On Friday, my oncologist called with the good news that my biopsy was B9. Today I received a call from the radiologist (who within 5 minutes called my home, cell phone and work numbers numerous times and then told my son about my biopsy which he was not authorized to do so. saying that although the results were B9 all agreed I should have an MRI guided biopsy. I asked why they just didn't do that to begin with. Do they not trust the B9 findings or did they biopsy the wrong tissue? I distinctly remember one of the radiologists saying that if the results were B9 they would want me to have another MRI in 6 months (the whole reason for the biopsy was a spot on an MRI in December). Now this has changed to well, we want to be sure which makes me think they goofed - especially since the doctor kept sticking me with the needle and coming up without breast tissue.

I know it is better to be sure but it really gets me angry that I have to go through all of this again not to mention the cost (I have a high deductible plan and have to pay the first $3,000 out of pocket). Money is not really the problem - it is that I have to go through a second biopsy when either the first one should have been done correctly or I should have had an MRI guided one to begin with.

Having been through this myself -- my discordant biopsy was followed by a surgical excision -- could I just suggest that if you don't have confidence or trust in your team, this is going to be a really hard road ahead. I wish I could have gone back and gotten a second opinion and maybe switched my teams, because every mistake or complication that has come along since that fateful day has made me feel even more concerned and less trusting. It's a crummy place to be. I know they are probably all wonderful at their jobs, but most days I wonder if they know what they are doing. It's not them, it's me. But it started in exactly the place you are right now... wondering what the heck is going on and noticing every mis-step. Which we are all human so there are bound to be some.

I was told similar - only I was informed I had to have a MRI guided biopsy, then told I had to have ultrasound guided biopsy. So far - first mammogram (told it was negative, but then got a letter from my insurance saying I had been approved for breast MRI?, breast MRI, ultrasound, ultrasound biopsy with titanium pin placement, mammogram and now MRI again! All of this since April.

I ended up having a B9 biopsy, however, the interventional radiologist who did my ultrasound needle guided biopsy informed me they wanted to repeat the MRI to make sure they got the right area. Not because she was worrried about making a mistake, but because the images vary slightly from MRI to ultrasound (and it was a small area.)

When do you have to have the MRI guided biopsy? Hang in there.

Hi Joni. They probably don't like the way it looks despite the benign results. Sometimes no matter how the biopsy turns out they want the lump out. Just keep in mind they do have to prove you have bc or you don't ! Also want to make sure you are being treated at a university based teaching hospital. You might want to get a second opinion. Good luck and keep us posted....
