Remove ovaries vs taking Aromasin?

Options

Hi All,

I'm 51 and don't need my ovaries any longer - so just wondering if having them removed would get me out of taking my aromasin? Or maybe this is just wishful thinking? Thanks for any feedback!

That is not exactly how it works. It isn't the ovaries producing estrogen at our age that is the problem Aromasin works by blocking estrogen that your body makes outside of your ovaries, especially post menopausal. Our bodies continue to make somebestrogen by converting androge.

In particular, aromatase is responsible for the aromatization of androgens into estrogens. The aromataseenzyme can be found in many tissues including gonads, brain, adipose tissue, placenta, blood vessels, skin, and bone, as well as in tissue of endometriosis, uterine fibroids, breast cancer, and endometrial cancer.

Thank you for the feedback Melissa, I was afraid it wasn't that simple!

Hi luckylegs, in fact you need to be menopausal, or have no ovaries, in order to take Aromasin at all. Else you take tamoxifen. Having your ovaries out is to prevent having to take Lupron. :-)

I'm sorry if Aromasin is treating you badly. If the side-effects are really awful you could try Femara instead. it's also an aromatase inhibitor, but might have different/less/worse side-effects.
