So went in for my regular mammogram/ultrasound combo on Dec. 3rd, and 2 suspicious spots showed up. They've scheduled me for a US guided biopsy on Dec. 22nd, but I can't find anywhere that will tell me whether it's FNA or core biopsy. The instructions they've given me don't indicate one way or the other either. The results do not give me the BiRAD score other than "Suspicious (4)". I like details, people!

So thankful I found this message board. You all are keeping it real and keeping me sane.

I can empathize - all three of my cancers were dx'd around Xmas time. I believe (but am not sure) that US guided biopsies are always FNA (?). I'm sure someone else on the board knows more.

Hang in there - in the long run it will be better to know and deal with whatever it is than to not know!

HopingThisisNotStrikeTwo...I will be thinking of you Tuesday....I have a biopsy that morning too! Ugh, I usually don't touch alcohol but no way am I getting through this holiday if the Attivan doesn't work, I'm getting drunk. I hear results can be done in 2 - 3 business days...are you going for it? Someone suggested I ask to call in to get them - then I can decide if I want to or not. I am dreading the biopsy. Not great experience with them last time though they thought my nodes were involved and they weren't. They thought my right breast had cancer and it didn't. They thought the left side had it and it did. 1 for 3 - would seems odds are in my favor but I am freaked out...this board and my nurse practitioner are the only things keeping me somewhat sane as well....God bless us both! Positive thoughts your way....

Whether your biopsy will be FNA or Core needle will be determined by what the doc sees on the ultrasound screen. I think FNA is usually used when they think they are looking at a cyst, the core needle when the lesion appears solid. As you have two separate areas of concern, you might well wind up with both procedures. Personally, I'd be hoping for the core needle as, with more sample, there is more for the pathologist to look at.

As for BIRADS 4, suspicious, yes, that is all they have to say at this point. You may see this elsewhere, but 80% of BIRADS 4 lesions turn out to be benign.

I'll say a prayer for us both, 70f9! Seems a lot of biopsies are scheduled for this week. Merry F'ing Christmas. Ugh. I'm not worried about the procedure itself - worried about the aftermath. It's all I can focus on right now. I feel like I'm obsessed, but panicking at the same time. Trying to learn all I can, but what I read only makes me either more confused or convinced one way or the other. The not knowing is the worst.

Thanks, Brookside! This kind of came out of left field as I am also dealing with thyroid issues. I wasn't even concerned when I went in for my mammogram because I was so focused on getting my thyroid checked out. I'll let you guys know how it goes!

StrikeTwo....hope you got er done. I did my biopsy this morning (took me two Attivan and a Promethezine to be sure I didn't freak out). Never thought I'd be so relieved to hear that the damn cancer is probably back. wthf!?!?! This doctor really took her time, her and the nurses talked about Christmas, my son, we joked (I informed them my last diagnosis the first time around the ultrasound biopsy was horrible). The doctor was very reserved but at the end as they were wrapping it up she sat me up and said while the well defined mass that appears contained (about a centimeter) was half way up in my arm pit muscle (why the biopsy hurt like a mo-fo) was not palpable which is why neither of the doctors caught it in the last 2 checkups (3 doctors if you count the fellow who was training with my world known specialized guy)....ta da.....I just saved my own life.....again. She biopsied what appeared to be prominent lymph nodes but she said they didn't appear to be involved but we have to know for sure. In her own words she said "This could be a very easy fix". Not the results I was looking for....but I'll take it.

As for the rest of you worriers....get your head in the game and listen to your gut. You insist on a scan or biopsy if YOU, not the doctor, HAS ANY DOUBT!!!!!!
