    Hi go12:

Due to widespread DCIS, I did not have a choice between lumpectomy and mastectomy. However, here is an excellent post from Beesie about mastectomy and lumpectomy considerations, which many find to be helpful:

Lumpectomy vs Mastectomy Considerations (scroll up a bit to Beesie's post of Jun 20, 2013 12:00PM)

I saw the breast surgeon on 1/6/16, after meeting with her I'm scheduled for a lumpectomy on 2/2/16 and sentinel lymph node removal, followed by radiation therapy. Due to the size of my tumor ( a little over an inch) she felt no need to remove the breast. All of this is extremely overwhelming.

Hi I just wanted to post a reassuring message to anyone just diagnosed with idc. I am now five years on. I remember the devastation I felt back then not to mention the confusion and morbid thoughts. I had idc over a wide area of left breast so had to have mastectomy. The pathology showed 1mm invasive and one lymph node. ER and HR2. Six sessions of chemo 18 doses of Herceptin. Tamoxifen for five years. I had no choice concerning the mastectomy. My sister was diagnosed last year ( not familial although my mum was diagnosed at 82 ) and she did have lumpectomy with no other treatment. The mastectomy meant no radiotherapy. It all went well. Looking back I should have had immediate reconstruction but I just wanted the breast off and chemo started. Having a prosthesis is a real nuisance uncomfortable and size of remaining breast changes with weight fluctuation so hard to keep them equal! My advice overall live for the moment and easy to say I know but all the worrrying and crying I did just wadsed precious time and didn't help. Good luck everyone.
