I'm only taking ibuprofin now, I stopped taking the heavy stuff in the hospital two days before I left.
-
hang in there Kate. I feel for you. I know what you mean about holding it together and then the dam breaks open, I hope you feel better sometimes a good cry helps! Hope they took your drains out. My day is Wednesday - yikes
-
Yes, all drains out, so much better now!
-
sorry for the delay mild skin aggravation from nerves acting up kept me out of it for a bit
Congrats and healing vibes and welcome to the other side!
Bair Hugger is a warming tube that encompassed my entire core to ensure increased and continuos blood flow to the newly formed/applied flaps - evil device
Good luck to you all pre and post surgery
-
Sorry I haven't been writing. Stage II went fine. I'm in a compression garment and have had one shower but don't really know what I look like yet. So nauseated still. Happens to me with anesthesia. Love to all.
-
So good to hear from everyone. :-).
I'm day 5 post op. Prayerfully heading home today after my shower. This was def. hard to do but I am so thankful I knew what to expect so that when the pain came on or I started to walk that I wasn't surprised by any of it. I got real sick to my stomach and man did that hurt but the nurses quickly got that under control. The one thing I wanted to share was how heavy my chest would feel, not because of the size of the breasts I think if I am lucky they made me to a B but the actual feeling of a weight being on my chest. I had that when I had my bmx with expanders just didn't know I could get that with the diep flap as well.
Happy healing ladies.
Much love & prayers

SA8 - so good to hear from you. Glad you are ok and on the way home. Keep us posted.
DaBoys - you too glad it sounds like the worst is over for you. What was skin nerve pain like? And the bear hug thing sounds like it was awful for you.
Kate - congrats on being drain free !! Same to you hope the worst is over.
Trineg - hope your nausea has passed.
Sending prayers and good healing thoughts to all of you recovering.
I'm next in line I think - scheduled for this coming Wednesday. Getting organized and trying to stay busy.

Hi everyone! I am finally a flapper and loving it.
My surgery was about 9 hours long, which was expected. I asked my surgeon why so long when I had already had my BMX and he said they still have do work there: remove the old scars, remove the remaining tissue expander, clean up scar tissue under the pectoral muscles on both sides, and remove any remaining debris from the previous surgeries.
I spent about 1.5 hours in the recovery room (they normally keep DIEPS for 2), so I must have been doing well. I was transferred to a room on their Oncology Transplant unit, so they have been great. It was nice to be in my own room right off the bat.
I took a quick peek under the covers and loved what I saw! Two beautiful, soft breast mounds that are about the size of my originals (a B?). I had cried for joy when I had gotten a fill on the one way back when that gave me hint of what was to come. I hope that those you you who are still only halfway there can see it a a firstfruits of more to come. .
The next bit of good news was that I didn't have to go to the iCU. At IU Methodist they now transfer DIEPs to the Oncology Transplant unit. The nurse are great. They see 2 DIEPs/week on average, so they know their stuff. They had to check my flaps hourly for 48 hours (my doctor is very conservative) and be NPO (nothing by mouth but ice chips) the first 24 hours. That was partly to keep nausea at bay and keep me real for emergency surgery should anything happen to the flap. I had bought some Biotin mouth moisturizing spray which worked great to keep my mouth moist.
The next day was clear liquids, but i could advance as tolerated.I just kept eating light foods for 24 hours. I had brought some Pedialyte packets to mix with the water, which kept my tummy happy. I also had the anti nausea patch from before surgery and Zofran in case I needed it, so I was in good hands.
Time passed extraordinarily slow. Somehow I lost a day during that time because when i thought Friday morning had dawned, it was really Saturday. Wilbur strikes again. I also tend to wake up from my naps talking to the people that were in my dreams, and Here is the story behind the Wilbur allusion:
On the 2014DIEP thread. One woman posted this the evening after her surgery: "I am officially a flapper! Everyone says my doc did a fantastic have been junta fit the block. I can't dibs both Wilbur grgvsimecgugrt" Wilbur is now the embodiment of anesthesia with a sense of humor--you can blame every odd thing on him!
I am too drowsy to type more right now.More later.

Hi everyone,
Congratulations to those of you who have just had and surgery and a speedy recovery to you all!
I have a bilateral DIEP flap scheduled for February 18, 2016 and am now trying to learn about what to expect. I just read about some memory issues that are possible in these comments. Is this related to surgery? I am still having cognitive issues from chemo so I'm concerned about more memory issues!
-
Bigsister: I am glad you are doing well!
-
big sister - woot woot !!
-
Jl- memory issues have not happened to me personally. Since my diagnosis I've been through 6 surgeries with the stage one DIEP being my last one and my stage two in exactly 2 weeks. I think a lot of stress adds to "forgetting" things but not permanent. I don't want to discredit anyone's issues but just me personally I didn't have those issues.
BIGSISTER- isn't it just an amazing feeling to finally feel normal again. I felt the same way when I woke up and "peeked". I'm so glad you've had a positive outcome thus far.
Trineg- thinking of you. Can't wait to hear about everything. Hope your feeling better.
Not again- if I don't get on here again before your sx, I wish you the best. It will be an amazing journey!
-
jlstacey, don't worry about the memory issue. If it happens, it won't be for long. So many things affect our memory. The primary one is stress. No matter how much you tell your self that everything is going to be OK, emotions have a mind of their own and can tie up so much RAM that recent events have no place to lodge.
Memories about the time in the hospital is often lost for the same reason coupled with narcotics and the effects of anesthesia. And lets face it--there is nothing worth remembering about the hospital stay! Family members who stayed wth you can remind you about anything important, and they should give you everything in writing when you leave.
When you get home, keep a notebook handy to record when you take your pain pills so you can remember when that as so you know when you can take the next one. Once you are off the narcotics, it will all come back.
Today is my first full day home. I slept like a baby last night. My wedge combined with a bunch of pillows did the trick. Today I am proper up on the couch with bunches of pillows and enjoying Netflix episodes. Pain is easily controlled and I am getting around well with my walker. My 4 drains are not too bad. I have them clipped to two lanyards--a great way to live with them.
All-in-all I am finding that the anticipation of this surgery was MJCH worse than the actual thing. For those of you thinking about doing this, you won't be sorry!

I am 18 weeks out and sometimes I forget I had the surgery at all. It keeps getting better every day.
My memory is a little foggy - I think it was the narcotics. I guess I look at that as a blessing - onward and upward!
I am still too chicken to go in for phase two soooo I must remember some of it,.... hoping for inspiration in 2016!!
So glad to hear about others doing well, it's hard at first but I think this surgery is really worth it..
-
So glad to hear everyone is doing well. Continued healing prayers & love as we get through every new day. 😊
Daboys how are your drains?
Bigsister how are you doing?
Trineg sending lots of hugs, love & prayers your way.
Jlstacey congratulations on your upcoming surgery in February. Yay!!!!
**Has anyone felt like a burning sensation under their belly incision. It almost reminds me of like a rug burn?
Tmgilbert has your belly swelling gone down yet? Stage 2 is almost here for you. Happy times.

Quick drain question:
All 4 of the drains continue to produce very little fluid. The last 2 days 2 have been at 10 & 2 at 15 for total out put for the day. I'm up walking more so I thought they would produce more like when I had my bmx with expanders. Anyone have thoughts on this?
Thank you.

SA8PG
When did you have surgery? For me I was told if my output went lower than 25 or 30 (I can't exactly remember) for a 48 hour period the drains could safely be removed. Have you called to see if you can pull them now.
I ended up with a total of 6 surgeries between my first attempt at implants (which involved 4 surgeries due to multiple infections) and then I had phase one and phase 2 of DIEP last year. My drain output really varied from operation to operation. Several times I had some drains in for many weeks, over three or four and sometimes the output slowed down really quickly and I was able to pull the drain very early.
So I don't see a low output as something to be concerned about and if it were me I would likely get them out as there is a slightly higher risk of infection while they are in.
But, of course call your doctor. By the time I had my DIEP surgery, which was done out of town I had my husband pull my remaining 3 drains that I flew home with out when each one was putting out the amount of fluid they felt safe to do. It was actually easier for me to have him do it. But, I don't think I would have felt that way after my first one or two surgeries.
Thinking of you and hope this just means your body is healing quickly.
Take care,
Julieho
-
Thanks Julie. I'm sure I am being overly cautious after this last year of infection nightmare. I am getting into the Dr's on Friday so she can look. If the output is like a 5 tomorrow maybe she will see me tomorrow instead. I am 1 week past surgery today.
I am also watching a tiny pink spot that is the center of both of my flaps. I wonder if it's where the doppler's where placed?
-
SA8PG, are you stripping your drains? Although it could be perfectly normal for their output to be low (sow of mine are), it could also be from a little clog.
-
Yes I am stripping them. This is my 4th set of drains from breast cancer surgeries although never had them on my hips before. I'll try and walk more tomorrow to see if the input increases. :-)
Thanks ladies.
-
SA8- thanks for asking, my swelling is not noticeable at all. I don't feel like I have a super flat stomach but let's face it, I wasn't in it for the flat belly. I really think that the compression band was the key. I don't remember the doctors or nurses saying that I needed to wear it when I went home so I waited until I got to remove the drains and then i told the nurses/PA's who called weekly that I felt like I was bloated all the time. After I wore the compression band for 2 weeks I didn't feel like that anymore. I didn't get to remove my last drain until approx 4 weeks out and my output was approx between 20-25/day.
-
Well, I am now 8 days out and doing well. I love my new, warm girls that jiggle when I move just like my old ones did. Although the skin is still numb, I can certainly feel them when I cup them. That works for me!
My tummy is another story. It really feels tight and sore. I thought maybe it is because I have been straightening up too much. So today I am going back to using the walker so I have to walk hunched over, and I pulled out the taller wedge to use at night.
It could just be swelly belly that doesn't look swelly because I am so tall--my pregnancies took forever to show and I could usually get away with just wearing loose clothing instead of maternity clothes at the end. It is all tolerable, but I hope my belly is healing ok. I spend most of each day propped on the couch working through the Gilmore Girls series
-
BigSister. So so happy to hear you are doing good. Yay!!!! Keep us posted.
Well, I got all 4 drains out today that's the praise. The right hip drain site however is really red, swollen & hot. They cultured it and are putting me on Clindamycin for 10 days to help with these chills & low grade fevers I've been fighting. Praying it's not one of the mean bugs and this will do it. I've been on antibiotics way to long. Culture should be back by Tuesday.
Thank you for your support ladies. Healing hugs to all.
Xoxo

Bigsister- everything you're saying sounds normal, normal, normal!!! Time will straighten you up. Keep moving. I never thought I'd walk upright again
sa8-thinking of you and hoping the clindymicin does the trick. Keep us posted.
-
SA8PG, I wish you well with the drain issue....and Praise God you got the drains out! lol! I was so happy to be free of those things! Praying for you to recover quickly! I know hospital stays are scary with the nasty bugs that can be there, but most likely it's just some regular ole' fashioned type.
Bigsister, it took me over 3 weeks to stand up straight. i am now 2 months out and doing just fine.... I was already pretty slim, so I was especially tight...so much so my skin started to turn red and dry from all that stretch. I put some vaseline or lotion on it to help give it some flex! Now I am back to my regular activities with no difference in range of motion in midsection or arms. It seems all that recovery was forever ago and feeling great. Enjoy your show and relax and try not to push it too much.
As far as swelly belly, I have to say I certainly had that, but I'd say that is mostly if not all gone now. I have great range of motion in my arms and I can now see/feel my hip bones while laying flat once again! I've lost a bit of weight (working Retail during the holidays!) ...and need to gain some back quick for my fat grafting/Stage 2 on Wednesday!!! Yikes.
Be well girls and Merry Christmas!
-
Did anyone check with their insurance company about getting a temporary hospital bed for recovery?any luck?
-
Hi all,
Just wanted you to know surgery is behind mej. They did have to go back in twice on one of my breasts. Then it has taken 2+ days to get my pain / headaches under control... So hoping today will begood day 🙂
I've been too drugged up here to read or writ much here..hope to write more soon.
-
Welcome to the other side, NotAgain! So sorry it took so long to get there. My sister had a terrible time with her migraines after having her ovaries out. I hope that now you can just rest, rest, rest.
SA8, glad you got your drains out and hope that the antibiotics does its job. I am grateful that mine all seem fine. Having had infections and sepsis, infection is scary!
I have my first post op visit on Tuesday, and I hope the drains will all go then, but one of the hip drains is a little juicy yet--just over 30 cc/24 hours so I might be stuck with that one awhile.
I am 10 days out and am trying to keep taking it easy. I feel great except for my belly, which feels heavy and hard when I am walking around. It feels better whenI am just propped up on the couch. Guess I had better listen to my body!
-
NotAgain how are you doing???? Been thinking about you. Healing prayers.
BigSister keep us posted on your Tuesday appointment. Hoping your drains come out.
Lessharp thank you for checking in on us. I'm so glad to hear that even though you are standing a lot in Retail you are doing great.
Mel I haven't checked about a bed I wonder if insurance will cover that? Sounds like a nice idea.
Well my right side is pretty achy but the temps seem to be under control. Continung to pray and believe all will be well.
Much love
