I will attend all her future appointments but until yhen, I have questions. She had a mammogram done 6 months ago, all clear. But she felt a lump this week and saw her dr who agreed to another mammogram. Which sent her to other testings. She was there all day for several test. They did some syringe type test to see what was inside. Sorry for the lack of technical verbage. This is how mom told me. Test came back the next day, cancer in both breast. She's to expect a call Monday for a surgery date. That's all she knows. But really, what else should we know, or expecr, or ask!? Thanks in advance!

Hi there. You sound like a very supportive daughter. Your mom is lucky to have you. It sounds like she had some biopsies. Do you know how the cancer was diagnosed in the other breast? What type of surgery is she having? Assuming she did have biopsies what kind of breast cancer does she have? What are the hormone receptors? Is she HER-2 positive? Breast cancer is very complicated. I urge you and/or your mom to get all the facts before she has surgery. Has she had genetic testing? Has she gotten a second opinion ? Just want to make sure she is making an informed decision before having any surgery. You can't go back. Don't rush into anything. There is time to get more information. You get private message me if you want to talk more detailed. Good luck and keep us posted.....

    Hi Leanna:

Your mother should request copies of the radiologist's reports from all imaging (mammogram) to date for her records. (Not just some form letter, but the underlying report.)

She should also request a copy of the pathology report, which was prepared by the pathologist who examined the tissue removed by any biopsies.

The pathology report will include the information regarding the kinds of cancer cells seen, such as for example, invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC), the most common kind or something else. The pathology report should also include the results of various tests for estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR), and in the case of invasive breast cancer, results of HER2 testing. "HER2" is also sometimes called HER2/neu, c-erbB-2, and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (EGFR2).

Here is a section from this site about pathology reports. At the bottom of the page, there is a good .pdf pamphlet, which you can download and print. It is very comprehensive, so not all of the tests will have been done on the biopsy samples.

The results of the imaging and pathology from the biopsies will influence her surgical options, and the recommendations she receives.
