2nd opinion and genetecist results

All again all!
Had my second opinion today and got my BRCA results as well today. Much to
my surprise, I was negative. With such a high family history, I was fully
expecting it to be positive. That really made my day as that was a big fear mostly
because my daughter and of course any future grandchildren! As for my
appointment, I think it went well. I REALLY liked the breast surgeon. She
recommended BMX for a few reasons. One, my DSIC being over 7 cm and grade 3,
and because she said I have the most dense breasts she has ever seen (and they
are 34DDD) and she says that the risk of not catching things on mammo's and
MRI's is very high.  She said looking at my films she wouldn't be
surprised if my DCIS was even more widespread than they can see and of course I
am really concerned about it being invasive. I was already leaning that
direction because I know the risks of having dense breasts and I also did not
want to have to do radiation and tamoxifan. To my surprise, she still wants me
to do tamoxifan for 5 years. I am ER and PR + and she said that she feels
taking it will almost eliminate any future risk. Any thoughts on that?

For the time being I am feeling at peace. It will most likely be a month or so until surgery so I have a few buffer weeks, but my breast surgeon really put at ease! Thanks for reading!

    Hi Mckaylaleigh:

Good news on the BRCA test results! You should obtain a copy of the test results for your own review and records, if you do not already have one.

I don't recall if you had bilateral disease or not (if not, it is prophylactic on one side), but it sounds like you are more comfortable with this second opinion.

Regarding electing mastectomy to "avoid radiation", it may be more accurate to say "with reasonable hope of avoiding radiation". This is because although radiation is not usually required after mastectomy, occasionally, certain pathology findings may lead to a recommendation of radiation.

The tamoxifen question would be something to discuss with a Medical Oncologist ("MO") after the results of the surgical pathology are in, and you have a definitive diagnosis (pure DCIS or something else), which may affect your risk profile or how you feel about it. I insisted on meeting an MO after surgery, because endocrine therapy is the area of expertise of the MO.

    Good luck!

Thanks so much BarredOwl. My left breast would be preventative. You are right though, there is still a chance of radiation, keeping my fingers crossed it won't be needed!
