Nipple reconstruction, Yes or No?

I am in the process of making decisions about what kind of reconstruction that I'm going to have. I'm sure that I'm probably over thinking it, but the prospect of it being so permanent is making me neurotic. I will be having a double mastectomy and using implants for reconstruction. I just can't decide if I want to have nipples or not. I'm married with four kids. They would only be for cosmetic purposes and I don't know if it really matters at this point. My husband has been very clear that he does not care, and will be happy with whatever I do. So that doesn't help. Has anyone gotten them and regretted it? Or vice versa? The "after" pics shown to me by my plastic surgeon are "okay." Some of my friends have suggested forgoing nipples and getting a decorative tattoo. A part of me thinks that they are just pointless. Another part of me is concerned that I'm going to feel so butchered, that it may help for me to look as normal as possible. Any thoughts/experiences would be greatly appreciated.

I did not have nipple sparing but did get 3-D nipple tattoos from Vinnie Meyer in Baltimore. They look great and I forget they're not real plus I never have to wear a bra!

I had nipple reconstruction three weeks ago, and even though they're extra-big right now to account for shrinking I'm SO happy I got them! There's just something so much more natural-looking about my foobs now, I'm thrilled. I have an appointment set up in June with Vinnie to get tattoos, too.

Thank you for your input! I've read about Vinnie and looked at his work. I assume that insurance didn't cover any of what he did? I don't live close to him and if I decided to do that I would have to come up with travel expenses as well. My sister in law had a prophylactic mastectomy and she said that because of the lack of feeling and the implants she didn't feel like she really had boobs, even though she could keep her nipples. It doesn't bother her, but I'm really struggling with even thinking about it.

I was fairly ambivalent about getting nipples, but decided to do it since my insurance would cover it. I am so glad I did. I almost forget that my breasts are not original. The surgery was minor and recovery was quick. A year later I had the micropigmentation specialist who works with my PS complete the process by tattooing areolas. She was terrific! The tattoos are so natural looking! She matched my skin tone and added some depth. And it cost almost half as much as Vinnie and was a 30 minute drive from my home. My results couldn't be better. There are a number of tattoo artists who very talented, so no need to travel too far. I believe there was a post listing recommended tattoo artist who are able to do this sort of thing. I can't seem to find it though.

I had nipple recon & then tattooing. Glad I did it, I didn't want to look at "Barbie" boobs every time I looked in the mirror. Did it for myself, DH doesn't care one way or the other. They look huge when they are first done, but shrink to just small bumps & they look completely normal under shirts etc. Tough decision, but you don't have to decide right away, I had mine done a year or so after recon. I'm scheduled for nipples Jan. 18. I called to make an appointment with Vinnie, but they won't schedule till after the procedure is finished. The total cost is $800. They want 1/2 down at the time you make an appointment. The procedure takes about an hour. That sounds a little steep to me, $800 an hour???? What do others think? A regular tattoo artist gets about $75-$100 an hour in my area.

So now I'm considering a decorative tattoo instead. If I'm going to be spending hundreds of dollars, I think I'd like something prettier than a nipple, lol. I've seen one artist. He is drawing up a design for a peacock on the side I had my port. The head would cover my port scar and the tail would curve down around my nipple. On the other side, a single feather would look like it is falling over the nipple area.

Anyone get a tat of something other than a nipple?

I'm going for 3D's only, next month. I liked the idea of not having a nipple showing if I was not wearing a bra and being that my daughters boyfriend is here all the time, it's nice to wear pajamas without a bra.

Debian - I see you are in PA. I had my areola tattoos done by a woman tattoo artist who is trained in cosmetic tattooing. She works in NYC, Philly, and I believe somewhere in the burbs. I am really happy with the results and she charged half as much as Vinnie. Her name is Mandy Sauler. If you google her name you can find her info. I know there are other artists out there who come highly recommended.

I had nipple recon done, but I had a uni BMX and I wanted to look as symmetric as possible. I then had tattooing done. The recon nip looks pretty darn close to the real thing. In addition to the nip tattooing I had some "extra" work done to help cover up some of the scars and give me something pretty to see in the mirror now. This was all covered by my insurance as part of the post surgery repigmentation (after my deductible).
