Ajinkya, did the drs say it is a internal mammary node? How did they find it, mri, us or during surgery?

I had an enlarged internal mammary node that showed up on my breast mri. My onc. Sent me for a pet scsn to confirm if it was suspicious or reactive. If it lit up, he would order a biopsy, which is the only way to confirm malignancy. From everything that I have learnt about internal mammary nodes, this is what I have gathered. They are still considered as having affected anxillary lymph nodes, local occurrence. However, several studies have shown that the prognosis is less favourable but not dire ( that depend on so many other factors).  Also, depending on location, the node may not be removed through surgery and treatment would rely on chemo and radiation.

That being said, I see many ladies on this board that had affected internal mammary nodes, they are cancer free, living well and have no recurrences after many years. Hope this helps.

You definitely need to know where the lymph node is located. I have lymph node involvement that is internal mammary, but due to a lymph node under my sternum being involved, my cancer is stage IV. I have met several women, in the same boat as me, that have gone through treatment and are great! One woman was diagnosed stage IV, 37yrs ago, and has had no recurrence. So many factors play a part in our treatments and recoveries. It's really hard to say what to expect unless you can find out all the information in your mom's diagnosis
