Lumpectomy Lounge....let's talk!

KarenR0618 Welcome! You're in the best place that you don't want to be in. We're a very caring, warm, comforting and informative group and a tad nuts. While you certainly will be fine, keep in mind that even a lumpectomy when you do it outpatient (as most of us do), it IS major surgery. You'll want to rest as much as possible for a couple weeks if you can. I'm not saying don't do anything but allow plenty of time to rest so your body can heal. I found the surgery and radiation to be easy. I was a bit fatigued after radiation but not a problem. I'm sure you'll have more questions - ask away!

Marijen, no I haven't sold my house yet because it isn't up for sale until March 1st. It is going to take me that long to declutter and downsize. 2400 sq ft of 48 years worth of stuff (we only moved once in our marriage and that was after 1 year). There's a lot I don't want to take to my new home (and likely won't have room for). I want to wave a magic wand and have it all done.
1Step, you just answered one question - when do you take it. I was undecided. I think I'll try nighttime. I take most of my meds at breakfast. I now take Benadryl and it doesn't make me sleepy. Does it really work 24 hours? So often a prescription 24 hours turns out to be 18-20 hours. Thanks for the info.
HUGS!

Welcome Karen, Sorry you need to be here but so glad you found this wonderful group. Peggy is our resident cheerleader and go to gal. I don't know what we would do without her. If you are having your sentinal node biopsied along with your lumpectomy than you might want a couple of button up shirts or pjs and some easy to pull up pants for the first couple days. Be sure to have ice packs on hand and have your food/drinks or meds down low enough to reach without stretching too high. Otherwise you will do fine. Radiation wasn't bad. I had 33 whole breast treatments along with all of my nodes. Just take all of this one day at a time.
-
KarenR0618 - so sorry you're here, but know there is a lot of info on these boards that will help you.
I will throw this in FWIW, I'm a big believer in second opinions. I think if I'd been diagnosed with DCIS, I would be an even bigger believer. If you can at all get a second opinion, I would do it.

'analysis found that EE2 has a lower predicted concentration in U.S. drinking water than natural estrogens from soy and dairy products and animal waste used untreated as a farm fertilizer. And that all humans, (men, women and children, and especially pregnant women) excrete hormones in their urine, not just women taking the pill. Some research cited in the report suggests that animal manure accounts for 90 percent of estrogens in the environment. Other research estimates that if just 1 percent of the estrogens in livestock waste reached waterways, it would comprise 15 percent of the estrogens in the world's water supply.'

Amaree - Im so sorry to hear of your news!!!! and can understand how very difficult it must be. You are a very switched on young lady, so based on those results, your treatment plan sounds exactly right. Definitely have that meeting with your BS and ask everything. Hugs to you sweet!!!
Hawaiimom - Sounds like you made all the right decisions for you so far, I have a different situation, but also have to make that decision of mx and havent reached it yet. Im not ready to, mine isnt urgent, and can be monitored. I just feel like I couldnt face anymore surgery right now and mentally coming through Chemo...I need to heal and get on with my life. Im just worried if I get recurrence again or in the other breast, its more surgery and chemo again...I dont want chemo again so that leaves me with thinking of mx. Good luck with it.
Peggy - Hope all goes well with your tests!!
-
Peggy, really? You think you will be done by March?
-
HawaiiMom, to be honest if I had ILC I would have BMX or at least UMX. ILC can be hard to detect and 6CM is a pretty good size lump. You might check in with the ladies on the ILC forum for opinions as well. Do you know your HER2 status yet?
-
Been trying to get adjusted to my new glasses today...much stronger prescription. Not sure if it is in any part due to the chemo? Anyway, feel a little like this, haha!
-
Marijen, that wasn't nice! I hope to be done enough that the house will not look stuffed to the gills. My realtor said having boxes packed is okay. But the closets already look pretty good. I am not packing everything. I'm having the movers do the fine china and a lot of other stuff. I'm doing books and clothes primarily. If there's a saint for cleaning I think I need to invoke him/her

Are you really going to haul the tabletop hairdryer to WA?

Well I am happy to report that I got some news back today and stitches removed from my lumpectomy. The type of BC I have is pure Tubular. My surgeon over the past 10 years has had only 1 to 2 cases of this cancer for it is rare form 2%-4%. Wide margins and nothing in the nodes. I don't have my Her status yet for that will take another 3 weeks. My next stop on this unplanned journey will be the medical oncologist to figure out if radiation will be require or hormone treatment. My guess is I am sure I will get hormone therapy for I am positive for both. Know a little bit more will now add to a more restful sleep tonight.
-
Hi,
I had my first appt. with the MO and RO today. I like them both, which is important to me as I'm a relationship person. Oncotype dx test was ordered. I should know in 2 weeks if I'll be having chemo or go straight to radiation. MO said my outlook was good as far as node involvement and strong ER, but my relatively young age and the size of the tumor could work against me as far as chemo goes. RO is super nice and we talked about length of treatment. My choices are 6.5 weeks, 4 weeks, or a one week intensive one that involves my BS. She didn't recommend the one week one. What kind did you all choose? The cancer was on my left side and very close to my chest wall, so I'm nervous about my heart. We talked a lot about how I'll be positioned to minimize any risk to my heart. Lastly, I knew about the radiation tattoos, but forgot about them. When I text dh about them he said he'd buy me a Harley.
So the waiting has started again. This dx has given me ample opportunities to become a more patient person. Haven't quite got there yet.
I got sad while I was in the oncology waiting room. I've been pretty upbeat since the dx, but that waiting room is a special kind of depressing. One funny tidbit is I over heard 2 older women talking. One said "you know what I do before I come here?" and the other lady replied "pray?" and the first one says "yeah, that too,, but I take a xanax". LOL. You go girl!
I haven't read all the updates. Don't really have it me tonight. I kind of feel like curling up in a ball and crying. I think I'll do that and feel better tomorrow. I hope everyone is doing well and keeping warm. It's frickin' cold here in Chicago! My lucky Dh is in Miami for the night for work. I should have stowed away on his flight!

Sending you hugs Gemma! I agree with you, it's so important to like the doctors you're working with. My radiation was 30 treatments/ six weeks. Interesting that you have alternatives, since none of my doctors ever suggested anything but six weeks. My tumor was also deep on the left side, though as your RO may have mentioned, they will coach you on how to breathe and hold during treatment so that the treatment area is held away from your heart.
-
Gemma - It is hard!! Hope you get a reasonable sleep tonight! Dont think Id entertain the 1 week either. My rads tattoos were only like 3 tiny dots?? is that the same over there? I did rads over 5.5 weeks. I think thats the usual for most people, as in the longer one as it is cumulative. Its in the 90s here!!!! LOL stay strong!
-
Mel - yeah they are tiny, but so far I am tattoo free, so this will be a first. He was teasing me saying it will make me a badass and he'll buy me harley to match my new persona. I have a good friend in Oz. I love looking at her FB photos. Summer time for you, but so cold here!
-
Hi Peggy, as you say, I'll be "in your pocket" on Monday regarding your tests!
-
Gemma - Ohhhh!!! haha!!! Im tattoo free too, well apart from the dots! and this journey will change everything about you...so he's not far wrong..you'll become a badass!!! LOL Yes summertime for us in the 90's here in Melbourne, wheres your GF?
-
Marijen, it isn't exactly a tabletop hair dryer. It's a regular blow dryer with a vinyl hood attachment. So it's not huge and yes, it is going. When you totally lack talent with hair you gotta take what you can manage
I think you need to come help me!
HUGS!!!

Peggy, I found your saint~!
Saint Martin De Porres, the first black saint of the Americas (b. 1569, Peru), would be come well known for his humility and help of the poor and in hopeless causes. He is often depicted with a broom, and even affectionately referred to as the 'Saint of the Broom,' because he considered all work to be sacred, no matter how menial.
-
BrightSocks, how confusing for you. More waiting
Great news on the margins and nodes!!
Gemma, I had 33 radiation treatments. Left side. I felt (and feel) that the RO is going to his best to make sure nothing is damaged and the cancer is killed. Gotta trust him. Peachy mentioned holding your breath during treatments but that is not always an option. They tested me and found that it didn't make a difference. So while it is an option, it isn't for everyone. Definitely put in for the Harley! I love the IDEA of a Harley but I know I'd be a hazard (I can't manage hand brakes on a bicycle - tell me how good I'd be with a motorcycle. Right. Awful).
MelClarity, my tats were 3 little dots too. But that is enough to brag about to my oldest son who has REAL tattoos! Gives me a bit of "biker girl" attitude!
HUGS!!!

Mel - She's in Sydney. We worked for the same company. 20 years ago she spent 6 months in Boston and we became fast friends. By happenstance 15 years ago, she ended up being in Boston around my wedding day for a training session. I walked out of the church, and there she was! It was an awesome surprise! After her training session she and her DH stayed at my house while we were on our honeymoon. In 2010, she was living in London and I was able to catch up with her while my husband was attending Rock 'n Roll fantasy camp for a week. I loved meeting her family. Her birthday was 2 days ago and I sent her a message a few days before it. I told her of my dx. She was having a really hard time as her Dad passed away 4 years to the day I sent the message. Having her Dad die so close to her birthday had really put a damper on the day. I was happy to hear a few days later that her celebration was "gorgeous" and that her dilemma with her birthday seems to be resolving itself.
Both of us feel strongly that despite the quantity of time we spend together, our friendship is pretty special. I think God puts special people in our lives sometimes, and if we are wise, we recognize them!

Peggy, I'll get a side-car and you can ride with me!
-
Poodles, that is really funny. Thanks!! There was (still is?) a high school in Detroit called St Martin de Porres. That's fine but it was known for athletic recruiting violations BIG TIME. The best team money could buy. Whether it was true or not was irrelevant - we all believed it. So I've heard of him, just didn't know what he represented. Hopeless causes is definitely me! And a broom....let me see.....I'm sure I must have one....but what do you do with it??
HUGS!!
-
Gemma, that works for me!! My best friend and her hubby have a Harley - she even had one but sold it for some reason. #1 son has a Harley. Where are we going to go??
HUGS!

Bright, wonderful news about Lobular and sorry you have to wait on your HER2 status. I know waiting is not good for the nerves. Gemma, crying is good for getting the emotions out. I am sorry your DH isn't home though. The first time I wanted to cry was the first time I was in the Radiation treatment room for my first TX. I had 33 treatments and my RO said the computer does the treatment plan to minimize damage to heart and lungs. Lol, Peggy I think Marijen is volunteering to come help you move.
-
You're only one state away from now, but did I see you are moving to OR? I better get on it or I'll have a hell of a commute to pick you up! When do you move? My DD is auditioning for a 3 week ballet camp at interlochen in NW MI this summer. I mapped it.. 5 hour drive for me.
-
Bright socks - fantastic news on the clean margins and no node involvement. Good luck with the rest of discovery. I hope you can get a plan in place that your comfortable with!
