I had a lumpectomy Oct. 29, It is now Dec 16, My breast is not healing on the inside. I am currently going to the wound clinic, they want to open up the wound and clean it out but my surgeon wants them to keep on with the drain and let it heal. I have rheumatoid arthritis and take Plaquenil They think this is stopping the healing so I have put the medication on hold for now. Has anyone had this problem that might have advice?

Hi Lou49509, just a thought, have you markedlyincreased your vVitamin C intake? It is a well known fact that srgery decreasesVitamin C levels. It is also known that Vitamin C is greatlyresponsible for wound healing/collagen formation/tissue integrity. The RDA of Vitamin C is a pitifully low 60mg/day. That is only slightly above the level to avoid Scurvy. Kind of ridiculous really. If......, if you have no kidney issues or bowel obstruction issues, then it is completely safe and highly recommended to increase your Vitamin C intake to several grams per day depending on your bowel tolerance. The way to determine bowel tolerance is to take Vitamin C by mouth till you get diarrhea, you are then at your level of bowel tolerance. Simply decrease your intake by 1 gram , and maintain your Vitamin C intake that high as you heal. As you improve, you will need less and less Vitamin C.

A good multivitamin and even making sure, which I am sure you already do, to have a good quality of protein. I got Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy at a local wound care center at a local hospital to help heal from surgery. They said they see a lot of cancer patients who have trouble healing. Did you have rads too? Could you have an infection? Are you on antibiotics? I hope you can get better soon and suceed with your reconstruction. It is super important for me, so I sympathize.
