cool, and I appreciate the fact that the tech let me look at my CT scan (I love seeing how things work, including my own body!). Got the three little tattoos and had the mold/bolus made. . . My first appointment isn't until 2/4, since I still have a tiny bit of healing to do from my scar revision, but I feel a lot better now about the whole thing. There's even a saltwater aquarium in the back waiting room that I can gaze at.
The CT scanner freaked me out at first, but now it's no big deal. It's weird how just knowing what something is like removes so much of the anxiety.
And, jeez, gown open in the BACK?! That certainly threw me for a loop!

So many finishers to congratulate:)))) Great photo Jabe. Cardinal, thanks so much for clarification re scars response -- no worries, it can be so easy to get concerned in advance about potential symptoms. I try to channel my Nana.... her famous phrase "don't borrow trouble"
I am creaming like crazy too. As I only have one tube of the American product Miaderm, I branched out and ordered My Girls on amazon, as it is available in Canada, but now the rad nurse wants to see if they will approve it, as every province has different things they allow. It does not seem completely water based, so may not pass:( Etnasgirl -- my boob has always been hotter after tx from the beginning [now 11 of 20] but hasn't gotten any worse yet. My place recommends saline soaks. 2 tsp salt dissolved in 2 litres [quarts] boiled water then cooled to room temp. in a mixing bowl. Lasts a day or two. Dip a clean quarter folded facecloth and lay across breast for 20 min or so, and repeat 3 x day. I also like the cabbage that I finally remembered to buy, and have a strange craving for cabbage rolls.......Catfur - that seems very owwwy, and thanks for sharing photo -- I esp love seeing your name sake in the background:). Octogirl - I have recently made more of an effort to be eating like the Michael Pollan phrase - 'eat real food, not to much, mostly plants' has helped me. Homemade, healthy choices with more vegetable options, and a smaller plate or bowl.

This thread does move right along! Hope everyone has had a good week so far, we're almost to Friday which now in my mind means another week of rads done and not just another week of work done.
I have one of the earliest appointments in the radiation department and there's one lady who is right before me every day. Since I drop my son off at school and drive straight to rads, I'm usually getting to the waiting room before she's even called in so we've gotten to know each other a bit in the last few weeks. Her last treatment is next Wednesday and I was thinking of bringing her a cupcake or something in that morning.
-
@Kate - I always put the gown on wrong. Not sure what difference it even makes. They take it right off anyway.
I know one day I will forget to go into the little dressing room to change and will strip my shirt off in the women's waiting room where the lockers are. I'm sure I wouldn't be the first one.
I have met many people who have touched my heart along the way, and notice that Iam so much more open to people different from me or that I wouldn't have had the patience for before. But seeing them at the MOs office and then the treatment center and now rads, I know they are on the same journey. Like you all on this forum. And I am glad that our paths have crossed.
-
yay Jabe! Is that hair growth I spy under your hat?
-
Whoo hoo!!! Congratulations @Jabe! That is really exciting news!
-
justmaximom....I think bringing her a cupcake would be fantastic!!! How sweet!
-
Done!!! My eldest daughter came home to take my out to celebrate! Good luck to everyone going through it now. I felt like it was harder in the beginning and then just became part of my daily routine. Tomorrow I will probably get off at the wrong exit on the way to work, because I've been on autopilot these past five weeks.
-
WooHoo!!! Congrats PattyMeg!!!
-
not to beat a dead horse but any one who is node positive considering taking Tamoxifen during radiation? I just feel so vulnerable during these few weeks waiting to start rads and I am very concerned with the stray cells in other parts of my body not in the rads zone.

Congrats PattyMeg! How funny, I said this too: "Tomorrow I will probably get off at the wrong exit on the way to work, because I've been on autopilot these past five weeks."
But I haven't. And I don't know about you, but I'm glad to be able to wear dresses to work again since I no longer have to disrobe from the waist up to start my day.
-
PattyMeg- woo-hoo! Congrats on finishing. Love that your daughter came to help you celebrate!
-
congrats, pattymeg!
First treatment went fine. They did more sharpie marks and did xrays, so they said this would be the longest treatment although they'll do xrays once a week. I was surprised and relieved when they said I could put my arms down... I don't know at which point it went from imaging to treatment.
I saw an RO who was covering for my regular one. She said my skin is dry so go ahead and use any lotion for now. I have some lovely stuff from Trader Joe's with aloe and chamomile. I guess they save the aquaphor for later.
-
Congratulations to PattyMeg and Jabe! I know you're smiling right now!
And for the rest of you in treatment another week nearly down! Yay

Hi all,
I've been reading all the posts here, moving over from the September chemo group. Many familiar names! It's looking like I'll begin rads sometime in February. Have a brief appointment with the RO on February 4 but had to beg off doing anything else just yet since I'm still a bit of a mess from chemo. Final dose of Taxol was January 11 but I was sick with fever and congestion the week before. Still have the congestion but it's slowly easing up. I still need to loosen things up from my surgery as well and, of course, developed a bit of lymphedema. I just need a bit more time even though it would be great to get it all over & done with. Also dreading the daily drive since the hospital is 40 minutes away. This seems to be a very long journey.
Anyway, I'm enjoying everyone's helpful hints, especially the cabbage leaves! Who'da thunk it?
-
shopgal--yup that's some hair. I have a nice buzz cut look and am able to go without any head covering as of today!!
-
Jabe if you are brave enough can you post a pic maybe on the hair board?
-
Welcome Welcome YOtis - so sorry you have to be here but glad you found us! So OK to be scared I am pretty sure we all are here.. I had my sim today & was shaking on the table & kept telling myself it was because it was so cold in the room but it was also because I was really nervous. Hang in there!
WooHoo PattyMeg & Jabe - so love the pic
Marijen - never heard of radiation causing pneumonia ???
Shopgal - congrats on the weight loss & hope you have continued success - PS I would have popped him too & eat the cake - sounded very yummy!
Natejordlee & El_Tigre - interesting what your RO's say about boosts being for lumpectomy or BMX without reconstruction .. My RO advised me I am getting 28 regular treatment plus 6 boosts and I had full mastectomy with reconstruction .. Did not ask about the boosts at the time but I will at next RO appt..
Etnasgrl - hope the cabbage helped
Catfurr - thanks for sharing the pic - hope that gets better soon & glad you are over the flu
Jerseygirl - right with you on having to be own advocate look stuff up online, increase worry, always feel like there is more I should know & 2nd guessing the littlest twinge - hang in there - hugs

All - I had my sim today - went well - CT Scans & tatoos - thanks to all for sharing your experience it helped to know what to expect .. I start on Feb 1st - 28 regular treatment plus 6 boosts!! My RO came & advised my heart was in the clear - whew!! I have to say that chemo crushed me & I should be OK with Rads but pretty nervous about it .. Again all the awesome sharing here really helps!! Also thanks for all the stomach virus well wishes - knock on wood but so far so good (thanks god for probiotics) - kids & husband are better but it turned from stomach into horrible sinus cold .. Never ending!
Also had routine OBGYN appt today - onboard to get ovaries removed after rads - can't wait to be done with all!!
Have a great rest of the week & those in the East (US) - hope you got you milk & bread for the blizzard!! Stay safe!
Mary

Mdoc I don't believe I said it causes pneumonia, just thinking it weakens the immune system and possibly the lungs. Easier to catch something
-
shopgal: I posted it just for you! Terrible selfie!!!
-
El Tigre,
I am in the midst of deciding whether to hold off on tamoxifen until after i am done rads, even though my MO says I can start right aways. My main reason is to sort out any sideeffects of rads and treat them, i dont want to confuse the issue by also dealing with side effects of the tamoxifen. I have heard that chemo continues to work in our bodies well after treatment is finished-i dont know how long but i wouldnt think a few weeks would be concerning. Just my thoughts.
-
Hi to everyone. So no stripper dreams yet! Well we will see. Well back at work things continue to pile up. I am doing well but it is mentally draining. I agree that rads are more difficult than I expected.
-
thank you everyone for your responses.
I hate this disease. But it taught me to appreciate the little things more. Today I appreciated a clean workspace
-
Hi All! I'll be starting rads in February too. 2/15 30 treatments.Whole breast and lymph nodes. My MO wants me to start Arimidex at the same time. He said there's no evidence not to. The end is in sight Phew! It's nice to see familiar names.
-
Anyone else get TIRED during rads?
This is only my first week, but it hit me yesterday, really out of nowhere. It's a different tired than I ever experienced before.....it's more like a totally drained feeling and no matter how much sleep or rest that I get, I still feel it.
Last night, I had to go to bed at 7:30, I just couldn't keep my eyes open any longer. I woke up this morning, when the alarm went off at 5:30.....still drained, still tired. UGH!
I plan on upping my exercise, hope that will help.....but just wanted to see if anyone else experiences this? -
El Tigre, I'm in total agreement with Kimmer. I held off until yesterday, a week after completing my rads. I didn't want to confuse the side effects and wanted a little time to heal. My first MO said to wait and I didn't see the second MO until after rads were over
Etnasgrl, I used exercise to minimize fatigue and felt it really helped. Fatigue would hit me around 8 in the evening and I'd be in bed by 10. I'm usually an 11:00 pm bedtime person. I never felt tired during the day thank goodness since I work full time. Good luck!
