Thanks everyone!!! Hey geewhiz, I don't think you lose the base all that fast and sometimes it's better to have the break. At least that is what our coach told us. Apparently there is a book out there called Personal Best or something like that which chronicles athletes and olympians who were sidelined for months before competition because of injuries and couldn't train but when they performed they all PRed. I haven't read the book yet but it sounds like a great read and maybe will help your spirits!!

    Be well,

    Renee

    Hi Everyone,

Races have been updated! I know it was long overdue and I apologize for that. Thanks to everyone for the congratulations, too. I'm starting to get my energy back but we've been hit with cold after cold in our house so that hasn't helped :s I think we are all starting to be on the mend.

I have to say I'm glad that BCO does not have a limit on how long a starting post can be, did you see how long it is right now? That means we've ran a lot of races and did a bunch of other running in between. I noted that someone asked if a 2016 thread would be started. I would recommend that you do since I cannot commit to updating the main post on a regular basis this year. I've added any races that were mentioned in this thread even if they were in 2016 so anyone who starts up the new thread can just copy and past those.

    Happy new year everyone!

My goals are in place!! Chicago 2016, Boston 2017, and then London, Berlin, and Tokyo to follow in no particular order. I am going make this happen.

I say all of that after struggling with three miles today LOL. I gotta get back on the wagon somehow I guess. Happy Running and New Year.

Happy New Year all and way to go Rseman! Fantastic job at NYC and fun events on the horizon!

And more generally to all - love reading all of your posts. This is such a positive group : )

If there's a 2016 list, please put me down for the Coastal Delaware Running Festival Half, April 24.

    Happy new year all!

I survived the WDW Half. It was a reckoning because no training. Literally ran 5k twice since the Dumbo Double Dare. Stupid cold + asthma knocked me out for six weeks in October and November, and other random excuses. So, all things considered, 2:51 was pretty okay. I walked a lot. When I consider my time and walking through the self-care zone for nothing more than precautionary tylenol, when all these faster people are wrapped up in saran wrap and ice, I am okay with the trade off. My feet hurt, which they usually don't after, so I think it's time to escalate my passive surveillance of shoe availability. And I really need to do more training....

Hello - I just got started on running/walking the Disney races this past summer. I did the DL 5K in Sept and then Capt America 10K. I had been diagnosed with DCIS in September and had a lumpectomy right after the Capt America 10K in November. (However, I am also a 17(+) survivor of Stage 2 IDC from when I was 23 - I am now 41. Back then, in 1998, I had a lumpectomy, lymph node removal and a year of chemo and radiation treatment.) My pathology came back from the lumpectomy this past November with the margins not clear, and so my physicians are insisting that the only real option is bilateral mastectomy. Next month I'm scheduled for a bilateral mastectomy with no reconstruction - after nearly 20 years, I just want to be done with it and get on with living.

I was signed up to do SW Half this weekend as well as the Princess Half next month - I've deferred both to next year. I was thinking of doing Tinker Bell in May. Maybe you all can help give me some advice on how soon do you think it's wise to be in a crowd to do any kind of running/walking? If I signed up for just the Tinkerbell 5K in May, that would be 10 weeks after the masectomy in February. Would that even be an option, or should I just plan for the DL races in September? Any suggestions are welcome!

Dear cupcaker, Welcome to the community. We are so glad that you joined and posted your question here. While you are waiting for some responses you also may want to check out this link about Mastectomy and you also may want to consider posting in the surgery forum where others talk about and post questions related to surgery. Keep us posted and good luck. The Mods

Hi cupcaker! Welcome to the happiest thread in BCO. We should probably have a 2016 thread but I'm sensing that none of us has the energy to start it and commit to updating the header...

I did the inaugural Tink Half 6 weeks post DIEP. That is about the most intense thing I can think of. Because of the nature of the DIEP, moving the porch up to the balcony, I was not even able to straighten up until the Friday preceding the Sunday run. I walked an hour once a week on a treadmill at 4mph, stooped over and holding the side rails. That was my training. Because of the intense surgery of the DIEP and the jiggling of running, I did not run a step until that Friday, and I ran the first 15 minutes of the Neverland 5K and walked/ran the rest. But darn it, I ran bits and pieces of that Half, and finished in 3:06 or something.

I had previously done the 5th Disneyland Half at 10 weeks post mastectomy. The problem was not at all the mastectomy side, but the jiggle of the other DD side and the different weight of the prosthesis side and the strain on my shoulders. I was so glad to get the second side mastectomy and even things out with the DIEP. (However no-recon bilateral mastectomy was a very close second choice. I feel so much more athletically capable without DD dead weights.)

Having the run to look forward to will get you up out of bed sooner after the surgery. Just don't do a lot of arm pumping while the drains are in, or you'll keep filling the bottles and they'll never take the darned things out. Take it easy with the drains in. Slow walking to clear the anaesthetic gas out of your lungs and clear your head is a great idea. Don't fear the dreadmill if it's easier to control how "far" you walk and how fast and how hard and what temperature, etc. Pamper yourself and celebrate doing it.

If you are in reasonable shape going into the surgery, there is no reason you could not keep the runDisney 16 min/mi pace at least walking even if you did Princess 2016, but Tink at 10 weeks is as near a sure thing as you can get, and you could very well do faster. I was maybe 1 min / km slower than my previous pace for over a YEAR after. Just hang in there. Obviously, listen to your body. This is not the time to fret over your pace. Suspend the mind games about just running one more street light before the walk break. Walk when you need to walk. Celebrate being there, and finishing. Enjoy the free banana.

And they're still marking Disneyland Paris Half (September) as available ;)

Thank you so much goldlining for your detailed response! I so appreciate it! That's amazing that you completed the Tink Half after having DIEP. Knowing that has given me the confidence to register for the 2016 Tink Half. You are so spot on when you said that having this race to look forward to will get me moving after surgery. That's exactly what I'm hoping for. I'm going to continue with my training in the the next few weeks before my surgery in February. I have been looking at the Paris race - I've even thought it would be fun to do a singles cruise in the Mediterranean and then go do Paris DL. :D

I'm fortunate enough to have a business event in Spain the week before DLPHM so I will just catch a train to Paris on Friday after the event ends and I'll already be in the time zone. Registration for DLHM / Dumbo Double Dare should open soon too. But sadly, no triple bonus medal - just the Coast to Coast and Castle to Chateau.

Okay, I feel I've made enough use of the support here over the years that I should step up and do the thread maintenance this year. (Hope I can figure out how, and live up to the terrific job done by oncearunneralwaysarunnier and predecessors.)

Please follow and post over at :

    2016 Running Thread

Please don't add more stuff on 2015.

    See you over there.

Just browsing again, haven't been on forever..... I'm trying to run again. Radiation has kicked my butt. Tomorrow I'm actually joining a couch to 5k to get me moving. It's not the running, it's the joint pain, I am having a horrible time with my knee, leg and foot, up and down stairs is painful. I'm actually starting PT on Tuesday to see if it will help. HAPPY RUNNING EVERYONE.
