edited December 2015 in Waiting for Test Results

Hello, loves!

In early November I went to the doctor for a UTI and at my husband's insistence mentioned "the lump".

"The lump" moved in a couple of years ago. Back then it was pea sized and I had to wonder if it was a lump or fat. The was a time when we didn't have health insurance and I was too young to qualify for a mammogram through our state's programs. And so it began, my life with "the lump". I didn't bother it, it didn't bother me.

But then...

It grew.

Fast forward to November of this year. No longer poor. No longer without insurance. And "The lump" was no longer pea sized. It had grown to the size of a grape. There was no confusing it with fat any longer either. And as far as the hubby was concerned, the time of ignoring it and hoping it would go away had passed. So my pcp did a breast exam and sent me over to the hospital for an ultrasound. There it was on the screen, a 1.9cm solid mass. Something in my stomach ached when I saw it.

That afternoon my pcp called me with the radiologist's report: (And I quote) Its probably a fibroadenoma. Have her checked again in three months.

My pcp said: I'm sorry but I disagree. We are scheduling you for an MRI.

One month of waiting, worrying,Googling, and comparing my US to every photo on the internet. This past Wednesday I had my breast MRI. When it was over I was told they had already ordered a diagnostic mammogram for me. I went straight in for that.

While the nurse was adjusting my girls I asked when I might get the results. She said "Oh in just a minute. The doctor has already called and wanted you done immediately. He's gonna come talk to you."

Here's where panic sets in. Apparently it isn't normal to actually see this doctor. You normally just get a letter or e-mail with your mammo result.

hThe doctor came in and the first thing I notice is he won'tlook me in the eye. He said "the lump" didn't meet all of the criteria to be a benign tumor. He was 90-95% sure it was a fibroadenoma but because of concerns with the scans I had to have an ultrasound guided biopsy.

He walked out of the room and I fell apart.

So here I am. Tomorrow morning "the lump" and I go to see what it's made of. I'm scared to death. I'm only 35. I have three brilliant children. I'm a full time parent bc my husband works extended time away from home.

My questions are MANY. BUT mostly I just want to know what to expect.

Actually, it is normal procedure to see the doctor adtr a diagnostic mammogram. They have told you that they are all but certain it is a benign tumor. Ultrasound guided biopsies are really easy. Pretty painless and you should get results pretty soon. At this time there is nothing terribly concerning to be afraid of. Try not to worry too much, brcause they are all but certain this is benign.

I have learned that different hospitals, clinics, and doctors do things differently. What may be considered "normal procedure" at one place is not at another. It's crazy! I say that to say, PLEASE don't panic because you think it's not normal to see the doctor after the MRI and/or mammogram.

Second, trust what the doctor told you. He's not going to lie to you or tell you what he think you want to hear. He's going to give you his honest, professional opinion. If he is 90-95% sure that it's a fibroadenoma, than until you know for sure it's not.....relax. (Yes, I know it's a whole lot easier said than done!) I'm not saying that your doctor is right or wrong....all I'm saying is to listen to what he said to you and try not to read anymore into it, like him not looking you in the eye.

The biopsy itself is not bad at all. I was VERY nervous for mine and had heard some pretty terrible stories, but in all honesty, it was not anything horrible. I had a core needle biopsy, so I can only speak on that type, but if you have the same, they will give you a shot to numb your breast and after that, you won't feel a thing. (The doctor told me that I would feel a slight pinch and burning during the numbing shot, but I never did.) It doesn't take but a few minutes. Actually setting up for the biopsy took longer than the biopsy itself. I had worked myself up into a pretty stressful panic the morning of, so I was VERY relieved when it turned out to be so painless and quick.

Please try to relax. 90-95% sure that it's benign is excellent! I'll take those odds any day!

You'll undress from the waist up and put on the half gown. You lay on a table on your back, they'll open the side that they will biopsy. They will do another ultrasound and mark where they will insert the needle. They will drape blue cloths around your breast to keep the area sterile and will sterilize your breast. They will inject numbing stuff which burns a bit, but numbs you up. They will again ultrasound and collect the samples. There's a click as the needle pops out to collect the sample. I had 2 tumors and they collected 5 samples from each. Then they bandage the sites the needle was inserted. I had another mammogram (gentle squeezing) to check the markers that were inserted and then I was done. Iced at home and took Tylenol. Surprisingly, the next afternoon I got the preliminary "it's cancer" phone call. I got more details about a week later.

    1. I had to call my doctors office to find out if my results were in. They were abd they're BENIGN.
    2. Follow up in 6 months and possibly a lumpectomy down the road if it continues to grow.
