Who do I contact for results?

edited January 2016 in Waiting for Test Results

Age 37, fibrocystic breasts. I had an initial mammogram and ultrasound 6 months ago, and a spot was found that was called "probably benign" with a recommended follow up ultrasound in 6 months. That was today.

The ultrasound technician was very formal and not overly friendly, and found the spot, taking multiple images. Then she very shortly said "ok you're all done, leave the gown on the table" and walked out of the room.

Being scared and nervous, I didn't know who to ask what comes next. Do I call the radiologist? My gynecologist? Will someone call me? I don't want to be a bother and call too soon, and I don't know how all this works, but I don't want to wait around forever being scared.

    Hi Kweller78:

Because it may vary from place to place, don't hesitate to call the facility where you had the ultrasound today and ask them your questions and when you may expect the next step to occur.

By the way, please don't draw any inferences from the demeanor of the ultrasound technician. They are trying to get good and thorough data, so most of them wear a look of intense concentration. They are not supposed to discuss the results or what they might think, because they are not radiologists.

Hoping for good results for you.

Thank you! I did call the facility and they told me the results had been faxed to my doctor. Waiting on a return call from the doc now.

I just wish the tech could have been a little more friendly after were were done - something like "Ok, the results will be faxed to your doctor this afternoon, you should call them tomorrow" or something like that. She walked out of the room before I could even open my mouth! I know they see tons of patients each day so it's a very quick business transaction, but for me, it was a new experience. I guess I'm just overly sensitive because I'm scared out of my mind!

Thank you for your help and reassuring words!

It makes such a difference in your experience if you know the person taking care of you cares. Some people can put themselves in other people's shoes and some just can't.

    Of course you are scared.

Hope you get totally normal results!
