    Happy, happy birthday Patoo

    Happy New Year. Best wishes for all things good in 2016. Spending NYE my favorite way....quite night at home, just like any other day of the week. I made Whole wheat veggie pesto pizza and salad for dinner. Then we went for our nightly week. DH has been going with me on my daily walks all week It has been nice. But that is coming to an end as winter break is over and I'm back to work on Monday. I haven't done as much walking as I've hoped this week....no more walking than I do on work days, but maybe that's cuz i walk more at work!!! BUT my 3 walks/day have been better. Its been so cold this week and last. In the teens at night and in thr mornings. But is supposed to warm up this week-end to the 40's during the day... a heat wave compared to this week!!

    My husband and I went for a 55 minute walk today. Cold but sunny. I feel good to start off the new year with a good long walk.

    Those are great resolutions, badatusernames. Keep up the good work.

    Cubbie I hope to be that fit older lady that everyone admires. I have a similar inspiring lady who motivates me.

    DF glad you arrived at a treatment plan that makes you happy.

    Hi friends- I have been away, but finally got back to the gym today for 45 mins of resistance training! There were loads of people at the front desk trying to sign up, the gym itself was not too crowded. I expect it will be busy there starting on Monday!

    Can somebody explain fitbit? It looks as if you (one) has to purchase more than one piece of technology. I am thoroughly confused by the advertisements I see.

    My New Years Resolutions

    Laugh more than I do now

    Be kind to myself as Tamoxifen nearly destroyed me and is still leaving my system

    Keep working on my weight loss goals

    Do what I need to do to get through a lumpectomy plus breast reduction surgery and an ultrasound for uterine spotting

    Re-assess my fitness plan after surgery

    Then, without these heavy breasts that keep me in chronic neck and back pain, get as active as possible doing physical activities and exercise I enjoy!

    Happy New Year everyone! I could not have imagined a more fabulous way to start the year than the perfect ski. The sun shone and the weather was perfect if nippy. On top of everything else, my favorite trails were open and groomed, so about 8 miles of skiing. Last part was on alpine trails, so the toughest part. Here are two pictures. - Claire

    Had a great Date Day/Evening with DH. . .hiking, shopping (at 70% off), dinner and sightseeing all at our local gardens which boasts the largest lights display in the SE.

    I just saw a meta-analysis of studies that included data on exercise and reduction in breast cancer risk. Meta-analysis is not as strong as clinical trial results, but this review covered health data from a very large number of women.

    Bottom line is that the meta-analysis showed an inverse risk between breast cancer and exercise. Exercise reduces risk for recurrence and cancer deaths.

    I gotta get moving as fast as I can. At least I was able to pick up a little around the house and do some laundry. Not much, but I still feel slammed by the Tamoxifen.

    Happy New Year! Today I had my parents, sister and her family over for NY lunch. We had a lot of laughs and way too much food. My DD is having a slumber party tonight. She and her friends have been watching movies. I decided to get my move on, but it was way too cold so I had to get on the treadmill. 4.5 miles to burn off all the New Year's cheer.

    Decisionfreak- there is a lot of new information coming out in the media about exercise keeping your immune system strong. So it makes sense there are similar alignments with exercise and BC. I have always seen exercise as a must do.

    Claire, that looks photoshopped! Beautiful!

    Today, I splashed around in the ocean with my DH and nephew. We also walked to and from the beach (one mile total). Was planning on hand weights as well, but NY dinner prep got in the way. Least I burned some Caloriesrunning around the kitchen!

    I feel conflicted about the exercise cancer prevention research. I enjoy exercise, so it's easier to do than figure our the 10787 conflicting dietary recommendations. Yet, I was a competitive athlete for 8 years and still got cancer at 28 so that makes me kinda mad!

    Bad at User- my sister has always been a super athlete. Track and field star in high school and college. Marathon runner well into her 50s. She had bc at the same time I did, got her dx a few months before I did at age 62. She never thought she would get cancer. I think she is mad about it too.

    A friend of mine who was particularly freaked out by my dx told me "I cannot believe you got cancer, you have always focused on being so healthy with exercise and nutrition." I told her there are no guarantees in life we won't have health problems, even if we take very good care of ourselves. I told her with bc, early detection is key and to keep up with the mammos. Part of good self care.

    Decision- glad to be able to help. You have much on your plate to deal with. Know you are doing the best you can every day.

    When I was first diagnosed, there was a story on the news about exercise reducing cancer risk etc....I actually threw my shoe at the TV while uttering very bad words! I also remember being at a stop light after a chemo session, in the car next to me was an extremely large woman with Big Mac in one hand, a cigarette in the other (and no doubt a beer between her knees).That set me off on another round of bad words, but I did resist the urge to ram her car!

    So nothing 'eliminates' the risks of any problem. But even with that caviot, statistically exercise is the best non-medical thing we can do to reduce the risk of recurrence, plus reduces the risk of all sorts of other health problems too. And for sure it makes you feel better, look better, gives you more energy, slows down aging, lets you met great people (aka us ), and is FUN!

    Claire, gorgeous pictures!

    Yesterday I did the treadmill & some abs before having people over for New Years Day.....which was fun, plus I used up all the rest of the bad-for-you food I had bought for the holidays. So the eating can get back to normal at last. I am going to do some toning this morning & then tackle taking down the decorations.

    ruthbru, I am still feeling sick from the Tamoxifen, but I am keeping my eye on the ball. I will get back on my horse. This is a bad time, but it is temporary. All of you are keeping exercise and physical activity front and center for me. Just being reminded of what I am missing is very important.

    Didn't do anything closely related to exercise yesterday. Sister took me out for breakfast then went to movies to see Star Wars. Felt out of sorts last night so jumped on treadmill for 30 mins - just had to move. Exercise is addictive!

    Will ride our bikes today and if it warms up even a little will go over to run in the pool for an hour. My sister is not into too much exercise, I guess because she's not had any chronic illness where I have BC and Type 2 Diabetes to keep at bay.

    DecisionFreak, I have the fitbit one but suggest you only get something simple if you are not going in for all the technology bells and whistles. I was trying to keep up with the app but really only want to see my steps and haven't used it in the last couple months for the food, glucose, activity, etc. details.

    I use S-Health, free with my smartphone. Doesn't measure everything, and I don't have it programmed for anything other than walking, but it does keep me on track.

    That said, I am feeling much fitter from all the skiing. Trimmer too in the waistline. Off for a run prior to a day in Seattle. Frosty, but glorious morning here and I want to see the Olympic Mountains which will be from Pike Place Market. Have a couple of gift cards to redeem and want some goodies from the market...special meats and veggies and really good eggs. One of the "special meats" is a ham hock from Bavarian Meats for the pea soup I intend to make. I have everything else, including a parsnip which is the magic ingredient (on top of the carrots, onions, celery, and of course split peas).

    Hoping to get back up skiing tomorrow...prior to being slammed with work once again. - Claire

    I also found a way to keep my fitbit safe so it counts my steps during water aerobics. DF, there are also smartphone apps that will track your steps as well but I don't always carry my phone whereas the fitbit stays clipped to me all day.

    Claire, I have been enjoying your photographs. I love winter and winter landscapes. Very lovely scenes.

    Claire and Patoo, I knew I could count on this group for great information. Love the idea of free cellphone apps! I am probably going to buy a new smartphone and would prefer to spend the money on the phone as opposed to gadgets. I like simple. I don't have to keep track of anything except steps. Sometime down the line, I would like to track my pulse rate.

    Everybody, I got dressed today! I have been in pjs or a nightgown for quite a few days. I kept my body trim by hauling trash to the dumpster and vigorous yard work. I may grab a couple of bags of trash and head to the dumpster. I have lots of work to do to clean up the yard. One day at a time. One day at a time.

    DF I have been using argus, which is a free phone app. It will track your steps, you can track your walking/running various other fitness activites, mileage, heart rate, weight. It estimates your calories burned. You can also take pictures of your food/meals. I'm not using it for that anymore but its there if you want to remember what you ate and how your weight corresponded. As noted, you have to carry it around all day if you want to track all your steps and that's not as convenient as having it on your wrist or clipped on your clothes. But its free! I carried mine around daily at first to see how many steps I get in. And the truth is, with sedentary work I do not get enough steps unless I make time for walks. So now I only use it to record my specific fitness activities. I'll try to post a couple of screens later so you can see. Right now I'm on my ipad.

    Makes sense to spend your money where it will multi-task. I guess if you wear something with a pocket large enough to hold your phone or a fanny pack that should work to be on your person constantly. Argus sounds like a good app. May put it on my phone also, just because!

    For the first time in many days, I managed to get dressed. I went outside and did about 10 minutes of yard work. Then, I walked the loop twice for a total of one mile.

    Happy belated birthday, Patoo!

    Got in an hour of walking at the Y. I got passed by this guy who must have been about 70. Drives me crazy when I'm working like mad, my little legs flying like a dachshund's, and somebody just strolls by me.

    Claire, the skiing looks beautiful, but cold. Brrr!

    Claire those pictures are magnificent. The first looks like some of the photography backdrops I've been considering for the February Ball I am photographing. Two balls actually, one at our church and the other is the annual ball at the kid's school.

    I'm so glad I got back into the gym last year after BMx. I have always walked, hiked and even run. Swimming as well, which is next on my list for this winter and getting ROM back. Patoo you are sooo right. Exercise is addictive!

    Ruth, I to have questioned at times why I who does not drink, smoke, eat fast food or eat meat still got BC. There is no answer and I am so blessed that they caught it early.
