I am scheduled for my PET scan next week, then I will see the oncologist after that. I do know about the dietary restrictions etc. 24 hours prior to the scan, but I wondered if anyone else started the restrictions sooner. I can't restrict the exercise sooner as I have a clinical day at the hospital before that (I am a student nurse) but I can control the diet.

I was not given any restrictions before my PET.

How did your results turn out Kicks? In school they stressed to us to have patients completely void of any sugar. You can not consume any kind of sugar for 24 hours prior to the procedure. I just wondered if it is more accurate if you were even more cautious with the sugar consumption.

I have had PET scans every 3-4 months for 4 years. No food or drink 12 hours prior. That's it

So you guys aren't being told no sugar? WOW that amazes me. So ok, then my 24 hours should be just fine. The clinic told me but it is also something we learned in school. Very interesting. Thanks all.

I had an area along my lower right jaw that did 'light up' on PET. A biopsy of was done that afternoon with path. report next morning - 'nothing'was there. That was 6+ yrs ago and no issues since. I had already had Bone Scan, CT and MRI which had shown nothing outside of known IBC areas.

Nothing was ever said about 'sugar' intake. It would be almost impossible to not take in 'sugar' in any form as it is so diverse. I was told that PET will show any 'inflamation' and the area needs to be checked if it is another area that already hasn't been checked.

So no - I was given no restrictions. Uess a total fast - it would be basically impossible to eliminate any/all forms of sugar.

I was told no sugar or carbs the day before and lots of hydration.

If you eat only proteins and very low carb vegetables it can be done (I have done completely no carb diets before), so it is only 24 hours, so shouldn't be difficult at all, but I wondered if longer would prevent false positives.

I was told no carbs / sugar for three days and no excercise for 48 hours..  The injection picks up on sugar in your body hence no carbs. Good luck.

Thanks Bevin, I don't know that I can avoid exercise for 48 hours (I was told 24) but I will do my best, but 3 days sounds reasonable for dietary restrictions, I just don't want false positives basically, areas of concern that do not need to be concerning.

I was told no carbs and limited exercise the 24 hours before scan day.

So let's make a deal...I eat nothing but red meat and sit behind my computer the day before, you promise my scan will be negative. I'm up with that.

HAHA Sbelizabeth, I wish I could make that kind of deal as well, I will eat meat, sit on my computer and do nothing for a few days in order to have a clean scan. I am good with that.
