So, I was dx'd with DCIS in December. I have been researching, and searching. I had a second opinion at today in Philly I have received GREAT news from UPENN today. The surgeon, Dr. Carla Fisher, states she could do a lumpectomy, nipple sparing in under one hour with possibility of local with moderate sedation or LMA, (laryngeal mask airway). The first surgeon, I went to said definitely over two hours, not sure if she could spare nipple..and definitely needed general. The first surgeon also proposed (initially) a unilateral mastectomy with lymph node removal and removal of nipple. The caveat..the first surgeon with the more aggressive approach can get me in sooner, January 18th. The second, February 3rd @ UPENN with Dr. Carla Fisher. She did recommend radiation and Tamoxifen. Because my issue is multifocal, contained in the same quadrant..I am still a candidate for a wider excisional biopsy..according to Dr. Fisher. Please, ladies..I am at a loss of what to do. Does anyone here feel waiting 3 more weeks is critical..?

Your sage advice is truly appreciated. Thank you all in advance.

Karen.

kar, I would say it's not critical, but I am not a Dr, so, it's a good question to be answered by your Dr's. Since DCIS is non-invasive, I doubt a 3 week wait will change the outcome. But, if you can't mentally and emotionally stand the wait, then do what's best for you. I had to wait longer than I wanted to for my LX, bc I wanted a specific Dr...and, as of right now, I don't think it changed a thing! Good luck with your decisions.
